Any Random Pizza Experiences to share?

Post by tundratommy » Thu Sep 09, 2004 9:45 pm

I will do a little write up my thoughts on Random Pizza Experience soon, but I thought I’d ask if anyone had any “Random Pizza Experiences” they’d care to share.

We started delivering pizzas midday Monday and finally ran out of everything around 4am on Sunday. All in all we made over 500 pizzas, 350 from the dough I brought and 150 from the torillas, pitas, and made-from-scratch-on-the-playa dough. Our 200 boxes traveled out and back on the playa exactly enough times.

I made about 10 pizza deliveries myself and had some wonderful experiences. On one Saturday afternoon delivery I road out onto the playa wonder who would call for the pizza and I felt a calling from the Temple. I road to the temple and was wandering around the back side when I saw David Best strolling towards me.

I stopped and asked, “excuse me, did you order an onion and bell pepper pizza?”

He looked at me for a second, glanced at the box and said “yes, I believe I did.” When he saw there was a real pizza inside, he grabbed a few slices and said “great concept. Send the rest to the boys…”

Another story is one I heard 2nd hand. A guy comes by, makes a pizza and decides to deliver it to the airport. He finds another guy and delivers the pizza. The guy then says, “hey, you wanna go up?” and they end up flying over the playa in the pilots plane. Somewhere over the playa, the pilot asks “you wanna drive?” Which of course he does. Deliver a pizza, get a free flight.

Wonderful.

Thanks to everyone who made Random Pizza Experience possible.

Maiden voyage of the "art car from hell" (not its real name) on the playa in the afternoon of Icantremember. Guy pedles up on a bike and hands us a pizza. Smiles all around. Thanks :D

I saw someone recieve a pizza in the white blow-up, plastic art structure thing out on the playa by the man.

"did someone on a bike order a pizza"

guy with a confused look- "what"

"did you order a pizza"

guy- "uhh.. yes!"

i'm glad I caught the random pizza experiment in action, even if I didn't get any of the pizza

I thought I was the only one who had a pizza delivered to me in the middle of the playa by a mirrage. Am I still special?

Pizza saves Cafe staff

Post by tisha2 » Fri Sep 10, 2004 3:14 pm

You say you ran out of supplies 4 am Sunday...what kind of miracle then is this:
Cafe staff on Sunday were seriously burnt-out, understaffed, and recovering from all the same "indulgences" as everyone else from Saturday night, and a crew of about 20 stepped up and started work at 7 in the fucking AM and kicked ass until 3 pm. As the volunteer coordinator I wanted to thank them appropriately and kept asking "what do you need?", besides booze & drugs, they wanted FOOD!! Hard to manifest a feast for 20 while stuck to a desk in the cafe...just then in walks pizza-guy!! It was freaking perfect! He waltzed on back to the lounge and looks on their faces...I know a least a few thought they were hallucinating.

It was fucking brilliant and much appreciated. Thank you!!

I woke up from an afternoon nap to find a Hot pizza sitting on the camp table, quite a nice way to get going for the evening.

I don't know this guy, but he's a friend of a friend. Check out the pizza bit halfway down his blog entry:

We're the Burning Drummers and one afternoon just as we were starting to think about lunch, up comes a guy and says, "Pizza delivery!" It was definitely an unexpected treat, and a cool experience. Here's to the random pizza crew!

I think it was Thursday about 11 a.m. and Death rides up (well, that's what he said his name was) and he's carrying this pizza box. He asked if anyone had ordered a pizza. I said no. He asked if I was sure, and opened the box to reveal a mouth watering (mushroom and green pepper, I think) made-on-the-playa pizza. We (me and a couple of neighbors) attacked it like lions.

Now, keep in mind that Sensei spent some of his childhood in Chicago, in the company of Italians (I was 12 before I found out I wasn't Italian - I was and still am crushed). Sensei knows pizza.

Also, Sensei was living in the outer reaches of the galaxy, way the fuck out on Sedna, next to walk-in.

The idea of a superb tasting (and superb looking) pizza being delivered out of the blue, by a complete stranger, to other strangers (way the hell out on Sedna) just blew us away. Surreal in the extreme. The pizza was still hot, for God's sake.

The Random Pizza Experience was fantastic and inspiring. Way to go, people.

I too was gifted with an amazing pizza experience. My first day home, I had just unloaded my art car (cosmic cab) and I met Steve (I think he was with the Galavant Crew). He leaned on my cab and accidently broke off my old english horn. He was much more devasted about this than I was...but that didnt stop me from yelling, "where's that fucking horn breaker Steve?" every time I passed his camp or would see him on the playa. I just love to make a man squirm. So 3 or 4 nights later I see this very sweet man stroll into my camp with 2 pizza boxes and a big ass grin. Well...it was love from that point on. The pizza was the best I have had, and it took the wind out of my cursing his name. The rest of the week when I went by his camp or saw him he got a big fat kiss. The power of pizza is unlimited.

It was Thursday or Friday night (blur) and my newbie sister went out to visit the neighbors while the rest of our camp fixed our dinner (hamburgers for the second night, but dammit the meat was going to be yucky real quick)

Just as the burgers were coming off the bbq - sissy rolls back into camp with a half eaten piece of pizza stating that she wasn't gonna eat no fricken playa burgers tonight.

I think that really impressed upon her what the community can come up with and how something as simple as fresh pizza is like gold on the playa, and she was all all smiles.
I am a bit tied up at the moment...but if you leave your name and number.....

pizza at costco

Post by rico thunder » Sat Sep 18, 2004 1:49 am

Damn it. I was just going to comment that, no, no pizzas made it to Costco. But then in the random blog link, indeed, a pizza did. That fella took the pizza I ordered. Crap!

a few years ago 2 of our generators took a shit. -(go figure)
without even asking anyone, a camp of punks across our block seemed to sense what was up and offered their generator for us to tap into.

at that point what they didn't know was i was just about ready to making pizzas in our center shade structure for our neighbors and camp mates.

we hooked them up 4 large pizzas that day and saw some beat down, tired, dusty, hungry ass people shine like diamonds. -(felt like i got a "get out of hell" card free that day.)...

great idea with the pies.

Random pizza experiences ...

Post by burning tent » Mon Sep 27, 2004 4:32 pm

So, like, I'm a senior in high school and delivering pizzas for Poppa Romano's ... those bastards at Popeye's didn't call until the very day I was loading up my car to leave for college ... I get to this one condo and the woman is just hopping mad that I'm soooooo late. It was my first night on the job and I was worried I was already letting Poppa down. The woman said she had just called the manager and was told she was to receive a free pizza. Who was I to argue? I handed over the pizza and apologized for being late.

She seemed happy enough. I was happy she was happy. Hopefully this was just some sort of a scheduling mistake and I would soon take my rightful place next to Poppa Romano ... as Pizza Prince.

However, as fate would have it, the joke was on me. That woman never called and spoke to the manager. Nobody had said she gets a free pizza. I wasn't supposed to give out free pizzas no matter. And I wasn't late and we weren't freak'n Domino's. It was just a nightmare all around.

They didn't charge me for the pizza but they made me promise I would not go back to the woman's condo and collect.
