Hi all,
I greet everyone from sunny Florida. I have received an email this week that MOI qualified for a low income ticket..
I have gone to the local burn, however this will be my first in the desert.
I am a seamstress and have oooodles of fabrics (and El wire) around to sew up! So let the costuming begin.
Here are my some of my questions? What is a must have costume for a first timer?
In some of the photos from previous burns, there are notes like "Tu-tu Tuesdays" and "White-out Wednedays" .
Is "color theme du jour" organized & posted somewhere event or is a "Theme campy event" or a campy-themey event. (had to do it).
Yes I am aware of the other items needed for survival, I am not a sparkle pony. I am a mature gypsy woman with an accordian!

Accordions are always welcome. Look at some of the other threads in this subforum, and see what interests you. But no particular dress style is mandatory. Not sarongs, not tutus, not utilikilts, not bellydancing outfits, not crinolines, not loinclothes, not shirtcocking, not chainmail, cross-dressing. Go for comfort, and in your case because it matters to you, fun. Have something for hot days and something for cold nights. And have fun.
(Ratty has a thousand ideas on how to make costumes. You should look at her threads--much good stuff there.)

Re: Let the costuming begin....
Just remember the handful of MOOPY stuff to avoid: feathers, sequins, beads, belly dancer coins. If you can't beat it against the wall, toss it in the dryer, or hang it out the window at 70 MPH, it shouldn't come to the playa.
I'm guilty of sequins, beautifully handstitched, but a bad example to those who would buy cheaply made crap.
But yeah, don't worry about "days" and themes. I don't like tutus, so I do muumuus.
Do as thou wilt, and do no MOOP.

BM is small in a way, and large! So finding highly specific theme costume events, getting to them at the announced time and them even happening then and there is iffy.
So you just want costumes you own and that put you in a ++ state of mind.
The more costumes the better. The more comfortable costume shoes you can afford to trash the better (within reason, Mz Imelda). The more thermal ranges mastered or mistressed with style the better. Accessories! Of course this means for air arrivers sending a shipping container across the world with your costumes...
The more people to share costumes with, collaborate with, help design-make with, donate afterwards, the better too.
(talk to someone you know who has been and knows about dust and washing)

*voice from the room* All right Fishy, that's enough. Back away from the internet. It's Saturday night and you're a bit out of hand. Just take a deep breath and go to your happy place....

Layers! Since the weather can be unpredictable, I've found it very handy to plan for layering. For each day (and or night) I have a basic outfit that I love that's perfect for good weather, a few underlayers of tights, leggins, bodysuits in case it's cold, warmer accessories of warm headgear, gloves, legwarmers for when evening turns to night; etc. And then I bring extra stuff for costume-whimsy or gifting...
