Burning Man Personals?

Hey ePlaya,

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Burner friendly dating service? Craigslist & Match.com Personals can be keyword searched, but Plenty Of Fish cannot. Having been to the Playa and back a few times, I find myself less and less interested in dating 'default world' people, but there do not appear to be any well organized methods for Burners to find fellow Burners.

IIRC, someone tried this a couple of years back with lukewarm success. I remember CFM getting pretty up in arms about being denied entry though.. so it may have been the operation and not the participants.

Tribe used to be awesome for that stuff, but largely imploded a few years ago. There may be some Facebook groups out there that thrive, and similar on alternative social networking sites (anybeat, open.ly, and ning spring to mind, but there are likely others).

I remember a GLBT personals site for burners in beta a year or so ago. But since it's not coming up in search, I'm assuming it's gone. On playa you could try COSTCO.

Ok Cupid is pretty user friendly though (and free), and you can do keyword searches for people's interests. People tend to put a lot of effort into their profiles on there.

For those not familiar with it, POF = Plenty of Fish, http://www.pof.com, an online dating web site.

There is plenty of info about pof on the web.
They are immensely profitable.
Besides being a "morality" based site, like one of the other big ones, they are accused of fraud.
Fake messages generated to keep people using the site, tolerance of scammers because they help generate traffic, and even fake profiles are alleged.
Traffic generation.

They are now trying to force people to pay while claiming to be free.
And they ask for signup after a short time or immediately to get on the site.
This is the same red flag bookface has.

Useful sites don't need to do this.

How is POF a scam?

The OkCupid blog wrote an article awhile back about how pay dating sites make it statistically difficult to actually access live profiles because it's more profitable for pay sites to use subscribers (ie. people who can use the full messaging capabilities on the site) as incentive for non-subscribers to pay the site money for access to profiles, then to actually link subscribers to other subscribers.

If you're a subscriber to a pay dating site, you are an important (though unwitting) part of that site's customer acquisition team. Of course, they don't want to show you too many ghosts, because you'll get frustrated and quit, but that doesn't change the fact that they're relying on you your messages are their marketing materials to reach out to non-payers and convince them, by way of your charming, heartfelt messages, to pull out their credit cards. If only a tiny fraction of your message gets a response, hey, that's okay, you're working for free. Wait a second…you're paying them.

And that this interaction causes a negative feedback loop of low investment profile spamming by (mostly) men dealing with really paltry response rates from a pool of mostly inactive members, which drive potential mates (mostly women) from actually using the site, since their use experience of the site now consists of getting a whole bunch of impersonal messages from a random selection of unsuitable men.

Of course the blog entry was pulled because OkCupid was eventually acquired by Match.com at the beginning of 2011. But I've provided a link to an archive of the article at the top of this post.

I will neither confirm nor deny that I have met in person at least 70+ girls of very above average physical and other qualities from POF without much of a problem through the years. It is what you make of it and how you know how to make something with it. It's also very much a generational thing. Say what you want. In this day and age of working on and with and around computers, it's just like anyyyyyyyyyyything else.

I'm saying that with anything, caveat emptor. I never saw too many. Maybe a Russian mail order bride here and there.. but 98% are legit. It's just all what you make of it like anything else. You learn to spot fake posts just like you spot spam on eplaya. It's really not hard and you just laugh at the gibberish and move on. Does spam on eplaya upset you so much that you slam the laptop lid down in disgust?

Generational meaning that within my age demographic of 21-35 that internet dating is WAY more commonplace than say 45-55. There may be a good amount more fakes in the age range that you're searching for, I dunno.. or maybe you're salted that no one is answering you so you assume that they're all fakes.. but.. for this demographic, I swear that at least half if not 2/3 of all the couples that I know met online. Literally. It's not an obscure, hidden thing anymore.. it's totally normal and accepted. If you're not a common douche, stand out amongst the throngs that are, act like someone with a brain and substance, then you have no problem.

I actually found it/find it super entertaining.. I love meeting people that I would never come into contact with normally. I've made lifelong friends and contacts and business contacts and girlfriends and now my fiancee for the last 2 years who I love to death and who is as much at home in our community as any one of you all. To me, it's the same exact thing as meeting someone just "around". These days we all have a tendency to get so involved with our work/social bubble that it gets hard to meet someone outside of that. Also, when I'm "out".. as in.. having drinks, whatever.. I just don't walk over and start talking to girls/women in a pick up kind of way. That's just not me. I'm with friends, I'm having fun.. but I'll appreciate from afar. In turn, girls that get picked up in bars or clubs aren't the kind that I really want to hang around anyway. So what do you do? I always found that the majority of women online were educated, with good jobs/careers and came in every variety/shape/personality/existence that you could think of.. and all in one spot. Ta dah!
