Re: One Item for BM a Day
Yesterday I got some metal mesh...though the openings are still too large...in my quest for the armature for my group costume vision. I've been buying up suitable fabric whenever/wherever I see it (on sale and such) and found a really cool one the other day, already pre-ruffled. If anyone has a source for something like window screening but stiff enough to hold it's shape, please let me know.

Could you use something like buckram, then spraypaint it silver?

It's kinda pricey, but I believe they sell stuff that fits that description for making armatures for clay sculpting at most art stores.EmilyD wrote:Yesterday I got some metal mesh...though the openings are still too large...in my quest for the armature for my group costume vision. McMaster Carr is also a good place to see whats out there - although they get top dollar. http://www.mcmaster.com/#screens/=h1r3ou

Re: One Item for BM a Day
I've been thinking for a while on how to make bunny ears.
Last Wednesday, thinking about that on my way to work,
I passed something in the road that my brain said 'Hey! that was bunny ears!!'
But I drove on, so as not to be too late to work.
(They were not there on my way home that day.)
(They were not there Thursday morning or evening,
and they were not there Friday morning.
I looked for them.)
Friday evening, there they were, same place, veritable bunny ears,
but grey and broken, having been run through the mill,
invisible to me since Wednesday morning.
Bunny Ears!!!
I washed them, and took out the pieces of broken headband,
and now, I have the basis for some real bunny ears of my very own!
Managed to get all the grey road grime out,
now they're all white and fluffy,
but the pink parts will have to be re-made.
No Prob!!!

Re: One Item for BM a Day
You could put a patterned pink fabric into the ears, Triken, like paisley, instead of regular pink.
Or an untraditional color, and make a matching cravat or bow tie or vest or something . . .

Emily, stucco mesh is cheap, and is a diamond grid, about 1/2" holes, flexible, it's also kind of sharp since the metal it's made of is thin, so would require care with working it. gloves certainly.

Got a new folding hammock delivered today.
Afternoon naps on the playa will once again be a delight. No more sleeping in camp chairs & waking up with a crick in the neck. No more sleeping inside the tent or trailer & waking up in a lake of sweat. From now on my husband & I will enjoy lovely breezy naps in hammocked bliss.
And right now one of the cats has buried himself inside the carry-bag for the hammock...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Went and did a bit of shopping today. No all I wanted but close.
Bought 2 -5 gallon collapse water jugs, moleskins, coco butter and 2 spray bottles for my feets. Still have a few more bits and bobbles i need but not to bad. Also saw those LED glow sticks in the camping department. I think im going to go pick up like 4 of them ( I have 2 allready) You never know.
Oh also went to walgreens to check out that fleece, Fucking bust! It is super thin and I dont think it would be all that warm. Still need to pick up two now that I think about it for the tent mesh though.

Thanks Elorrum...yeah the sharpness will be an issue...maybe a deal-breaker. I'm now thinking of styrofoam noodles (those pool things). I basically need to make a sort of hoopskirt thingie but bigger and wider. The big issue...droop. It's a crazy idea...therefore it just may work!Elorrum wrote:Emily, stucco mesh is cheap, and is a diamond grid, about 1/2" holes, flexible, it's also kind of sharp since the metal it's made of is thin, so would require care with working it. gloves certainly.

What about starching the crap out of a minnow seine? Cotton would take the starch better I'm thinking. If it needs even more hold than that, what about brushing it with PVA (elmer's or white) glue? It's a trick I've used on other things, I did some scale market stalls for D&D, the tops were basically open weave burlap and I just mixed up some PVA with some water and paint and it was stiff enough to hold our lead figures no problemo.EmilyD wrote:Thanks Elorrum...yeah the sharpness will be an issue...maybe a deal-breaker. And my one item today? I took balloons and brown rice and made poi weights by the pairs, 40g, 60g and 80g. Also found aluminum carabiners for a buck.

What about chicken wire/metal screen + clear-coated Papier-mâché/plaster? If you need extra spring support use whalebone... joking, use old fishing rods or bamboo.EmilyD wrote:Thanks Elorrum...yeah the sharpness will be an issue...maybe a deal-breaker. Re: One Item for BM a Day
Thanks for the tip Thorormr...I'm not sure what minnow seine is. I think I need to go with a non-water soluble armature in case of rain (it can happen!) Also, these will be needing to go out sideways from the body so anything that could crack (like a coating) wouldn't hold up. BBadger's idea may work (I was thinking earlier about tent poles) but...foam noodles maybe even better. It may be time to start experiments (in the wind down by the bay). I want this group costume to use the wind rather than fight it. I should really take this convo into the Costume and Craft thread. Oh...and thanks for previous suggestions (Buckrum and that sculpture stuff) AntiM and Drawingablank. Sorry if I didn't thank you previously.Thorormr wrote:What about starching the crap out of a minnow seine? Cotton would take the starch better I'm thinking. Here's the one we gotEmilyD wrote: You have a photo of the folding hammock? I wonder if it's the same as the ones we got, they were a DREAM!

My one item for today was I tore off some failed EL wire/white fur trim from a dress to make room for some LED lit monster fur trim that I will make this weekend. It's the ultimate in costume recycling! The EL wire will get fixed & sewn onto another outfit, the white fur will get washed & stored in the craft bin for the next great idea, and the dress gets a new life with new trim & new lights.

TWO THINGS! (finally, back in BM prep mode)
A new bike:

Bought it for $40 off someone that found it in a dumpster behind walmart. The rim needed to be bend straight again, but otherwise perfect. It's a folding bike that packs up small. I'm thinking of spray painting it dark indigo, then painting stars and nebulae on it.

Chasers or hangover stoppers. They help you not feel like shit from drinking to much.

Oh, I just drink tons of water after I'm at the point of totally wasted (example, alternate 1 glass water with 1 serving alcohol after I get sick), and get at least 1-2 full glasses of H2O down before I go to bed. Rarely am I hungover.tattoogoddess wrote:Chasers or hangover stoppers. They help you not feel like shit from drinking to much.
