Crate Ends: attach two 1x3 boards to each 11.25x9.75, making sure sides are flush AND there is exactly .75" of overhang on either end.

attach sides. drill pilot holes before driving screws. Make sure screws are centered in bottom board, to avoid splitting.
Top and Bottom: attach bottom board, making sure all screws are centered and secure in bottom of side boards. Attach the 11.25" feet flush with ends of bottom board.

Attach top 1x3's to top board, so they would be near flush to insides of bottom 1x3's...see the fucking picture.

To secure the top, you can use either hinges and a latch...OR.. attach boards under the Top board, that fit flush inside of box.
These crates aren't lighter than a plastic bin, but they are burnable, sturdy and with the interlocking tops and bottoms, can be used as small tables or used to make tables.
