I completely agree with the "close the gates on wednesday" contingent. It's a great idea. Cuts population and cuts problems. We certainly noticed a change in vibe on thursday. I remember riding down Esplanade on thrusday afternoon, in fact, and remarking how crowded the city seemed to have become overnight and how people weren't talking to each other as much.

Sam, again, nutball (hugs!...as I mentioned on the changing the day of the burn thread, you are a nutball in a cute sort of way). Hello, inclusivity? It's up to you to talk to people. It doesn't matter if 'people' aren't talking to each other as much. You make it what it is. I talked to plenty of people on the weekend. That said, yes, Monday to Thursday were my favourite days, but so was Saturday night. I kind of like the craziness that thousands more people bring. It made riding on the esplandade that much more challenging.

It will only get bigger. Suck it up or make your own event. I'm bringing more people next year, and, for the record, they are all over the techno dance camps. hahaha! They are also all over the rest of the stuff there.

Oh, and cutting down on problems? Doubt it. The Deep End was attacked by a guy freaking out early in the week who smashed up their bar and a speaker. The cops had to be called. I encountered more creepy learing guys before Friday than I did during the rest of the event. Yes, they were 'participating': one group came by to hose us down and demanded that I take off my shirt to do so. I scoffed, of course, and they hosed me anyways, but they were really after the naked chick hug and were put off by my refusal. Another was part of an esplanade camp. I can deal with it, but like I say all of my 'episodes' were before the weekend. Closing the gates early, blahblahblah, would not solve that.

The potties were cleaner than any other event I've been to. Thanks pottie people!

shit, some of us have been there for over a week come friday. We are sleep deprived and moody. I had a fight with my best friend about pudding for god's sake. FWIW, I found the esplanade on Friday night to be the least crowded of all of my burns.

No, closing the gates early thwarts the open-armed inclusion that Burning Man has perpetuated. Let's not make this an exclusive club, people. Hell, my camp neighbors were from Canada. Others were from Europe. Some of these people couldn't make it until Friday. They put so much effort and cost into getting just a few days of the playa fever and would've been heart broken if the gates were closed so soon. I say, the more the merrier and the more we have the more involved with each other we must become. Burning Man Project is an experiment in community. We already see the effect that closed boundaries have on immigration and economic growth in other countries. Then again, I'm against nationalism and feel it's a political waive that will someday fade away. We can't keep living in a bubble people. In the American Dream bubble or otherwise. We'll just have to deal with the BRC population growth in as positive and efficient and all-encompassing manner as possible so stop whining!

There was one interesting factor that occured this year that I certainly wasn't expecting, and that is the active advertisement of the event. I'm not just talking about the media & journalistic reports, but actual paid advertisments for the event. I heard several advertisements for the event on Kfog radio here in San Francisco and the event also appeared in the New York Times Calendar of Events Travel section. There may have been other instances but I'm only aware of these because I saw them first hand.

Not because of any pro-active participation on our part. We have always come to do interviews if asked (what you heard on KFOG might have been the interview they asked for, but we did not do ADS), but we still don't advertise the event. In fact if we hear about a Calendar of events listing, we will usually ask not to be included, since such listings can cause folks to show up unprepared.
