Things I did really, really right this time...
-brought underwear, which is not something I normally use, but for some reason I brought lots. It came in handy when I discovered immediately upon arrival that I forgot the skirt I planned on wearing all week and everything else was too damn hot to wear in the daytime. Phew!
-went to the meet & greet, the only thing I actually did that I planned on doing and now I've met lots of you! Also, ate shrimp at the m & g...have been a veghead for about 12 years. It was good. Thank you!
-brought a futon to make a couch and that was a lovely hangout spot and got to meet lots of people hanging out on it.
-camped with lovely, lovely people from my town that I hardly knew and we all were one big happy family and looked after each other so well.
-stopped at the huge semi truck gas station outside of Reno and thankfully they had a big display of Red Bull which was the one thing I forgot to get and it powered me through the whole week.
I'm sure there's more but I have to go cook my lasagna now.

--Camped with ridiculously cool people who all shared in responsibilities and genuinely liked each other.
--Brought ridiculous amounts of food, water, booze, and party favors, so there was never anything to fight about amongst camp members.
--Fell in love (this is on my 'things I fuct up' list too. I can't decide which it is)
--Didn't try and plan anything with anyone. Just wandered around and had a blast.

things i did right
i wrote a things i fucked up list so here's the opposite
it was my first burn so i got my ass to the man
met lots of cool people
broke all of the rules i set for myself for the week ( eating white sugar, drinking during the day, doing drugs, and anonymous sex etc.)
learned about rebar
reaffirmed my desire to be an individual and live that way
prove to myself that i can make it in a crazy desert wind storm and a white out on the playa.
took every experience at face value
relearned we are all a web

things i did right as a virgin:
came with a veteran
ignored the veteran most of the time
didn't plan activities
brought too much water
brought rebar stakes for my tent
brought a gas mask
helped build a camp that wasn't my own
let myself have "alone time"
brought more than enough food
slept when i was tired
drank water when i wasn't thirsty
got front row for the burn (because everyone was considerate of the short people)

things I did right:
- I got lost every single day.
- I didn't make plans.
- I experienced playa love.
- I didn't take a bath, which made my pheremones extra pungent.
- I pissed clear, thanks to the water bitch.
- I liberally used sun screen.
- I took rides in the art cars.
- I didn't bring a bike, which allowed me to walk around more than usual, and eventually lost 10 lbs during the week.
- I didn't get swept up too early in the week, I was able to pace myself.
- I had some alone time.
- I didn't get run over by an art car.
- I didn't bother trying to sweep up all the playa dust from my tent.
- I drank enough to be happy, but not too much that I had to pass out on the playa.
- I never refused an invitation.
- I gave out more than I had received.

1) Aw, well, you know, we got there! And unharmed! And unarrested! And with most of our stuff!
2) We built, IMHO, a bitchin' first year attempt at a sizeable theme camp.
3) We built a dome, a nice dome, something I have dreamed about for years, and it worked!
4) The Morticians Closet clothing exchange ROCKED; we provided hundreds if not thousands of articles of playa wear (including male camel toes) to many, many burners.
5) The trampoline was a huge hit, used by hundreds of kids of all ages for a VERY wide variety of bouncy bouncy fun!
6) We provided shelter during the dust storms to dozens of whited out friends, including the Damned Fucking Texans from next door, who turned out to be damned fucking nice.
7) I learned to like the rave aspect of this year's event; not quite ready to stick a candy nipple in my mouth and zone out on blinkies, but damn if dancing the night away wasn't a hoot.
I took the opportunity to spend time and bond more closely with my nieces & nephew and gained even more respect for their tremendous talents and positive outlooks on life.
9) We minimized camp drama; no shouting, no hurt feelings until the very last day, and that seems to have been resolved.
10) I saw huge vast playa spaces that can hold my art for next year.
11) We provided assistance to some of the camps around us (what a great feeling that is, no?). And they were all great neighbors in return, from Mayor Joey of GLOM (keep after 'em, Mayor), to Spanky of Hair of the Dog (God, did some of that music suck, but I thank him sooo much for providing the venue and equipment and support for the performers, and drinks so I didn't mind the bad sets in between the good ones), to Michael of Bouncy Bouncy Camp, who build the coolest tower and let us climb on it, and grooved out some great tunes, to Animal Control, who, what else can I say, totally rocked (I just HAVE to dress to get caught next year! and your morning wake up sets were the BEST!), to the Damn Fucking Texans, who should get an award for most shade erected in the least amount of time, to our favorite new playa buddies, Skyshow Camp, whose creativity and ability expressed via their art on the playa and their ultracool dome were amazing (big HUGZ!).
12) And well, you know, we got our stuff back off the playa (near as we could) and we all got back home safe & sound, and we all had a pretty good time, and I think nearly everyone wants to do it again, and make it better, and what could be better than all that!

This year I had a friend sew me a monk's cloak made out of the kevlar/nomex material used in firefighting clothing. Not only did I have a very freaky/hip outfit to wear - we were the tribe of the chattering monks, so it was appropriate - but it also kept me very warm because it was lined with nomex as well, it zipped up all the way from the feet to the neck, and it had a giant hood. The hood was also key because I found that while on certain substances, dancing with a crowd was a little overwealming. So I'd pull down my hood and dance with myself when I needed some private time.
The best part of the outfit was it's fire protection. After the pagoda burned, I walked right up to the firefighters who were standing next to the fire. I introduced myself and chatted with them: 3 nice volunteers from the Austin Fire Dept. They were impressed but warned me not to hug any naked women or risk buring them with my metal zipper. We hung out next to the fire chatting until my cloak started smoking slightly.
On the night of the burn, I got to view the man go up from the back of one of the firefighting supply trucks. It was a great privelage. I don't know why they kept messing with me... taunting me with the glow sticks I had given them. Silly firefighters!
I had so much fun with my costume this year that I'm sure to make something even more bizzare for next year. I'm looking for about 10 yards of Southern Mills Kombat or Millenia fabric if anyone knows where to get it. I've found that Southern Mills isn't very supportive of the arts - something about not wanting to get sued when I try to actually fight a fire in my costume.
If it's not nomex or kevlar, I don't want it on my body! I won't touch anything that burns below 1300 degrees. It's been fun sharing:)

There are a number of things that I think I did right for my first burn, beginning with saying what the hell and deciding to trust someone from this forum who I'd never met.
He offered some space to transport some of our stuff, so we decided to caravan with him. Turned out he also made the same offer to someone else, so it became a 3 car caravan, all virgins. Long story short, we ended up forming what we came to call "Camp Serendipity" because of how well it worked out. Not only that, but we feel like we made a new friend. I genuinely think our experience would have been lessened without these people.
The shade structure that I had researched for ages, but never had the time to practice worked like a dream.
My fiance and I had intended to hook up with a bigger camp of experienced burners and spend a lot of time with old friends of mine, but once we got there, it just felt way more natural to break off and do our own thing most of the time. I'm really glad we did that as our agendas just didn't coincide with theirs.
I opened my mind to a lot of ideas I might not have considered before attending BM. Previously, I scoffed at the idea of having any type of awakening or life altering experience. Well, I don't feel a lot different, but I do feel like a more alive, if not better person.
I'm really glad I arrived on Monday. I think the early part of the week was my favorite (except for the burning sinuses, cracked skin under fingernails, etc)
On the 2nd night, when I decided to stop walking to the porta potties every time I woke up and started peeing into jugs to be emptied later was one of the best decisions I made all week. Damn small bladders!
Getting my honey a pee funnel on day 3 was an even better decision.
Watching the critical tits parade was awesome. I'm really glad I did that.
Had great goggles and a lot of extra dust masks, glow sticks for sharing. These all came in very handy.
Brought a back up pair of walking shoes in case the 1st pair didn't make it. I was using these by day 3 or 4 and much preferred them over the originals.
Most importantly, I decided before entering the gate that my #1 priority for the entire week was to enjoy myself. I'm really glad I had this mindset.

Someone on this forum suggested pre-cooked meals, frozem, double ziplocked and then boiled in hot water before serving. I have never ate so well and MOOP free on the playa, thank you so much. We brought turkey meatballs and marinara sauce roasted for hours. We also brought chicken fettucine alfredo with sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and mushrooms, oh my god that was good. Also, turykey manwich with roasted red peppers and chiles, in Pitas.
Lots of sleep, first for me too and so damn good... waking up at sunrise and going dancing just as good as staying up all night dancing. (though not as good as watching the sunrise whilst dancing).
Seriously planning to bring less packaging left us with ONE garbage bag full of stuff to take home and half of it was a ripped up tarp from the ride up. (covering decorated bikes). I was especially proud of this.
Spending time at Astral Lounge even though I was dead tired. Those people were so wonderfully inviting and friendly.
Avoiding jumping on the band wagon with my dearest old friends and what they were up to.... doing your own thing can be an invaluable part of the BM experience.
Bringing mass ziplocks of various sizes for everything from disposed shower wetwipes to dirty and clean socks&underwear. Again thanks to the eplaya advice.

- - Brought a surfeit of water, went home with ten gallons,
- Decorated my bike up,
- Merged my shade structure with my neighbour's; result, one ass-kickin', very cool and effective shade structure (and we're doin' it again next year),
- Dustproof cover for the bed,
- Medicine pouches graced with incense cones 'n peppermint candies given out as gifts,
- Made it a point to go out adventuring at least once a day,
- Kept a journal,
- Took oil baths instead of water baths (zero instance of Playa foot); recipe for those who'd like to do likewise: 70% olive oil, 20% coconut oil, 8% Vitamin E capsules, melted, 2% orange oil,
- And my pride and joy: Caught a young couple hanging out by the Omphalos who'd gone out Playa jaunting WITHOUT THEIR WATER!!! Kicked their bliss-ninny asses, totally ignored their excuses that camp was too far and sent them back home to get their water. "And don't let me see you again without a gallon jug of it in tow!!!"

--Setup my tent inside one of those Costco carports. Great shade, and it dampened the noise from heavy winds at night. Plus with the large carpet I brought it made a great living/dining room.
--Got to the Playa on Monday, even though it meant driving back to Reno on Wed to pick up my wife at the airport. I got 2 whole days of Burning Man without having any preestablished connections. And, as an added bonus, I had the pleasure of taking 2 hitchikers back to Reno, both of whom had family emergencies they had to attend to.
--Did what I wanted, when I wanted to do it. I didn't worry about my campmates or my wife and they didn't worry about me. When things came together for us all it was fun, when they didn't it was fun.
--Stayed in Reno for a night before and after the burn. Allowed me to get their fresh. A hot tub suite at the El Dorado was just the comedown I needed after a week on the playa. Damn That felt good.
--Brought Vinigar and Bag Balm. Yeah..
--Brought extra water with me on an evening outing. My tripping friends forgot theirs (duh!) Lucky them that I was thinking.
--Got Flogged
--Left my inhibitions at home. I still can't seem to find the damn things, must have misplaced them really well.

1. Staple gunned all my clothing baggies to the wall of my trailer, no more searching for sox and what not.
2. Finally made it to center camp to buy a beverage. My first year of BM was 1996, about friggin time!
3. Somehow ended up in the fashon show with my husband, hmmm?
4. Sent mail home, thanks to the postal worker who came to my camp.
5. Didn't break any bones the week before BM, wooo hooo!
6. Due to #5 was finally able to jump on a trampoline.
7. Took care of myself on the playa so the post playa adjustment wasn't quite so painful this time.

Built my own man and burned it since I couldn't go to BRC. A fine-art photographer friend gave me a pinhole camera print he did of my burn. He matted and framed it and everything. I asked why. He said, 'so you'll do it again.'

hung with the locals
drank lots, sunscreened lots, footcared lots.
ate good food (until i started to stop eating)
decided not to care about the things that people say are important (ie man burn, etc)
gave intangibles.
met stellar eplayans
surlier than thou
Lets see
-What did we do right?
-Went fucking crazy on the playa
-Danced till I almost passed out.
-Wasnt in the least bit shy and therefore made plenty of new freinds and kissed the most beautiful girls I have ever seen in my whole entire life!!!!!!
(There are no girls like burner girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Give me an Amen!!!!
-Slept well when I needed to. ( not that often thanks to the good drugs)
-realized that Im still an artist and it doesnt matter if I think my work is crap or not.
Jesus fucking Christ I love BRC. Obsessed and I love it. Fuck everyone if they think I rant about it to often.

things i did right...
well, the #1 thing i did right was get a shitty bike at Target in SF before coming. i fly out from NY so this has been my sixth burn since '98 and only the first one where i had a bike. what a fuckin' difference! and a bay area friend offered to keep it for me until next year. woo hoo!
#2 is i didn't do any of the good psychedelics i brought out to the playa. this is arguably either something i did right or something i did wrong, but basically i'd broken my ankle back in may and it still felt a bit stiff and i didn't want to be all high on acid or shrooms or e and twist it dancing or worse, so i opted to stay mostly sober most of the week. or, well, drank bloody marys which are easier to keep in check than psychedelics where with any luck at all you are having a transcendment moment before you know it...
much as people differ on the use of them, the playa is by far the best trippers playground on the planet.
what else did i do right? i didn't skip burning man, which i was considering the week before the event.
what else? i spent a week in SF after the burn before coming back to NY.
and i had some fun costumes for the burn this year. and bought the official "rocker dude" shade hat that all the burners seem to have. now that i have one, i don't see how i could have made it six burns without one. those straw hats with the wide brims are absolutely fantastic.

oh yeah, and i spent an afternoon (drinking bloody marys) helping a friend actualize her art project and encouraged her when she was becoming frustrated with it. that was very gratifying since when all was said and done, the result was a project she was pleased with, and we saw others experience and enjoy.
YAY!!!
