:D
Pictures from the Death Defying Figure 8 Pedal Car Races at Maker Faire. (Focusing, obviously, on my entry, Steamroller.) This was a new event at Maker Faire this year, hosted by the guys who have the Whiskeydrome and other fun bicycle stuff.

Image

And they’re off! There were something like 15 entries, and we ran in heats of a handful at the time – well, I counted nine in one extra-lively heat.

These snapshots show only a few of the wide variety of entries. Many cars were unfinished, but with the smashing success of the event, expect some serious pedal-cars next year.

Yes, there were crashes; resulting mostly in broken wheels. Steamroller did not have any such problem.

Most importantly…

…we looked darn good doing it.

The rest of Maker Faire was nice too. Tons of Burning Man art.

Great pics, Elliot! Sorry to have missed everyone, Pandorra and I ended up going on Sunday (our weekend plans shifted around a lot on us), and I was still a little wobbly and out of sorts from Saturday. I loved the art cars and PMV's, especially getting to see Fast Furniture's setup where they showed how they make the cupcakes and the mobile recliner. I don't think I've ever seen so many 3D printers before, either. We both came away with some fun ideas for projects.

Congratulations, Elliot!

From what I see your steamroller should rightly have been in a class of its own -- and must have instilled a goodly amount of awe and FEAR in the competition's hearts. I sure do wish I could have seen that race!!!!

It was a mad house, trilo. We could have been within 10 feet of each other and never known.
(except I was there on a different day...)

True, Fishy - it was bigger and had a lot more people than I expected (this was my first time).

Me too. It was my second, and 2006 was more sparsely populated.

It just came to me. I think as my mind turns to mush, more of those relations appear...

Was a zoo last year, plus it took a couple hours to deal with parking up at CSM and waiting with hundreds for the shuttle bus. Will take Caltrain if we find a reason to go back.

Glad you had fun, hope the churros didn't kill you.

Hey, I was a crowd volunteer for those car races, and now that i think of it I bet that was you in the falafel line, crypto. I particularly like the kid-friendliness of this event, really a cool scene. This young lady was killing it in the velodrome for example:

Also for you Utahns, there will be a Mini Maker Faire Oct 5, 2012 in Library Square downtown SLC. Check it here, and we're looking for participants!:

It could be. But I got garlic fries and a knish. I think there was falafel... I was wearing a bright yellow shirt--not that it would be visible from certain angles.
