!@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
!@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
My vote would be to abolish Daylight Saving Time. The expense of changing the clocks cannot possibly be cost effective.
Changing something so fundamental as the time (in any given Time Zone around the World) is just as ridiculous as it would be to switch Monday and Tuesday.
Businesses routinely change their operating hours to match seasonal demand anyway. We all understand the concept of “winter hours” and “summer hours”. No need to make two changes.
A few years ago I missed an important business appointment because somebody’s clever computerized gadget tried to compensate for the change – and got it wrong. Yet another clear case of KISS.

we should ban daylight savings time so we no longer have to hear people complain about losing an hour of sleep.

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
I was working with two guys from India, and they asked me, "Why do you guys change the time?"
I responded, "My understanding is that we save power by spending more working hours when the sun is up, thus saving on lighting and other costs. Do you not do this in India to try to save power?"
They answered, "No. We just go to work an hour earlier."

Daylight savings should be abolished. If you need to work during daylight hours, adjust your start time accordingly.

I love Daylight savings time! All that extra sunshine! I used to be a hater of the time changes because I could never get used to it. But now that I have, I welcome it!

I don't really mind it. My personal schedule isn't really affected too much, and the few clocks I have are able to change themselves for me.

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
I personally can't stand the time change. Only because my dad has a thing for clocks.
We must have 40 or so clocks thru out the house. Thankfully, we live in AZ. So
I don't have to change them.
You all complain about it. Fix it. Get petitions signed and send it to whomever and
get it voted on.
And like FrogBird says. Get up earlier!!

Since they changed the dst date, all the auto stuff is even wronger.
Extra daylight?
They said that on the news the other day.
I think the days have the same hours regardless of the clock.
The dst model actually makes less daylight available to me.
I really detest it.

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
As for just starting work an hour earlier - if millions of businesses had to change the hours on their signs, business cards, web sites, and wherever else they post their hours everytime the clock shifted that would never happen. Most folks would just be stuck working the same hours.

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
DST is my alarm clock teling me the burn is right around the corner.
OK, It was started to get kids home from school an hour earlier so they could tend to the business of running a farm. So the put the clocks ahead an hour, they get an extra hour of sunlight to milk cows, fix tractor, whatever... It was easier than having ALL the school districts (usually run by tyrannical school boards (some things never change!) change their class hours. Of course, then we get this huge summer work season (misnamed "summer vacation") so again, kids had more time to help out around the farm. Notice it all ends roughly around the end of the harvest?
Of course, city kids think its an entitlement to go flock off, but a lot of school districts are going to Year Round Schooling because (a) they're not in the country, but in the city or urbs, and (2) not having the necessity to have kids home on the farm helping out, they can get kids used to the idea of slaving away at gtinding endless jobs at an earlier age to be good urbanites.
So riddle me this... WHY does europe ALSO go on DST... but a few weeks off from the states? I mean, unless you're, again, an agrarian, what's the use... and then, if ya gotta do it, why not make it uiform worldwide? Hey, here's an idea...
Abolish it everywhere, and shift schedules instead. But then I'd lose my BRC "alarm clock".

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
I like it, although I never tended a farm. It seems to be a leisure benefit for me, at this latitude, and has little to do with work. It used to mean softball games from 6-8 on weekdays. I lived near the equator for a few years with no time changes and really missed having days where the sun set later. barbequing dinner at any time of the year with a flashlight made me miss DST.

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
If it's a good idea, why isn't it a good idea all year?
Move the clock two hours ahead and be done?
Most kids go inside an hour earlier, because their tv shows, dinner, every other event, still starts at the same time, regardless of the sun's confusion.

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
Central Standard Time - NO daylight savings
In the summer here it says light till at least 10PM and the sun is up before 5AM. (I have had sunlight as late as midnight) In the winter the sun rises after I am at work and sets before I go home (dark both ways).
It affects me when I need to call someone on either coast. In the summer Florida is 2 hours ahead and California is 1 hr behind, in the winter Florida is 1 hour ahead and California is 2 hours behind.
So, daylight savings time here is kinda pointless... [Is there a way to get MORE sun in the winter?? That would be very cool]

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
What I like about Standard Time is that when I take BART home from work and the train gets out of the transbay tunnel and hits Oakland West the sunset is wonderful! Dramatic. Stunning. I know that's part of the whole winter/summer thing, too.
sunday morning is one of my walks with my father. I was up at an unholy hour (as demonstrated by the fact that god was not shining down on us) and all ready to go at "eight". My father wasn't. So we went at "nine". But we got to be in that weird cusp when it was simultaneously nine and eight. There was more traffic, more people, more dogs--including "the Nose" who sleeps in on Sundays, or maybe goes out for coffee, but barks at u s on Tuesdays. I tell you, when reality fucks with your reality it's a good thing. Makes you realize that you're not actually the master of your ship. Apart from that, yeah, it's a silly exercise that just frustrates most of us.
Elliot, if we can find a way to get Rush Limbaugh to rant for three days straight about DST then I think the whole thing might disappear.

Where are you, stretch? Sounds like you're up north, too.
(Incidentally, I just finished reading a book set--in part--in St. Peterburg, dealing with vampires. There was some discussion about how the "white nights" and two months of barely any light in winter affected their feeding habits. No one saw that digression coming...)

Re: !@#$%^&* Daylight Saving Time
Like Elorrum, I have spent time at the Equator, and it gets a wierd kind of boring, 12 on, 12 off. No variation. I live by the natural light cycle, as I have 2 dogs as "family". They know best. I have one alarm clock, it is in a drawer. I only take it out when I have an early flight to catch. In my twisted use of words, it's a "whole lot gooder" this way. I pay no attention to clocks.
Dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them’s making a poop, the other one’s carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge?

Heh, I am not quite that north. In the shortest day of winter we still get about 5 or 6 hours of sunlight. In the longest day of summer we might get 18 hours of sun. If you go north of the 60th parallel you start to get close to that never-ending day/night.
It is pretty cool to go swimming in a northern lake at midnight and still have sunlight

I'm sure. I remember July in Scotland when I was 14. We didn't swim or anything, but it was different than it is down here in the San Francisco bay area...

A few years ago I spent a couple weeks in Trinidad. It was very weird to have the sun rise and set at the exact same time each day. The concept of watching the sun set is completely foreign to me. I never did see the sun set there

And in Novgorod... Sunset at about 11:15, sunrise about 3-4 hours later. Of course, the winters are as dark as the summers are light, but it all balances out in the end.
