Makes me wish Oregon had cacti...
You explained the cactiferous transplantion process to me at the burn and it is a joy to see the pics!

Love the cactus transplant pics!

I boosted my laser cutter skills with a great workshop on rubber stamp making, so I can design and make my own stamps for the deli instead of just buying them online. The class also gave me some other ideas for projects with the laser (making some custom paint rollers), though I'm not sure whether that'll benefit our playa projects for 2012 specifically.

Playing art director, I'm really happy with where Pandorra's going with the sketches for the cityscape murals we'll have at the front of our shade structures. In the next couple weeks we'll get the canvas and knock out the outlines, then we'll have a painting party at a nearby park on an upcoming weekend. Next up I've got some nerdy computer maintenance to work on, the machine with a Windows partition that I use for CNC stuff needs some work. After that machine's hunky dory again, I'll start work on translating my deli counter design work and build a scale model or two (there are a couple different versions I really like).

A couple of my campmates have expressed interest in making some kind of 'brain beacon' (glowing brain floating above the camp at night). Anybody have any ideas or suggestions on how they could pull that off fairly easily (and safely)?

well, I got my new BBQ done ( I think).........I made if from odds and ends I had around the property here........the main part is an old water tank from a concrete truck..........other stuff is steel I had save from different things..........the tires are only for moving it, like a wheelbarrow. Once it's in place, the tires/axles come off so it can sit level.
I also need to "burn it out" with a hot fire or two, to get rid of paint and oils and such.

all folded up, ready to move:
Image

1/2" griddle, over secondary fire box/smoker:
Image

griddle lifted (hinged) for access to cooking surface, with removable opening for setting pots and pans of for cooking and direct fire contact, or adding wood lids removed for using griddle:
Image

inner grilling area, height adjustable over fire:
Image

extra work stations deployed, left side end (was standing in holder on back of BBQ) and right, in front of griddle:
Image

I hammered/forged a tool for moving grates and removing cooking surface cover plates:

thanks gang!
Fishy: part of the challenge, was to make it only from things I had, here.
I only paid for welding wire, gas, a grinding wheel, and electricity.
everything else there, was scrounged, from my "inventory"
so, well, if what I need is to "heavy" but it's "free"........in it goes.

solid? yeah, I think so.
beautiful? well "eye of the beholder" and all.
But, I'm sort of proud of making it from stuff others threw away, that I saw potential use in, and saved here.

Great grill, Yggy! Wonderfully hardcore industrial. :D I'll bet Motskyroonmatick would also admire that.

Really cool Ygmir!
Maybe you could help me on this Idea.
Basically Like this but on the Playa.
Has it been done?
Hazards? concerns?

I'm thinking Aluminum I have allot of it and It has a Relativity low melting point.
Crucibles would be ceramic, MAP Gas and O2 Torches in a covered pit.

very cool, knowmad! other than him not back filling hole.

seems the playa, would work fine for forming, and as he does there, you'd need to keep it moist, while carving. There might be some interesting chemical reactions, with aluminum being fairly reactive, as well as the salts and gypsum, etc in the playa. combined with heat and the steam that results.......could be very cool!
you'd want to make sure there is no standing water in the bottom of the holes.......

Is MAP gas cheaper than propane?
I'd think a propane/oxygen torch would melt aluminum......maybe even just straight propane? you could research flame heat........I'm happy to help, and or advise, though.

Here in Seattle we have The Lost and Foundry
I've worked with them on a few casting projects and they use Propane o2 as it is cheaper, but they use allot and it takes longer.
I'm told MAP Is a bit more Expensive burns a little hotter. But Transporting it?
Rodger; the no standing water in the leg holes.

Cool video, but I've got to imagine that there'd be something in the way of a scar or tainting of the playa. You may want to send an email to the ARTery or DPW to ask about digging/refilling pits for sandcasting on the playa, they could let you know what the issues would be so you can cover the bases.

How about, instead of digging up the playa. Build a pit, similar to how we build evap ponds, and haul in play sand.
Or use kiddie pools with play sand. It would hold in the moisture better, being contained.
