The Love Sub [www.lovesub.org] mobile chill space

Post by wilks » Mon Sep 13, 2004 11:34 pm

Hi you lovely people :)

Wanted to say a SWEET and MASSIVE hello to all who came and hung out in our remote controlled mobile chillout/makeout space THE LOVE SUB whilst out on the playa this year.

[It's the little Airstream trailer that self propelled itself around the playa and is covered in red EL wire and is full of red pillows inside...looks like a kid drew a picture of a trailer at night]

Super thanks for vistin', hangin' and makin' out etc - we must have had many hundred folk enjoy it over the week this year. We had to metaphorically throw cold buckets of water over a few couples (er, and triples too) at the end of each night...

If you tried to get on and were told we were full, we either were or more likely we were upholding the quality door policy ie you were 5 drunk frat boys who wanted to oggle at beautiful people in an intimate space.

Oh yeah, and the sleeping people - what's up with you guys? We removed about 2 of you an hour...GO HOME AND SLEEP!

We have just put together a little web site [http://www.lovesub.org] that tells the tale of what this is all about and and answers some of the regular questions we kept getting asking.

Check it out and drop a line telling us of your experiences in there...mail links to us on web site.

Love, light and positivity

Wilkinson [and Marshall]

PS I was the guy with the Brit accent who was driving half the time and throwing the sleeping people out...

PPS I been coming out to the playa 10 years...to those who say it ain't what it used to be or what it should be etc etc i say blah blah blah. It is still the most unique and special social experiment in the western world. Still the safest city for edge culture, for freedom, for crazy ass art cars, for women to bare their bodies without overt oggling (do a google for new orleans/mardi gras/tits for instance if you wanna see what the rest of society is like), for non-commercially driven human interactivity, still the only place where the social norm is really is community driven more than self driven...even if it is only for one week a year it matters dearly and deeply to me to know it is possible

I didn't have a chance to take a ride on the love sub, but it sure stood out for both my wife and I. We've been eyeing vintage Airstreams for a long time and setting one up as a chill space rather than a sleeping/living space looks mighty appealing. The saddest part is that you found the trailer under our noses in Santa Cruz- The best part is that we'll get to meet you and see the sub up close, in less sparkly light, minus the uncontrollable urge to give big smooches to everyone in sight, at the SF decompression party.

Cheers!

Finding vintage Airstreams to restore...

Post by wilks » Tue Sep 14, 2004 9:10 am

Heya and thanks for note...yes, we'll see ya the Decomp, come by and talk vintage aluminum!

There was a kinda eccentric guy in Santa Cruz called Rik Beeson, who had a whole bunch of old Airstreams on his property. At the time we bought the 58 Traveler in 2001 I didn't know much about them and the dude completely ripped us off. We paid $2500 bucks for this one, and the floor was totalled. If ya come accross this feller just keep your eyes open! We should have paid around $800-900 for it. The outer and inner skins were perfect which is why he was able to get me on the price, I now know you can fix outer panels waaaaaaaaay easier than a total frame off floor rebuild :)

If ya interested check out http://www.airstreamphotos.com/photos/s ... ppuser/155 for a mind numbing number of photos on how we did the frame off restoration, also many photos of another Airstream restore project, an immaculate 1990 345LE motorhome. I got amazing help from the Airstream Forum community and they asked me to document the rebuild for others to see and learn, which is why that is all so detailed.

Heh, I don't think all the gray hairs on that forum had any idea of exactly what we were finally plannning though! We're thinking of taking the Love Sub to an Airstream Vintage rally some time. Gotta dip into all kinds of worlds people! Variety is the spice of life...

Love and playa dust, out...
