Re: The Pier 2
So in terms of netting, should I just start making one big honking piece? What would be a good width? 10', 15?

Moonrise: Keep up the good work. You are a master at your craft. We won't hear from org until late March. As of now we are just prepping the horses and making sure they are well rested and ready to run
.
Mr.Coffee: Netting is an interesting one. We need a whole bunch of different nets. We will have the climbing rope ladders on the masts and we have found someone who knows how to do that. We will need some prop nets that aren't super important and we will need a net to climb from the ground onto the ship. If you want to work on that one I think that would work.
About 10-15ft wide by about 20ft is perfect!!!

The Pier was SO awesome last year. Glad it's coming back in any form. So many of my friends never found it.

Re: The Pier 2
That shouldn't be too hard. I'm willing to bet I can dig up a couple hundred feet of old hemp rope for the net.

Re: The Pier 2
Nice!!! Please, dig up as much rope as you can. We need like a mile of it. The more we can scavenge the better.
Re: The Pier 2
Moonrise- when you find estate sales in tahoe, let me know. I love to treasure hunt!
Problem w/ Pier 1-- when I would go scavenging for fishing poles and nets and stuff I pretty much would take $40 out garage saling, spend $5 on Pier stuff and $35 on stuff for ME. But it's FUN!

Okay, I'll try to let ya' know (are you sure??) haha!
I try to hit the wide variety of sales on Sundays when the stuff is free! Sometimes I'll stop in on Saturdays, later in the day, when again much of it is free. It helps tremendously when I explain the Obtanium is going to the Pier at Burning Man, Huuuuge help...they basically give me whatever I think we can use.

I find a lot of pier type stuff just by keeping an eye out for free piles along the roads here at the lake

I also run ads on craigslist, but uh, I think my computer got a virus from doing that...
I was told to ask for emails offering items to be titled; The Pier 2. Makes sense (duh!) it'll let me know they're probably from non-spammers. If I'm missing something, everyone please speak up.
We scored some GOOD stuff through craigslist and I'd like to use it again!

Fantastic! Congratulations, and I can't wait to see this again! One of the very few projects I got a chance to see last year.

Re: The Pier 2
The whole Pier Group is sooooooooo excited.
Please, if anyone wants to help, join in, play with us please send me an email mrschultz (at) gmail (dot) com. I am trying to be better about getting back to everyone, but as was the case last year I am sure I will trip on my own feet again. We are delegating though, so hopefully that will help.
I cannot say enough how amazing I think this project will be. This is not a crappy sequel (at least I hope not
), it is 2 separate art projects that live together in the same world. I am really hoping one day to build art similar to The Lake Opera Stages of Bregenz and this might be our small little homage to that.

Re: The Pier 2
This sounds great! I applaud you going bigger and better for 2012. I think I would have been pretty disappointed to see the same piece out there. Glad to hear it's evolving into something really cool!
Re: The Pier 2
I read up a lot ofter seeing this post. I love the idea of recreating La Contessa. This was way before my time. With all it's history it could be great melding of returning art. And a special tribute to both pieces and their builders.
Here's some more detailed info on what La Contessa was.
