Bring back playa art!!!

Post by bullD » Thu Sep 09, 2004 1:55 pm

I feel that this year lacked playa art and leaned more in the direction of a big freakin rave. Not totally a bad thing but... Thankfully, the sense of community has not diminished. Not sure about 2003 but, 2002 had shit loads more random playa art than did 2004. Since searching out and discovering playa art is one of my favorite things to do ( the lilly pond and fire flowers of 2002 were basically religious experiences ), I am going to commit myself to acquiring funding for and bringing playa art next year. I also think that people need to get involved in the art car process much sooner this coming year rather than bitch about it. So, does anybody have any thoughts on this? Would you rather see more art or have more thumping in your ears? Any ideas on how to get more people involved in creating and installing playa art? Anything????

I'd just like to say thanks for the art that they put out in walk-in. I'd guess it was about 200' feet deep in walk-in between 4:30 and 5:00. I can't really describe any better than to say there were multi-colored prayer flags (I think) streaming off of wires from a central pole... I thought it was beautiful and felt lucky to have such a great view of it throughout the day. It looked perfect in walk-in and was much appreciated.

On a slightly different topic, thanks to the crew that marks out the city and decides where the roads are going to be... I always park by walk-in, and last year the traffic was about 3' from my tailgate - and I've got a little Ford Ranger. This year, we definitely had more room to work with. Again, much appreciated.

Now back to your regularly scheduled art rant...

Unfortunately Art was stuck in Pittsburg this year and sadly could not attend the event. He, however will make a concerted attempt at next year.

I agree, the playa did seem to be lacking in art this year in camparision to past years. Whats funny, is that I thought I read a couple of months back that this year was supposed to have to more registered art than in previous years. I hope and encourage more art in 2005!

I think it seemed like there was less art because there were very little large scale pieces on the playa. Most people I've talked to think that that has more to do with the lousy economy than anything else - people can't afford to make that massive projects that were common in the nineties and early aughts.

I do wish that the LLC would place more art in the inner playa and less out past the outer ring of streets. It's a fuckin long way out there, and until more art comes back, I'd rather have the inner playa more densely populated.

Well, I heard lots of rumors of why there was less art and who knows which were true.

But, my friend was told she was not allowed to put her art up this year because it was considered "slap art" or something to that effect. I don't know if anyone has ever seen her multi colored life size goddesses out on the playa, but they were considered artful enough to be put into the (I believe it was called) "drama in the desert" book and dvd.

I can think of at least two art installations that I almost killed myself on by riding my bike into. The installations were ugly by day, deadly by night. But that's my opinion. And maybe that's what the artist was going for. Hoping for a dead bloody mess of me and my twisted bike ontop of his/her tangled mess come sun up.

But I guess my point is, I don't know why her art is not worthy and certain other installations are worthy. But I guess that's the age old dilema with art, isn't it?

It's fucking art! No one gets to decide! Fucking art nazi! Fuck you in your stupid nazi art ass!

Um... but what if I don't want my art piece in the inner circle? What if I want it in the desert alone?

What if say I don't want to fill out forms for the borg and deal with placement and rules and regulations?

good questions. I will hopefuly have answers soon unless there is somebody that KNOWS the answers here.

I would think that anything goes in your camp. And, until I learn what the rules and regs are I would say PLACE IT if you want out in the deeep playa. Just make sure it is well marked at night so people CAN NOT hurt themselves.

Have you worked on any playa projects before, with say, theme camps or people that have the ok from the org or gumption to do so?

Here's something that came up in another thread that could help out.

Right, but didn't Burning Man have the largest attendance ever this year?

And aren't a lot of those projects funded by the Black Rock Arts Foundation? (at least the bigger ones?)

And weren't ticket prices the most expensive they've ever been this year?

Exactly! Large scale art was damn thin on the ground.

What am I paying for (beside porta-johns and infrastructure) if not to support large scale art installations.

And, I know for a fact, a lot of the best fire art was self-funded. Used on the damn promotional materials - but not subsidized in any way. Which just seems wrong.
