I'm curious as to the many potential interpretations of WHAT distinguishes DEEP house from the many other kinds of house music.
Also if you really like deep house who are some of your favorite djs and or mixes. (I hung out at The Green Gorilla lounge alot!)
ie, Mark Farina, Tony Humphries etc
I know that you can use the same categories for both house and deep house such at 'hard' 'progressive' funky' etc so what is the essential distinction?
Thanks for opinions and time!

When it comes to deep house I am a snob. I find most true (in my opinion) deep house has a more loungy feel and is danceable but is best enjoyed in a lounge chair soaking in the emotion. The rest of it to me is just straight jackin house. Tony Humphries is known mainly for his garage sound (Not UK Garage or Speed Garage but the real deal). Mark Farina in my opinion plays jackin funky house. I tend to lean towards Wave Records when looking deep. Also Herbert he is really deep and experimental. Great deep house evokes emotion and stirs the soul. Jackin house moves the body and can be soulful but to me there is a difference. After nine years of spinning house I still find that I am learning. My mix is online at http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=298180&T=2333 it starts with what I consider to be deep house and works into a funky groove then into a bit more progressive and peak hour type tunes.
So hopefully I made some sort of sense. And please remember I am in no way the authority. It is like 20 people reading the same book. Some will see it the same and others will interpet it a bit differently.

Then you are listening to the same djs who are marketing a sound to only push their careers further. Deep doesnt have to equate to boring. There is a time and place for every type of music. There is a lot of music pegged into the "West Coast" sound that really falls into the Chicago sound that has not changed in years and years. As with anything progression is good preventing stagnation.Badger wrote:A synonym for 'boring'House Music question what is DEEP?
