If you want to limit attendance, doing it randomly is probably closest in line with the spirit of Burning Man because it doesn't target any particular group, but that hasn't worked so well either because it is going to end up keeping the large contributors at home this year.

I'm not saying this is absolutely wrong, but I need a better reason to believe it. Why is random decimation the thing most in the spirit of Burning Man? I get that we don't want to judge, wanted to be radically inclusive, so I understand why some of the other methods might be against that spirit. But I don't think being picked at random is in line with the spirit. The best I could argue is that it is less out of line than some of the others.

The lottery approach has the following result: The playa is populated by a mix of the randomly chosen and the wealthy, and the extra value is captured either by the lucky or by deliberate speculators, instead of being captured by the community. And while the Borg is not the community, if they do their job with the right spirit, if they capture the value then some of it trickles down into the community, in that they have more to spend on playa services or can make tickets cheaper for others.

No matter what you do in a sold-out event with transferable tickets, wealth is going to be the biggest factor in determining who gets the scarce tickets. You can't stop that. The most you can do is control who it is that receives the surplus price that the wealthy are willing to pay. It's either going to be the lottery winning burners, the speculators (who won or who buy tickets from suckers who sell them at face value to speculators) or the org.

Which is most in the spirit of the event?

But raver chicks are hot.

Why else would I spend $250,000 on my custom Marathon coach with the rooftop spash pool and shower set up.

( Actually I have plans for my own mini-sound camp dedicated to Mel Torme, Nina Simone, Cal Tjader and the likes. )

The large sound camps are a big part of why I come to the playa. Where in the default world can you in one night see Oakenfold, then walk a bit and see Bass Nectar, then do it again with different DJ's for the next 5 nights?

And the comment that most of the people that flock to these camps do not contribute is comepletely baseless. While you are entitled to your own opinions, you are not entitled to your own facts.

i wouldnt say people come to the BM for the music. i sure didnt. but even if they do. last year there was phish fest and electric zoo at around the same time as burning man. both major music fests, if i was going for music i would easily have chosen one of those over BM. the art, people and community are the priceless characteristics of BM that attracts people, including myself to return (last year was my first). and yeah, getting rid of one group of people ie ravers or whoever detracts from what makes BM what it is.

Hippies have been gaining the upper hand in the Burning Man culture wars for the past couple years.

http://consumptionblog.com/2011/10/06/hippies-vs-ravers/

Burning Man Bureau of Labor Statistics (BMBLS) released a report on Wednesday showing that Hippies have now gained the upper hand at the event North of Reno.

Any efforts to solve the ticket problem should probably not be focused on a shrinking playa based cultural power base...

Dear sir/madam/individual that does not want to be constrained by gender,

I believe that eliminating ravers or any particular class of human will only temporarily resolve your issue. The actual resolution is clear. Eliminate all oxygen breathers.

According to my back of the envelope calculations almost 100% of potential Burning Man attendees consume oxygen. If you did a simple test at the gate you would eliminate everyone but visiting aliens and some single celled organisms.

Problem solved. You may praise me now. :P
If Neil deGrasse Tyson pulled me off the street to tell me about astronomy that would be awesome. If I was in Amsterdam when this happened and could convince him to tell me about it at a coffeeshop it would be ideal. Just sayin'.

What a great suggestion, we can bring back our Zydeco camp and without having to compete with a sound camp we can entertain fifty, maybe eighty burners at a time! Wait, this might not scale so good.

I am personally staging an event that features all of the above & than some the last week of August. I won't personally be attending. Tickets go on sale soon @ $265.00. Includes a token to vending machines that distribute "Red China Blue MDMA" and Prozac for the comedown. That free's up 16,800 tickets for me and my friends. It's a win-win.
Stay hydrated my friend.

This part actually makes some sense... Maybe not the full week, but if you are not there by Thursday, maybe you just should not be allowed to enter. Might not solve the ticket problem but it would help a little.

So, burning man is only for people who can take off one half to one full week? All others be damned? What. a. load. of. crap.

If it were up to me it would be people who make inane, repetitive posts on eplaya, as determined by myself.

I don't think anyone should be let in. The BLM should dig a moat and fill it with alligators. If you successfully get past that, you can stay.

I'm convinced that would solve the ticket scarcity problem.
