Post BM tips please...
Hey there,
I'm going to Burning Man this year, can't friggin wait!!!! But not too sure what to do afterwards. I'm an Aussie and have 3 weeks in the States before I head off again. I'm hoping to catch some gigs and festivals while I'm there, but there doesn't seem to be much going on in September - maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. Can anyone point me in the right direction? And any super cool things (besides the usual stuff) I should do while I'm there?
Cheers,
Manda

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Hi Manda.
Since your subject line says BM Tips, but that's very, very broad (in the same way that "tips for surviving college" would be broad) I will link this forum:
Preparation
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=275
And recommend the links in my sig there, below . . . especially the survival guide. Survival = good.
But the meat of your text suggests you might be looking more for leads on festivals. Maybe if we know what states you plan to be in those of us who live in those states might have ideas . . . (i.e. West Coast region, California-only, some other state . . . or absolutely anywhere in the U.S.?)
I'm going to move this thread to the "Introduce Yourself" forum since people often give a little advice or suggestions in that forum before they encourage you to start browsing the site like a fiend.

All of the big festivals will be over for the year. I'd suggest hopping in your car and heading down Hwy 395, taking in the sights along the way. It is an amazing route. You can go to Yosemite, Devils Postpile, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, etc. I could go on and on. The camping and natural settings are unbelievable.

Feel free to PM me if you want some suggestions for the National Parks and such!
Eventually you'll end up down near Vegas and LA and I'm sure you can find some shows that are worthwhile with a little research.
Just my 2 cents. Enjoy your Trip.

I spent 3 weeks in the Reno Circus Circus one day. Ketamine would have been very soothing!

Whilst on US 395, shoot up Mt Whitney for the day...highest point in the lower 48. And like Burning Man, you'll need a ticket.

I'm inviting anyone to decompress after the burn with a roadtrip from SanFran to Seattle, with a long stop in Portland to see some shows. I'll be on a motorcycle, as I think that is the best way to get around...

You are unlikely to be able to get the gear you need to the playa on a motorcycle. You'll want to think through the logistics.

Re: Post BM tips please...
it is NOT easy DrewBandy....NOT AT ALL...
you have to carry ALOT OF SHIT.
not to mention MANY GALLONS OF WATER AND FOOD....
i had support, in that all of my water and food came with someone else.
also realize that YOUR BIKE WILL NEVER be the same again.....you will need to totally clean the carbs, needles and especially the air intakes and filters, not to mention lubing every fucking square inch of the bike after you leave.
the dust is abrasive AND caustic and will eat your ride.
good luck, if you attempt this, and be aware of the free range Cattle that roam the roads as well as their massive turds which will cause a bike to slide out...this is from experience....that shit scared the shit outta me around a turn...

Re: Post BM tips please...
Giving this a nudge over to Transportation, since that's a better fit for the post-burn road trip conversation.
The 'festival season' in the states winds down at the end of August/beginning of September, much like it does in Europe. But depending on the time you've got and the places you're interested in going there are still things probably going on. If you want to do some touring/siteseeing of national parks or monuments you'll have the advantage of off-season crowds and rates, but still nearly-summer weather. Best bet is to find a city you're interested in spending some time in, and then check out events in that city. The SF bay area has an electronic music fest around the end of September (called LovEvolution these days), as well as a leather/bdsm event (Folsom Street Fair), and I think there's even a ren faire somewhere too. You'd also likely see a number of post-burn parties and gatherings put on by a few different camps. If you're able to stay as late as October, there's also the Burning Man Decompression parties. Reno, Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, Seattle, and a number of other communities on the west coast have 'em. Good luck sorting out your itinerary.
