Re: Now this is how you beg for a ticket
One day this feller from Washington come by
And he spied us and he turned white as a sheet
And he dug and he burned
And he burned and he dug
And he killed all our cute little weeds
Then he drove away
We just smiled and waved
Sittin' there on that sack of seeds
I wish I had a sack of tickets.

Thanks, UD! I'd never seen the Great Dictator (I know, I know...) and the reference was thus lost on me. He does it well.
Also, that speech is beautiful. Kudos to Chaplin for writing and delivering it. Just went and read a plot summary of the movie for context -- I knew it was a parody about Hitler, but nothing else. It sounds like this speech takes the movie beyond a simple mockery of into actually offering something beautiful and positive as an alternative. Even today, that speech sounds downright... modern.

The Great Dictator is one of the greatest movies ever. Chaplin movies in general should be required viewing. He got it right at the very beginning of cinema and not much has surpassed him since.catinthefunnyhat wrote:Thanks, UD! Re: Now this is how you beg for a ticket
Really? I was giggling after about 30 seconds. I'm driving the boyfriend crazy walking around misquoting "there's even a regional in the Amazon..but they don't burn the Man... because it's a jungle... and it's wet..." Perfect deadpan-yet-crazy delivery. I would give him a free ticket if I had one.illy dilly wrote:Right!

(then again, I've seen the Great Dictator about 20 times...)

A high school teacher got me started on Chaplin, although I didn't see The Great Dictator until I was an adult. It's one of my favorite movies.

I didnt think it was funny or interesting. But, I am so jaded by the ticket cry and potential theater artists. When they mix, its a ham scene.
