I don't get the day off for it. I just have to be jealous of the people that do get the fluff "holiday" off. It's all about shopping.

In Canada we have "Family Day" - At least it is honest on why we have the day off.

Sucks and blows living on the Monday-street-sweeping side of the street, which also happens to be the leeward side where most of the trash accumulates. And I just don't get anyone older than three tossing trash on the street. People are horrible. Somebody should do something.

But not all provinces recognise Family Day. I'm stuck at work today , because I work in the province of quebec

The Federal Government does not recognise it either, so the federal offices in Ontario are open too.

Here in Saskatchewan, we have only had Family Day for a few years...

So, when the US president changes, does the holiday get better/worse or remain the same??

It's a federal holiday. Which means anything run by the government is closed. Most other people have to work though. Unless they can't find sitters for their kids or work for a semi cool company (unless it's unpaid). Then still some of them work and have their little people running around the office all day.

So, federal holidays are unpaid in the US? Hmmm... So, not really a holiday for the people, just public servants. Sorry!

Family Day was a Statutory Holiday - paid.

I would not be surprised to find out that people working for the one time great state of California got it off without pay... I know I'm biased, but civil service jobs are paid decently (although not as well as similar jobs in the private sector), and have benefits, and have retirement (although both the healthcare and the retirement are paid for, in part, from the moneys that they don't get but private does) and having solid middle class jobs gives the economy stability, and the culture stability as well. Crap, culture is the wrong word, but there is a greater benefit to these jobs than just for the employees... And not just economic either. Plus, they have been, historically, a great way for minority communities to work their way into the middle class...
So, I think that the state (any state, not just CA) who is forcing their civil servants to take off time without pay, is doing long term damage on a number of fronts...

Oh well...

I was in Quebec one winter. It was absolutely BEAutiful. F'ing cold but it was a winter wonderland!!! And I had the best-est hot chocolate ever at some restaurant **nostalgic**

And yes, we get a queen's birthday holiday - not on the same day as her b'day. Rumour has it that a lot is Australians voted against being a republic because they thought it would lead to one less paid holiday.
