Them foreigners sometimes words transpose just to throw off us...
Tis also why new english speakers are to say things like "Here I am happy to be".

I completed my project goals for March today. There was nothing happening at work so I was able to stop at noon and finish my fun work.

This month was about building technical prototyping and soldering skills.

Goal 1: Solder together an "intermediate difficulty" sound-to-light circuit kit. The first attempt was a humorous failure, I used 1.6 mm thick solder which is way too big and got huge globs and cold solder joints everywhere. The thing actually almost worked. The second attempt today used 1.0 mm thick solder which is probably as big as one should go with through-hole components.

Goal 2: Prototype an LED dimmer based on a 555 timer IC using plans I found online. This worked out pretty easy, mainly it was just an exercise in buying parts and keeping track of them. You can't dim an LED just by adjusting the voltage very well, you have to send it high speed on/off pulses which the human eye averages out.

Bonus Goal: Prototype a "prismatic" flicker LED using a high-intensity RGB LED, and three standard flicker LEDs as control switches via PN2222 transistors. This took a few tries as my practical understanding of bipolar junction transistors is a bit lacking. The result was a bit different than I had expected. I thought that red+blue+green would make white, which was only true if you looked directly at the LED from a distance. Surfaces directly illuminated by the LED were just red, blue, and green in a funky pattern. It did sort of look like a dancing multicolored flame, so it might still make an interesting lantern.

Next month is devoted to computer control: I am getting an Arduino and writing some programs.

Yea, but it will be under transport in the playapod thread so's I don't crosspost.

Those side pipes are for the shade support, but I had that stick of pvc, and thought if someone was bringing a utility trailer they could adapt a very quick shelter useing that method. 8)

Engineers don't generally upset me too much, but this realy sucked!!! :x

Take a heat sensitive electronic part that also generates a lot of heat and mount it in the hotest place you can think of!!!

The gizmo is called a pump mounter drive or PMD.

It controls the injector pump on my diesel truck.

To replace it, it just unplugs from a harness and 4 screws hold it in place.

So they put it UNDER the intake manifold between the cylinders, so the intake has to be removed to replace it.

Image

FUCK THAT!!!!!!!!!!

We reached in a small gap with a screw driver to pull the plug, cut the connector off, and added a 6' homemade harness.

They sell heat sinks for these things, but I had an old aluminum heater core, soooooooooo....

Image

Image

Image

That PMD is a $400 part and can strand you big time.

But not anymore!!!!!!!!

FUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

This may belong in "one item a day", but I put it here anyway.

Here's the easiest way to get money for Burning Man that I know of.

First, find a 20' saguaro cactus that wieghs 4000 pounds.

Oh, look, there's one now!!!!!!!!

Image

First rule is "DON'T TOUCH THE PLANT"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sling a rope under the bottom of the "cradle" and tip it up against the cactus.

Image

Throw a piece of carpet around the plant, then throw a rope over that and sinch it tight.

I put a chain around the top carpet to put safty "come-a-longs" on to make sure the plant can only fall toward the truck.

Dig down about 2'.

Saguaro roots are all at the surface so that they can take advantage of the little rain we get, and will extend as far from the plant as it is tall.

Those all come off.

Image

A lttle tug will lean the plant against the truck.

Image

This is where it gets exciting.

I have to move the truck forward so that the cradle will slide on the back pipe down to the balance point.

On a plant this big, I have to move fast enough that the cactus does'nt try to load itself.

Image

Now the root is exposed enough to put a chain under it and hook come-a-longs from the chain to the ends of the back pipe.

Image

I pull the truck forward just enough to pop any remaining roots, and if I hit the balance point just right, I can tip the plant on to the truck with one hand. (If you need more than one hand to load a cactus, your doing it wrong!!!) 8)

Once it's on the truck, it needs to be moved forward to distribute the load.

Image

Strap it down and we're ready to roll!!!

Image

Leave the spot looking like the plant was never there.

Image

Was at the job site at 8AM, left at 9:30AM.

Fuel to get to the burn is now paid for!!!! 8)

When the naighbors saw what I was doing, they offered me these.

Image

I'll net about $3000 from those. (Half of what everybody else charges.)

To plant, do the same thing backwards. 8)

Easy huh!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

Yep, now if I could only find some big ass cacti around here I guess my money troubles would be solved :? .

Kinda surprised that huge plant needs so little in the way of a root ball to survive transplant.

The inside of the plant is the consistancy of a watermellon, so it will servive for 3yrs. on that moisture while it regrows its roots.
