Re: Acceptance
I don't understand the vitrol towards those who don't want to chase down a ticket. So what if they want to skip this year. Maybe the stress of not knowing for sure is not worth it to them. So What? Does this affect YOUR burn? We don't know them personally or their situation. Fuck, live and let live...
To those who have decided to throw in the towel this year, best wishes to you, have a great year and hope to see you in 2013.

Oh my god, it's HUGE!
Re: Acceptance
i think it is easy to understand..
some of the folks registering their intent of going anymore also tend toward registering their complaints with the ticket system..
some of these complaints hearken back to the whole discussion we've already had, saying things that may be filled with 'wrong' (or that some feel is) stuff.. things that have been hashed out..
some of the people registering intent to not go give off a strong 'sour grapes' type vibe..
basically uhh, i think most people would be fine with someone saying 'yeah i just dont wanta go anymore'
but many people are saying things like 'i dont wanta go anymore because larry harvey thinks im not good enough'
'i dont want to go anymore becaused the LLC is punishing people like me' etc..etc...
they are mixing up their intent to not go with something that we know brings lotsa strife: the reasons for/why/against/for the lottery/step/etc..

Gee.. that's nice of you considering I might just possibly be a virgin this year (if STEP works out), I wish some of you people could be a little bit more kind to newcomers. I understand your mad and just as frustrated as I am, but I would appreciate it if you didn't take it out on us.Marscrumbs wrote:I like passive aggresive. But really it would start to spawn a whole lot more related events. There will probably be a little lag time but last years late sellout and this years early sellout should get things moving!

If it were, we'd be lots happier. And considerably richer.

I understand that, but man... for being a possible virgin this year and this whole fiasco, you'd think people would come together rather than fall apart. Or maybe I'm just overly positive.

Irony. You're soaking in it.
Re: Acceptance
Some of them are coming together. (More eventually will). The regional events are blowing up right now. You're looking at a really small sample of humanity here. And we're jonesing for a fix of playa.VampireKitten wrote:I understand that, but man... for being a possible virgin this year and this whole fiasco, you'd think people would come together rather than fall apart. Burners are not an alien species with the moral high ground; we're ordinary, flawed humans who (sometimes) get to see another side--or greater intensity--of the self and others . . . & then struggle to bring some semblance of that back to the default world. With varying degrees of success.

What do you want flowers. The tribe is fucking angry about this.A lot of people were fucked out of tickets by this lottery.A lot of people who have been going to burning man when you were in grade school did not get tickets. There is a lot of anger here so just wait a little before you ask about acceptance. For most were rejected. You will find what you seek

Exactly socks. Unfortunately you seem to be seeking acceptance for your anger & disapointment. I can accept you are angry. But continued vitriol won't get you a ticket. It just makes you miserable.socks wrote:What do you want flowers. Eplaya is the yang. Everybody is panicking. DON'T PANIC.VampireKitten wrote:I understand that, but man... for being a possible virgin this year and this whole fiasco, you'd think people would come together rather than fall apart. Or maybe I'm just overly positive.
Veterans who have been going every year and can't handle the idea of sitting one out are chronic. They're addicted. They're jonesing.
Since 2004 I've had to sit out 4 times, including last year. People spent years telling us it was better last year, that Burning Man had jumped the shark, and so now I get to hear everybody talk about how last year was perfect. Possibly the best ever. And how they're homesick because it's been a month since Burning Man. Pussies.
The first Labor Day you have to sit out the burn is depressing but having a real, live summer of freedom and opportunity to do OTHER things is somewhat liberating.

And as awesome as that sounds, if you've ever taken a moment to read the Tipping Point, http://www.gladwell.com/tippingpoint/ or watched Freakanomics, understands that Burning Man, the culture, the idea, has reached that Tipping Point. It's become an epidemic, people WANT to understand the idea, what that means to be a Burner, and find out what this Burning Man thing is all about.. I step out of my loft and I see spirit hoods everywhere, hawked by every manner of vendor -- that was an epidemic. And Burning Man is no different. My parents and friends who didn't even know I went, started asking me about it.
I guess we have a choice at this moment.. to make it an epidemic (to quote Malcom) of positive change or have the whole thing blow over and devolve. As with all epidemics, everyone will be infected, but soon, there will be those who are inoculated and don't succumb to the illness. I started out a month ago being really upset about the ticketing.. but i'm learning that over time, the hoopala will die down and Burning Man will enter a new phase. It won't be as secretive as it was (before we brought TV and Cell towers to the playa) but it will eventually reach a balance point. who knows what that will look like?

Why would you want to skip this year? It's going to be the last year, and bassnectar and daft punk are going to put on a massive set right after they burn the man.

i hope now most of you (ticketless) burners are beginning to see the control this event is having over your lives. not having a ticket is quite literally like withdrawal and you can clearly see your addiction/dependency in the negative emotions you're feeling. and for the lucky ones who will have their chain of addiction broken by not being able to go another year in a row - you'll see it for what it is: not that important/significant/spiritual/etc.
