This is a guide that I wrote after reading the "40% virgins" stat last night.

Good job, Gibson! It certainly takes serious dedication and effort to thrive in Black Rock City. And if the dry winter continues, BRC will be very dusty this year.
Now we'll try to keep this thread near the top.

I think you did good, except for the food. I think long shelf life and proper cooler techniques are more important to emphasize than a stove. And maybe I glossed over it, but there wasn't much mention of the dust aside from causing white-out conditions, like how it's also in your mouth and other orifices all the time. Otherwise, awesome, all around great read, I hope it gets passed around.

Gibson- this is a fabulous idea! I'm going to give it a nudge over to "Q & A Tips & Tricks" because it covers more than just the shelter and camping aspect, and hopefully it will get noticed a bit more.

Hey Herring,
I'm going to do a part 2 next week that will get a little more in depth about stuff like food, coolers (block ice ftw!), "are there drugs at burning man?", "what do I do", "where do I camp" etc. etc.
Glad you guys like this

Great read. This was my favorite part.
You were a little harsh on the state of the potties (they're cleaned at least daily, not weekly) and last year's were very good (I cannot speak to you of the things I've seen a decade ago
) but you know . . . that's not even a criticism. 'Cause I once met a dreadful sparkle-pony who'd peed between strangers' cars for 4+ days because she was scared of portapotties, and really . . . I don't think any one of us would have minded if she had stayed the hell home.
Check your PMs?

Let’s put this in perspective: could we set your camp up on a flat bed and drive it down the freeway at 70mph without any problems? Good, you’re ready for Burning Man!

Awesome read! I'm sure it will be helpful for the freshmen class. One suggestion as you add to it....maybe a plug for volunteering? A link to the BM Volunteering page?

Well done Gibson! I suggest maybe some additional things that may be not on the radar:
Ladies may want to have a covered cup for taking to bars,
Remind them the street signs will disappear,
If anyone asks you for/about drugs, its likely a narc,
Don't just have enough water, actually drink it,
Don't sit your naked ass on my camp chairs (eeew), bring a towel.

Very true, we didn't use a stove (we were 3 folks) and our camp had portopotties so we didn't use the main portopotties as much...

The one thing I would recommend to virgins; don't stress too much on the food. Bring food you would want to eat at home, but keep it simple. People often decide they need some special food for Burning Man, but if it isn't something you would normally eat, you probably won't want it on the playa.
Tortillas, lunch meat and cheese. Cans of soup. Stuff that will last a week in a cooler (or not). Pre-cook stuff and freeze it.
A small one burner stove and one pot will handle a lot of cooking. Throw in a skillet and have steak a couple of days.
Also, if you don't take showers (or cook spaghetti) you don't really need 3 gallons of water a day. But you do need 1-2 gallons of non-alcoholic fluids. Part of your water allocation can be fruit juice, gatorade, etc. And you need to keep up on your electrolytes and vitamins. Having a glass of OJ or Emergin-C every morning is important, even if you don't want to! The playa is a harsh dry place, it is important to stay hydrated. If you get dehydrated it is almost impossible to get re-hydrated!
