Our monkey hut did real well last year (although the wind was pretty mild) except for 2 rebar which bent about 15 degrees at ground level. I'm thinking to upgrade all my huts rebar to a heavier size for this year, even if I have to cut it myself.

What size rebar was it, do you remember DAB?

Re: metal casting, doubt anything that fine could be done easily in the clayey silt of the playa, unless maybe you use casting sand for detailed parts like the seat grid. Playa soil would require a lot more patience forming the shapes, wetting, forming some more, letting it dry, healing the cracks and crumbles, and probably repeating the process a few times. Could work for shallow bas-relief medalions or somesuch, possibly.

As shown in the vid, doubt anyone would give you permission to create an instant burn scar. You'd have to have a good radius because of the risks involved. Easiest thing to get permission for would be casting in sand separated from the playa w/ sheet metal or a welding blanket.

Did you try googling anything, eg [ "burning man" aluminum casting ]? This guy has done work with Recycle Camp a number of times.

Not sure - it was whatever they had in 24" precut - probably 1/2 inch. Will definitely dig it out and measure it before I look for replacements.

Grade 60 rebar wouldn't bend, but you'd want to find where to get it, precut.

Grinder, cuttoff saw or hydraulic power cutter. Not a sawzall. Let them cut it at the yard, I'd say.

I usually have a p 3' bolt cutter if you need, no playa.

most lumber or masonry supply places, that sell 20' sticks, also have cutters/benders for use if you buy from them.

Well DAB I found 24 inch lengths of 3/8 inch rebar in several stores but passed it up in favor of the half-inch stuff, which I finally found at HomeDespot.

Need to be careful there too because I found 3/8 and 1/2 inch pieces mixed together in the bin.

They are definitely bigger than 3/8 because I used 3/8 for our tent pegs.

If you bring a cordless drill, you can use these.

The 3/8" fit through the average grommet perfectly.

I used them last weekend at Saguaro Man and it was sweeeeet just zipping them in and out of the ground without pounding or prying!

Windy all 4 days and nothing budged!!!!

See, this is why I don't recommend rebar, even though I have an FAQ page on it. People think throwing rebar at a problem will solve it, much like they think sprinkling vinegar on their cars or tents or feet will cure something.

well, just back from the Hof........first shutter is up, and the doors are in place (But not final):

header/hinge detail:

I had to make an arm to extend the bobcat fork reach, and at 600+ lbs, the doors tried to tip it forward:

I was up at Espressodude's place today doing some stenciling. Put unit numbering and ratings on the front and sides. He designed and made a Black Rock Army stencil which he sprayed on the doors and hood...

Cool car there FF. I have thought from time to time about painting up my car. Maybe not the commuter car, but I've got another one that really would be suited for a brighter existance. I just might have to take that leap!

And the Hof! So good to see you making additional progress Yg! I know you've been itching to get the doors and shutters in. Congratulations, they look great! Sometimes camera lenses have a bit of distortion, but if I'm seeing your angle hinges correctly, then my guess is that you made them that way to reduce friction and prevent them from rusting in place. Another clever design feature to be sure! Then again, I may not be interpreting what I'm seeing correctly. What I can tell for sure though, is that the Hof is an amazing building!

Hmmm.. well, now I have a second theory about the angle hinges. It's difficult to know for sure what is welded to what, and what isn't, but if the inner long rod is now welded to the angle hinge, then I would guess that it is angled so that you could maneuver the inner long rod up and align it over it's lower sleeve in the concrete base, then lowered down and subsequently fasten in place.

whew, I'm gonna call it a day before I end up with a third angle hinge theory, the one involving too much Kraken!

well, the inside is all solid, the bar is reinforcement for the 3" heavy channel iron that the other side nests in, to there is no place to put a bar for levering open.
I'm more referring to the angle the closed shutters create with the building walls, and how they come to a point, instead of closing flat.
