Relax! There are only 17 tickets on the STEP have queue anyway. Currently, there are a little over 21,000 on the STEP want list. So, we are going to suspend adding to the STEP want list until we get some more flow on the have queue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Let the whine flow
the odds are 1 in 1235 of getting a step ticket...
oh wait it's not a lottery this time, cause we had a lottery, so we wouldn't need to do a first come first serve system, but isn't STEP a first come first serve, oh no confused again.....
we had a lottery so we didn't have to do all this server crashing que thing, but it happened anyway. nice

20000+ people without tickets, 200 STEP tickets supposedly available................ yeah this won't end well.
I keep hearing that "We're very confident that everybody who wants to go to Burning Man this year will be able to" mantra over and over in my head, even though BMORG abruptly stopped saying it a few weeks ago.

But the email I got right before STEP opened said that there were "a couple hundred" that had been put back into the system over the last several days?!There are only 17 tickets on the STEP have queue anyway
I am confused....
What is this quintessence of dust?

Yeah, "17" tipped me off. I tend to use 7 as the last digit when I invent numbers. I doubt I'm the only one.Psycho wrote:That's not an actual quote, he just made it up...FeetOfClay wrote:But the email I got right before STEP opened said that there were "a couple hundred" that had been put back into the system over the last several days?!There are only 17 tickets on the STEP have queue anyway

Other possibilities: 13, 42, 666...

Re: Let the whine flow
Perhaps BMOrg tossed in a couple hundred from the 10,000 tickets they pulled from the main sale...
Can you at least admit that nuclear explosions are awesome!?
Re: Let the whine flow
42 would have been good... I'd have stopped reading right there.theCryptofishist wrote:Yeah, "17" tipped me off. I tend to use 7 as the last digit when I invent numbers. I doubt I'm the only one.Psycho wrote:That's not an actual quote, he just made it up...

Re: Let the whine flow
from Will Case:
"Welcome to the STEP Announcement List...
"...We will reopen the list periodically as a few hundred tickets are sold. This will happen on a revolving basis contingent upon the flow and rate of exchanges that transpire. We will not be sending any further warning emails about the pending pause or the reopening. It is up to you, the WANT-lister to check back via your URL as you see fit"
Really? Why not give out information? Is it supposed to be more fun this way?
I am baffled

Re: Let the whine flow
It could be that it is to avoid a rush, like we had today. If the server capacity was rented (which is something I'm completely willing to believe--I saw "amazon" in the url) then they don't have to scale up and down the capacity at intervals. Also, if you're not checking often, they can claim that you don't really want to go.

I can certainly understand that, but Zero information is a bit cruel at this point.theCryptofishist wrote:It could be that it is to avoid a rush, like we had today. How about: We'll re-evaluate every Tuesday. We'll only announce at noon. We'll let you know when we're close.
Anything would be better. This is just a very disconnected and passive way to deal with it.

This isn't the end of the world as we know it.
It's just something new.
Anyone remember the first time they tried to ride a bike without training wheels?
...
Me either, dad put me in a helmet for round 2.
Seriously though, we're all trying to figure this thing out and some of us aren't going to make it to the Playa this year. Plain and simple. But you know what? Not every burner makes it to the playa EVERY year. Some of them don't even go once every five years.
I was told that one of the main reasons why Burning Man is held on the playa is because it's such an inhospitable environment, that it requires a lot of rugged self reliance and rugged community to make a city out there. Sacrifices have to be made. Water has to be hauled in and waste has to be hauled out. The city needs to be built and torn down.
It's not easy getting out there, it's not easy surviving out there either. There's heat, dust storms and the playa is so alkaline that it eats the skin off some people's feet. It was the kind of place no Mainstreamer would vacation given the option of going to Cancun or Palm Springs.
So? Inspite of the fact that it's fricken hot, and that the dust eats your skin, oh ya, that it's dry as hell, and that 4-6 hour waits in the entrance and exodus lines are common, people STILL want to go there. And why wouldn't they? It's totally worth it! We've made it pretty easy to live there for a week, some camps have life pretty comfortable (Ice, icecream, airconditioning, showers, blended margaritas, snuggle parties)! We've even had a pretty easy way to get tickets, people could log in from all over the world and just buy them till there weren't anymore. And until last year, that wasn't a problem...
Either there was massive interest in the Burner Lifestyle or...IT GOT TOO EASY.
So now getting a ticket is hard. What the hell, I like a challenge

The server was fine when I tried. Only I miscalculated PST... late by an hour. All gone.

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.

Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.

, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

YES, I went down the street, so proud of myself. I then turned down another street to head back to the house. I think I had the shit-eating 'look-at-me' grin on my face! Awesome, Wonderful! Until BAM! Who parked that car by the curb? I did not see it parked there, hit it hard and ended up on the trunk of the car. Luckily did not break anything. I looked around like a cat, no one saw me. I think I walked the bike back home.....Smenkare wrote:This isn't the end of the world as we know it.

Re: Let the whine flow
they didn't really have helmuts when i was a kid. carseats either. Little sister would sleep up in the back window ledge.
Unjon I would be very whiney if I didn't have a ticket. More screamy, fit throwy really.
I'm already taking steps for next year just in case we don't get tickets in 2013. Looking for storage for our little camp infrastructure so even if we can't go, if anyone in our little camp gets tickets they can get the hut, furniture, and other stuff and use it. I think the ticket hit for 2013 no matter how they sell them is going to sell out in the first hour and i'll go ahead and predict server crashes due to heavy traffic. Whether that traffic is legit, or script driven.
*edited tp add: sorry about the misspellings and grammar, i'm trying to type this with a sleeping baby draped across me and it's not working too well. Poor thing has a fever and sinus gunk.*

Re: Let the whine flow
Wow! I did the exact same thing! I was so proud of myself, then I forgot how to use the brakes (they were the type where you pedaled backward once to stop the bike) I was so scared that I purposely hit the back of a car to stop. I was about 7 or so. Then about a year later I did the "look ma! No hands!" routine...ended up with stitches in my elbow.YES, I went down the street, so proud of myself. I then turned down another street to head back to the house. I think I had the shit-eating 'look-at-me' grin on my face! Awesome, Wonderful! Until BAM! Who parked that car by the curb? Please do not try these tricks at home. They were performed by professionals.
