NEW lead on '04 assault

the outpouring of sympathy anf shared outrage has been tremendous (see post '04 assault witnesses? for details)

I want to emphasize that this was not an accident or a prank...since my first post the diagnosis is reconstructive elbow surgery including screws and metal plates costing more than $5K...i have good insurance this is not a plea for money. it just makes it more insane that this was all done so some violent asshole could get a $50 bike

Now i have a lead submitted anonymously (though i could probably get the person to testify if i needed to)

There was a clown camp around 9 o'clock and earth and I
overheard some people discussing that someone there had beat up
a guy and stolen his bike. The guy's name is Johnny, and they
claimed he thought it was a joke but later regretted it.
I dont know if this will be useful to you. Good luck on your
recovery.

if anyone can confirm or add to this PLEASE, let's make sure this person at least never gets into burning man again...i'm not out for vengence or to recover money, i just want to know that the system and the community works!

yo - that 'clown camp' you speak of was two doors down from mine -
the vodka infusions camp... one of ours was jumped the nite of the temple as well - snaked from behind - while getting on HIS bike and riding back to camp - we all missed it - save for a nice fella who stuck around cause he saw the whole thing - it was terrible - ours has a huge black eye and a gnarly scratch on the side of his face where the fist of the jerk connected.
the assualt smashed his eye glasses and his face - if you were within ear
shot of our camp - you could hear him bawling about it - such a nice guy -
didn't deserve that kind of action at all - and to think he's made the
journey from NYC to BRC for the past 7 years without incident -
at any rate - the description we got - was a d00d in sweat pants and no shirt - blonde maybe they said . . yea, that narrows it down - -

luck be with you and if you find the guy - please hang him from the
balless sac that resides between his thighs . ..

Hope you're still reading this. I was at BMIR when you came in to talk about the incident. It really bummed me out at the time, and I'm very glad this seems to be moving to a satisfactory resolution for you. So much anonymous crap gets pulled on the playa, it's good to know that that someone's owning up to their behaviour this time.

I guess you got you're answer. It is funny and a little of a side note, that as a result of you're dismal meeting with this guy has changed his life far beyound burning man. You have markedly changed this man for the good (hopefully) his decision to turn himself in was a direct action stemming from that change. I myself think it was a cry for help and finaly he saw the opportunity to sieze it. Life, it's weird like that, go figure.

I am sorry for what happened, but I had a clown camp at 9:00 and Neptune. Please know that we had no involvement with this other camp. We have been going to BM since 1996, and plan to attend for years to come. This year we were the Dark Carnival, and had 6 paintings of wicked clowns in front of our camp. We will, again, next year, have clown art and are affraid of the repercussions of this clown incident. We are about clown love. We don't come out to BRC with strangers or violent people. Don't think all clowns are bad because of one dumb guy. We wish for the victim, a speedy and full recovery.

Thanks for the welcome, but I'm done here. I just wanted to send sympathy to the guy who was attacked. I really do feel sadness about how jaded many people seem around here. I'm getting back to my BM prep. If you see the Dark Carnival and wicked clown art around 9:00 next year, come by and soak up some clown love.

i certainly don't blame all clowns anymore than all people who drink.

i'm sure the perp did not go out that night with the intent to do the damage he did but then neither do drunk drivers, but the grim reality is i just got out of surgery yesterday with 13 screws and 2 metalk plates in my elbow.

the community has been great and many people have asked to help financially and otherwise. For now there is one thing

One thing that would just take some more net time is to maybe try to track down my bike,. not worth much but seeing it is at the crux of this incident it would make me happy to get it back...1990ish trek hard rock, has a black blackburn rear rack and a single black saddle bag (that i guess may be gone), it has/had an LED headlight, it has a trailer hitch attackment on the rear hub "

Good luck to you. Unfortunately when you get that many people together and create a city, you get all types: the filthy old men, thieves, violent thugs, etc. Luckily that's not all it is. I hope you regain full use of your arm, and good luck finding the bike.

Camp FrogStar loves clowns, scary, artistic, happy and even banal. The Dark Carnival had some of the finest, caring, honorable and hardworking peps on the playa. I personally hung out at the Dark Carnival nearly every night and witnessed good friends welcoming everyone in to have a great time. Even the heckling clown (actually a temporary defector from our camp) was calling people in to drink his special homebrew, and hang out for a while.
What is ironic is that the only people we had to eject from our mutant vehicle were extremely intoxicated, non-masked, angry young men from other theme camps who threatened and nearly punched out the kindly women who created the FrogStar vehicle.
We saw one of them, sobered up, in his own camp, on Sunday. You wouldn't know him from Adam, except that we recognized his dusty face, and had caught his name. If we had known what camp he came from at the time of his actions, we definitely would have escorted him back there. But we wouldn't assume that EVERYONE from their camp, or that all drunk, angry young white men were obnoxious, sociopathic kickboxers like himself...
A violent jerk is a violent jerk. Anyone can paint thier face. Don't assume that all clowns are psychopaths just because one guy decided to assume a temporary identity. The face paint won't hide the person underneath.
If your freinds are getting too f'd up for their own good, take responsability for them and don't just turn them lose to wreck havoc on the rest of us! If you think that the people you want to bring with you are likely to become out of control and dangerous, then maybe the unstructured and free-spirited realm of BRC is not for them. Some people, like your pets, are better left at home. After all, the playa is a great place, but it certainly is not for everyone.
