NY Times chimes in on tickets - uggggggg
Just saw this.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/13/arts/ ... .html?_r=2
As if the ticket mess was not bringing enough attention to this problem, now the NY times has something to say about it.

Ugghh indeed. It seems they've gone from aloof and uncaring to panicked and apocalyptic.“This has me waking up at night terrified,” said Marian Goodell, a founding board member and spokeswoman for Black Rock City, the company that organizes Burning Man in the desert outside Gerlach, Nev. “It is the end of Burning Man if we don’t solve this.”
I preferred aloof and uncaring.

Seemed like an adequate rehash of what was said on NPR last week.

Yes you are correct. No new news, but widely publicized news none the less.

I found the lack of an Oxford comma interesting. Are both scalpers and first-timers loathed? Wait wait, don't answer that.Selling tickets online makes it difficult to distinguish between veteran Burners, loathed scalpers and first-timers, known as birgins in the lingo of festivalgoers.

I think it's called the Oxford Comma because it's something the brits adhere to, and the yanks don't. I prefer it, but I don't think we need to get so far down the parsing examination of all vaguely relevent information that we reach some sort of Schrodinger's Punctuation.

If we can get 30% of the people who want tickets to punch out because they read that it's going to suck this year, there will be tickets available for the people who really want to go.theCryptofishist wrote:Ah, the Grey Lady chimes in. I think this is where we say:Put a fork in it. It's done.

I'm wondering if this whole fiasco wasn't a much needed wake up call for the organization. It's all well and good to try and keep to your outlaw roots, but at some point you need to get professional and realistic about such a large business(or charity whatever).knowmad wrote:To despondent.VultureChow wrote:Ugghh indeed. My mom.fenwick wrote:Hold on a second - does anybody still read the New York Times??
My mom is so cute. I told her about a month ago I was going. She had never heard of it. I told her it was an art festival where you camp out in the desert. I like camping, and art, so I figured she'd at least understand that. Showed her pictures of bliss dance and the temple. Told her it had a bit of a reputation as a drug thing, but that wasn't really the case. I thought she had forgotten about it. She's going to Myanmar in a week and has other things on her mind.
Last night she sent me the NYT article and wanted to make sure I had tickets and told me that my dad had a scalper that could get anything if I needed help. I told her I got one and thanked her for the offer without going into the whole no scalper thing.
I love my mom.

That almost sounds like some New Jersey love. Except she offered a scalper and not a "friend" that works in "waste management". I can't tell you how many times I've had to remind fellow Jersey residents that "friends" in "waste management" are not a good way to deal with ticket shortages or break ups.VultureChow wrote:

If Neil deGrasse Tyson pulled me off the street to tell me about astronomy that would be awesome. If I was in Amsterdam when this happened and could convince him to tell me about it at a coffeeshop it would be ideal. Just sayin'.

Hah! Or construction. I dated a guy named Nunzio who worked in construction but who was greeted conspicuously well at whatever restaurant we went to. We're North Jersey Jews, so money is the solution to most things, not violence. Or in at least one case, setting up your accountant and brother-in-law who are about to testify against you with a prostitute, video taping it and sending it to your sister.JCarter wrote:That almost sounds like some New Jersey love. My apologies for thinking no one reads the NYT. I figured ever since News Corp (faux news) acquired an interest in the paper, I figured there be even more negative press towards the event and the idea.
Soon Bill Orally will comment - if you didn't get burning man tickets, you were not meant to go, much like his kind words regarding a recent death in pop culture....
Face it - if those clowns running for President of the US was to learn of burning man - it be the death of burning man.
Re: NY Times chimes in on tickets - uggggggg
I dunno, if casual never-beens who don't post on eplaya or tribenet, and just entered the lottery on a whim, hear that Burning Man will suck this year maybe they actually will be more likely to sell their tickets. So the more news outlets telling them that, the better, I say.
And better yet, it makes casual never-beens who would purchase scalped tickets at prices above face value unlikely to do so.

You are severely misinformed. News Corporation own nothing of the New York Times. The NYT has even been labeled Murdoch's archnemesis.
Perhaps you were thinking of the New York Post?

New Corp/Fox has nothing to do with the NYT. These are the News Corp papers worldwide- way less newspapers in the US than you think.
