Hi my name is Skip Frake and this will be my first year at Burning Man. My wife Carolyn and I have been longing to come home for a long time. Our kids got us the tickets. We can't wait to get there. We would love to camp with a theme camp large or small , and dive right in ,anyway we can be of help. We will be bringing lots of positive energy and love. We are both 60 years young . We are eager to participate ! We live in Minneapolis Minn. and plan on driving down. We would like to stay that extra day to Moop our campsite. Yes we've been following along for quite a while.

Luv Carolyn and Skip

Hello everyone!
My name is Mike Murray and I have finally been pulled in to the vaccume of light and love that people like you are generating. For that I thank you, this will be my first time to the playa. I have been to events related to burning man and gatherings of burners starting on the summer of 2002, but not as intensely as in the last two years. I have been both happy about getting a ticket and frustraited about the situation for Burners that don't know yet. I have a deep desire to help create the enviroment envisioned by those who have the capacity to do so.
I live near Sacramento, Ca and I hope to get together with people who might welcome a virgin burner. I hope that I can bring a bit of creativity to burning man and maybe some hugs.

Peace and love
-Mike

Hi Gabriella, Judi, PurplMyst, Skip & Carolyn, and Mike! :D Welcome, Beautifuls!

The 2012 Theme Camps forum will be useful for a lot of you:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=283

Note especially the threads entitled "Theme Camps Seeking Participants" and "How to Join a Theme Camp". If you don't see anything you like, wait a few weeks and check again. Note: theme camps are optional, and usually require a fee and some work. So if you pick one, make sure you like the cut of its jib.

If you have camping skills, you may prefer to come as you are, camp with a friend, your mate or small group and just introduce yourself to your neighbors--you'll have some!

Anyway, welcome, & watch out for the puddles of snark. Scarcity of tickets make this an emotional time for many. If you got lucky, don't stew about it, & don't be guilty (guilt is sweet, but you can't eat it, wear it, or fire it point-blank at a shirt-c0cker)! Harness that energy to prepare, and be ready to be a vibrant new part of a city in which everything you do has an effect.

Hello, and welcome to you the latest new people!
There is so much great info available on this board - the search works pretty good.

Suggest you stay away from the snark on the ticket threads - it’s somewhat charged at the moment.

If you have questions, and are a bit afraid to post, seek out someone who seems to post reasonable answers and Private Message them, That’s what i did when I was new and a bit intimidated - and it worked great.

A big hello from the East Coast of NS, Canada. I have my ticket and am planning on being at Burning Man for my first time, I have been following BM for 13+ years and have always wanted to attend but the hurdles were always daunting. I attend a big party here, during the same time frame, on this side yearly for the last 35 years where I am a large part responsible for its organization and carry through, This year my responsibilities will be delegated out. I did make a trip out to SF. last year to make acquaintances and begin the process to make it possible for me to join in this celebration. I will be making my way from SF with a group of experienced Burners so I should be ok as far as transport and lodging goes. Due to my very highly developed usefullness abilities, I think there will be no end to finding things to help out with, including but not limited to, mechanical, welding, machining. fabricartion, millwright, custom carpentry ,electrical and plumbing skills on the physical side and the logistics for organizing and carry through of many large construction projests. Looking forward to meeting as many other burners as possible during a one week stay, see ya there!!

Hello eplaya Snarks!

Greetings from northern Germany. After lurking around the corners of this forum for two years, i finally registered.
I have a ticket for this year. Last year was my first year on the Playa. Being 40`ish, i had gradually lost true interest in about everything. TTITD gave me back a passion for art, people, spirituality, music... It gave me a good hard kick in many ways. Now they killed it.
Too harsh? Hmm, i REALLY hope i am wrong. But i have seen a lot of good-energy-scenes dying because of a hype, leading to too many people coming, too many of the wrong people coming, them taking over and killing "the spirit". It never came back anywhere.

Well: I will be full on this year with volunteering, project, costumes and some interactive rollplay.

See you all on the playa.
I am hoping for the best.

Don´t give home away!

(Remember, if you're in Germany, there's always good bread. Baking in general, and yes, you're fucked if you're Paleo, but really, really good bread. Just sayin'.)

Remember, newbies, this is a good year to get to work with established camps. Depending on the camp and the impetus behind it, many will be short and looking for good members. There is a school of thought that you shouldn't belong to a camp your first year--otherwise you'll be made to work like in gulag, and not enjoy yourself. I'm not going to say that that is wrong. The world is your oyster this year, and you can make all sorts of mistakes. Which ones are up to you.
And as someone who started going in 2002 and didn't get a ticket in the previous sales, I say "Fuck you!" to any one who piles on that "virgins shouldn't get tickets" crap.

Welcome to Eplaya.

Sounds like you have a great skill set. I really want to learn to weld (one day I will learn this). Here’s hoping I run into you on the Playa and you can tell me what millwright is!

Welcome to all the Virgin Burners, good to hear from you.
To introduce myself; have been lucky enough to be able to go every year since 2008.
This year I'd like to give back to the community, am looking for a large project (preferably metal) where I can put in a few months work.
I already have a ticket.
I'm a sculptor/artist with some experience in metal and other materials, but because I live in Europe I'm having trouble making the contacts needed to pave the way for the project and I to come together.
Not sure where to go from here?
Can anybody help?
Suggestions welcome,

Hi Tackykate!

Have you joined the European regional lists? Mouse over your country here, then click on it:
http://regionals.burningman.com/eu_index.html

Join the All-Europe General list here:
http://regionals.burningman.com/eu.html

You could join the All-Europe and country-specific lists and volunteer your sculpting skills. I don't know how common it is to work on a really large piece in Europe and ship it all the way over to the 'States--probably costs quite a lot--but you never know. If you're planning to come to the US significantly early, you could also use the map in the "Regionals" area of the main Burn site to find people in the state you'll be visiting.

Your English is far better than my Russian. (I have forgotten almost all of it!) I met some really wonderful Russians at the Burn in 2008 . . .

If you registered in the Main Sale but didn't win a ticket, you still have a chance to get one via STEP.
http://blog.burningman.com/2012/02/news ... cy-change/

You might also be able to buy one from a Burner who has to cancel his plans, so make sure to tell your friends you're looking.

Once you're here in the US, join the regional Burner mailing list for whichever state you spend the most time in:

My name is Marilyn. Burning man was the most important thing I've done for myself for a long time,( about 30 years). It meant so many things, the phyical challenge, I have fought several illnesss and made it through. Burning man helped me to feel alive. I felt so exillerated and loved the laughter, the magic, and above all the 10 principles. I travel a lot on the internet and discovered the burning man site. I started to read ( Dec. 2011) and realized the basic founding principles, were mine too. I read eplaya almost every day, and frankly have become obssessed with all things BM. My first burn last summer was a hugh challenge. I flew in from London Ontario Canada, no one in my conservative world had a clue about BM. My burn was very hard and I feel I missed alot. When I got home I thought I'd never be able to go again. After a week I felt down, and wished I had met more people, and was sorry that I missed a great deal of the art. I will be honest here. I read in many places that if you experienced a poor burn you were doing some thing wrong, and needed to look at yourself. I took that to heart. I read eplaya and felt so much better. The cutting humor, some of which I didn't get, the sexual openness that just wasn't part of my world was wonderful. I found a thread that gave me hope. The camp I stayed with did not reach out in any way .It seemed as though the main crew were having their own private party, and when approched I recieved the cold shouder. Sevral people posted the same thing. That was it, I was going to try again. Maybe this camp thing should be in a different thread, but it was a hugh part of my experience. I know this is a very long posting, and if the moderater thinks I should shorten it I understand. I now feel apart of eplaya, and it's great. I would like to thank the long time burners on eplaya for all you teach us about the true meaning of BM. you are amazing people.

Hi Martiena! :D

I've never seen a post on ePlaya edited strictly for length. (I love to write long posts when sufficiently moved, or bored, or overly caffeinated.)

First Burns are often not easy. My first Burn was not my best Burn by a long shot. I saw and did some amazing things and it was remarkable simply because it introduced me to a place I'd had no idea existed, but as far as physical comforts, or efficient use of time, or costuming or social comfort . . . well, it was kind of all over the place. It was an adventure. That was all it needed to be, though.

Check your PMs . . .

Hi Burning Man Community - I have never been and have not been able to get tickets yet - thats the bad news.
I am looking to get on board with a project / camp this year. I am a lighting designer, I work in the entertainment industry as an artist, designer, electrician audio / video tech. I am hoping someone who has a really awesome project happening this summer can use my help either creatively or technologically and give me a home / way in to Black Rock 2012. I am NYC local. Please email me if you are interested or want to talk or see some of my work. Much Love.

Hi Vadim!

Welcome. Join the regional lists for your state and the states near you. On the east coast it particularly makes sense to join lists from neighboring states, with the others so close.

http://regionals.burningman.com/na_index.html

Check the 2012 Theme Camps (this will be much busier in a month or two) and write the intriguing ones a nice letter of intro:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=283

I'm sorry to hear you don't have a ticket yet, but let all your friends know you're looking, make a packing and shopping list, and get your time off anyway. The prime season for a change in plans seems to be June--people drop out in June every year when the event gets close and life gets in the way, gas prices soar, or new folks catch The Fear--all sorts of reasons. Be ready, & it just may work out. The best of luck to you. :)

Hello - I've been lurking about for a while, so thought maybe I should post a Hi

terrible at introductions.. I'm somewhat shy, not big on talking about myself... hence the delay...

I've not been to Burning Man, yet (got in to the first 2k of STEP, we will see how that pans out..) - was meant to go about 5 years ago, but had to pull out, and this would be the first year it's really feasible again, so here's hoping!

I'm from Canada, but like in the UK.. have started meeting up with the London Based Burner Community, who are all types of lovely and making me so much more excited about the getting involved... though now I am trying to figure out how to get the time off/money to go to our Regional as well (I'm already invested in going to North America in late August/early September, as if we don't get tickets, my sister and I will do something else together .. and hopefully my best friend too... don't see them often now.. what with the ocean being in the way and all)

Erm.. that might be it.. I will hopefully be able to bring honey from my bees over to share with people (that probably isn't as impressive to other people as it is to me.. I am just starting beekeeping and way too excited)

That's definitely it..

bah. Honey's pretty exciting now that we're all worried about sudden hive death... And yours wont be the stuff that comes from bees fed sugar...
(I would check with customs to make sure that you can bring it in. I know that honey's sterile, but does customs? or tsa?)

I've checked CBP - as long as it's for personal use ( and not to be fed to bees) then it's "generally admissible"... but these things change, so will keep an eye on it!

Hi Omnicia! I think bringing honey from your own bees is pretty damned cool. I love it that the customs stipulation is "personal use".

I happen to know a person who makes biscuits and bacon on the playa every morning, and it goes over BIG. I'm sure he'd be happy to meet you. You could also serve it to your neighbors on something, or have tea every day at 4 and see who wants in. Or bring some to the ePlaya Meet n Greet on the Thursday of the event at Barbie Death Camp and Wine Bistro. Label it as homemade (home-raised?) in the UK so people listen extra intently with their tastebuds.

I think it's very fortunate that you got into the first STEP queue and hope that pans out for you soon. There's months for others' plans to change, and--while of course I don't know what will happen--it seems fortuitous, and I have my fingers crossed for you.

Hello, Playa name Dawn ('Red' seemed too obvious). Been 8 times, drive a tiny ATV disabled vehicle and have an RV trailer (if you know me, please don't post my name here). Been in theme camps and plan to continue that. Enjoyed visiting Anonymous Village.

Hopefully creating more costumes and sewing with mad skillz this year, we'll see. Looking to get together with other burners for 'stich and bitch' sessions in San Francisco or nearby.

Looking for a burner who works with leather and has a sewing machine that can sew leather. Hoping to hire or trade for a small project.

I would love to find a way to bend rebar for everyone. Is there a 'bend your rebar' camp?

Hello all!

My name is Danica and this will be my maiden journey to my virigin burn. Theough out the last six or so years I have read about burning man, had many a friend attend and tried to rally up troops to finally join me. This year my wife and I moved to the city (San Francisco) and became bombarded with reminders of just how important going to burning man has been for us. We figured if we could leave our life's behind to truck across state and start our new life in a new city then this would be the year we wouldn't let anything stand in the way of our burn. I think having waited so long and dreamt so grandly of the playa I know in my heart it will be a beacon for self expression spirituality love music and just some good not too old fashioned fun. It will be my home for a week that lives forever in my heart.

So now I'm submerging myself in all the burnertivities in dire anticipation for what will be my first burn.

To your wishes!
