Please brainstorm with me.. :)

Postby Pippi » Mon Apr 23, 2012 9:31 pm

The camp I would have participated in isn't going to be making it to the playa, so I'm trying to figure out what the heck I'm going to bring/do/create for this years burn.

I need a little help with a couple of ideas, so I have come to the professionals..... :D

My first thought, is a sort of "Burners Missing In Action," type memorial wall, for all of us that are missing friends who weren't able to get tickets. I just keep thinking about how weird it will be without my family so others must be feeling similar and this could be kind of an interesting way to "honor," them for lack of a better word. I'm imagining it being somewhat like what people do at the temple but maybe that is too similar?? Maybe the temple will be used for this purpose this year, so do you think it would be pointless?

My other idea is a little project a friend and I did last year.... Her boyfriend was so sad that he couldn't make it for 2011 so we surprised him with photos of burners posing with a photo of him. He was all over the playa experiencing everything, the Man, temple, art cars, all of it! He was even kissed by a one of the cops! He absolutely loved it and said that it made him feel like he was sort of there in a weird way. It was also, by far, my favorite day on the playa.

How perfect would this be considering how many burners are going to miss the playa this year. If I did something like this though, I would like to do it for people I don't know. I think that would make it even more magical. But other than advertising this on eplaya Im not sure how I would get photos prior or if this could even be made into a type of camp with the few friends that I'm going with?

What do you guys think?

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.

Maybe ask those who aren't gonna make it to send a pic and then...

Make sure the wall is well braced; you know it gets windy. ;)
Consider whether it would be appropriate or inappropriate to mimic the Viet Nam wall.
It's certainly going to be on the mind of attending burners this year.

A wall might be a good idea, but it might just bring negative energy on to the playa.

As to the "Where in Black Rock is...______" photostory, I would highly reccomend not doing this. I'm only speaking from personal past experience. I missed 2010, and it' still way more painful than I can express. I literally did not go on Facebook for weeks after the event because seeing the pictures posted by my friends made me cry, every time. If I had seen pictures of my friends holding a picture of me at all the amazing spectacles and experiences I had missed, I probably would have died of sadness.

I think your heart is absolutely in the right place, and you are obviously a beautiful person. I'm only speaking for myself, but getting left behind is going to be extraordinarily difficult for any committed Burner. My suggestion might be to write a heart-felt note and send it to your friends before the Burn (not an email, but an actual card in the mail.) If you really want to do the pictures, I'd suggest breaking them out at your friend's next Burn, when they are once again back in the saddle.

I think it's lovely that you are going in to this year's Burn wanting to make your missed friends part of it. No easy answer here.

I'm with jcliff. Although I am saddened that everyone who wants to attend cannot, a "memorial" would make me even sadder. Nice to be thought of, but not so nice when it is a cool vacation and I didn't get to go....it might feel more like an "I'm here and you're not" taunt.

Besides, many of us are UP TO HERE with the ticket issues and would rather see anything else - in fact I would go out of my way to avoid such a wall.

All the more reason to do it! I love the idea! Perhaps a small monument that can be burned in the temple?

I like the wall idea.. any friends not making the burn this year would be touched that you thought of them out there.

Keep it positive. Throw a party in honor of those who are AWOT this year -- Absent WithOut Ticket.

I was unable to go last year, and would rather not have known what I missed.

I like this, Elliot. After all, it's not like the AWOT folks have died. A party in their honour where their playa friends share memories and trade news of those who are absent is a nice way to refresh some of those connections and memories without getting all maudlin.

My opinion -- forgive me, but this idea is absolutely pathetic. People drop out every year. Either do something that will make you happy and blow people's minds at the event or don't. Graveyards and memorials are for people who deserve it, not people who were too unlucky or too lame wrt getting a ticket, or who just dropped out.

Unless you're trying to be ironic. Could work as irony, given the extreme angst this year.

I like the idea of raising one for the people who couldn't make it regardless of the ticket situation. But the word "memorial" reverberates a solumn (?), meloncholy atmosphere. How about a curtain of flowing strips of silk or cotton, that will wave beautifully in the wind, and allow people to write their friends/family's name and a "cheers to you" sentiment, then have a get together and take a picture, and party like it's 2019!! LOL
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

To my mind, that phrase refers to people who have died.

People can send little effigies or dolls that look like themselves if they can't make it to the burn.
Then you drench them in EverClear, rub your boobs all over them and light them on fire.

A few years ago Camp Herring, who generally participate every other year, built a spectacularly complex and detailed scale model of their camp for display in Terminal Village (on the bar counter in Booby Bar) in an "off" year. They even had their scale model registered as a Theme Camp. :D
