there are many cruel jaded just plain mean people here on eplaya, don't kid yourself. there is also biting witty humor and a few intelligent conversations.
"intelligent conversations" << we try and keep the intelligence to a minimum.

Brad- your guesses assume that the interest in the event hasn't grown at all in the last few years, which would be a huge (and incorrect) assumption. The event has crossed the tipping point; the interest in it is no longer a smooth growth line from where it was in the past. It has become a destination event, the current situation in part reflects that.

The fact that tickets needed be purchased now if you wanted to be assured of getting one is also a huge change (and turned out to be wrong, as there no longer is any assurance of getting one)

The part that people seem to be having the hardest time accepting is that we're in uncharted territory regardless of past events; no amount of comparing where we're at today to years before the event sold out will change that.

Thanks for the link. A good listen and I really don't care if you violated protocol or etiquette or whatever. If people are frying that fish right now then surely it is a result of over saturation of the tixapocalypse subject.

Sorry FeetOfclay.
What's inappropriate is the ugliness exhibited in a couple of the posts after yours.
Unfortunately, there are some here with inordinately high post counts who prefer radical exclusion to inclusion.

I agree that's possible. In fact, I have always wondered at what has kept BM's growth rate as low as it is. I am not sure what in particular would tip it this year, it's definitely been in the public consciousness quite strongly before. I don't think a mildly popular youtube video is the reason --- and yes, 1.1M views is not at all uncommon on Youtube.

So I am perfectly ready to believe that growth in demand this year was greater than the rate of the last 5 years, though I have not seen anything to suggest it is vastly more, like 25% to 30%. It is possible a lot of people said "hey, let's try the lottery and see, I have always wanted to go."

Truth is, we don't have enough info to know. The past evidence would suggest a reasonable ticket demand from 60K to 65K, other factors might have boosted it to 70K. Numbers that are "much higher" would require some evidence to justify them which we haven't seen for now.

However, with theme camps reporting 25 to 30% success in the lottery, and a report of it being "double what was expected" I am guessing anywhere from 120K to 150K lottery applications. I don't see it as likely that more than a small part of this can be attributed to new demand from virgin burners. It has to have come from oversubscription to the lottery and speculators, in ratio unknown. But I would like more facts -- we are all just speculating, mostly.

@feetofclay-I like your topic title. It grabbed my attention while looking for info from the bmorg on...anything.
And thanks to a link from an eplayan, I found Eric's topic which is a great thread. I wish Eric's thread hat a title like this.
Btw thanks to both of you for the link to Marian's interview.
Good interview that talks about a lot of the things that have been discussed on this forum. But that's for Eric's thread.
But anyway, the point is, the shouting.
Is that the way you are going to treat every newbie who is genuinely trying to help and participate but innocently breaks one of the old rules?
Well than, yeah it is going to be a shitty year.
And you are going to be really stressed.

@ lemur how does it feel to be called a codger? I nearly decked the first guy who called me that. And that was a long time ago.

Btw I AM a fuccking hippy, and all this talk about shirtcocking makes want to see what the fuck it's about.

FeetOfClay, welcome to e-playa! Like Gaminwench mentioned, everybody is at their wits end and snapping at anything that moves. Once the ticket trouble settles down we will go back to the normal snarking and hazing of new faces, and you will feel warm and fuzzy among us. :D

a codger!! i guess it doesnt particularly fit....and well, even if it did.. it is probably better to be not so concerned about the impressions people have of folks that are posting stuff on the internets.

id much prefer curmudgeon....if anything, just to appeal to the sensibilities of some folks..

I won't refer to specific numbers. there are plenty of numbers floating around, some make sense and some were reinforced by Marion. Some are gibberish.
I vote with those who think that there is BIG increase in interest this year. Unimaginably big. Fuck the numbers I just believe it. The use of the word "significant" by Will Chase was...significant, and Marion couldn't spin the numbers down even if she wanted to.
Scalpers too, MG as much as admitted that the org doesnt have a handle on their number.
I'm just saying' I think the most surprising numbers are going to be the virgins.
I really don't think it's going to be a bad year. I mean " the worst day fishing beats the best day working"
I wish everybody there the best burn ever.

By the way, I AM a fucking hippy.

I found out about this interview when Barton posted about it on our local fb site. I didn't want to make a new post about it because I'm not in the eplaya clique, and new posts by those on the outside face extra scrutiny and snark. I posted it at the end of the PR thread instead.

Oh crap Zeke Chaparrel, if you aren't in the clique, then I'm not in the clique. And if I'm not in the clique then THE WORLD IS GOING TO END lol

Sometimes it feels like there are two people that share Lemur's account, no?

I appreciate the link, i've been meaning to give it a listen and your thread title reminded me and then you provided the helpful link. Thank you.

Tempers are short these days. Don't confuse the Eplaya with the playa. Total asshats become pretty wonderful people once you throw a little dust at them.

And tamarakay is correct about the thread title to this thread. Eplaya is not just a social opportunity. It is a primary source of Burning Man related information for many, many people. I look at the titles first. About the threads and titles: You'll look up and down eplaya threads. Look 'em over with care. About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there." With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
