iburn?
Does anyone know if iburn will be coming back this year? I downloaded iburn 2011 and it seems like it would be a ton of help out on the playa.

What's iburn? Sounds interesting.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Fuck iburn. I'm rocking my Google glasses the whole time just to stay uber connected the whole time I'm there. I'm a Facebook checking in machine while I'm there.

I kid.
1. Turn off phone
2. Store in safe place
3. Do not touch or think about again until Exodus
Do what you want though. Personally, those glorious moments for 7 days out of 365 that I get to completely immerse myself in an alternate reality while journeying through space and time are my precious moments when I finally.. get to leave the rest of the world behind. Turning on or paying any attention to my phone would instantly snap me out of where I want to be.
..but that's just me. YMMV

Also, the playa can be hard on electronics. Keeping devices not in used in a ziplock is one way people make sure that those devises don't end up needing to be replaced soon after the rainy season starts.

You can also use a iPod/Phone/Droid/Tricorder/Sonic-Screwdriver without taking it out of a ziplock bag to cut down further on dust exposure. The touch screen, speaker, and microphone still works through the plastic.theCryptofishist wrote:Also, the playa can be hard on electronics. To answer the OP's question...
I think I read a few months back, can't remember if it was a post here, JRS, or somewhere else, that the creators of the app were looking for help with it for this year.
So, it's probably safe to say that it's being worked on.

for what it's worth, TG:
don't over think this.
even stuff on a map, or on a schedule, or with coordinates, on on the menu...is subject to change. Often, things are not where they are supposed to be, and or when they are supposed to be, and or whom they are supposed be.
Go to TTITD..
Be at TTITD (present)
Drink it all in, even the kool-aid.
Sure, try to know times and locations of things, people, and events...........but don't bet on it.
you have chosen, and been chosen by , a great camp, and a great group of people.........that, is to whom I'd turn, if you wanted to know stuff.
As a collective they are a genius, perverted and unnatural, sure, but all there are among the brightest and best in BRC.

Yggy is a wise, wise man.
Yeah, I don't get to the where what when guide until Wednesday or Friday or Sunday, although I do use the map. I do take notes about major meetings (mod summit, eplaya meet n greet, burn night)... and then that's that. The phones are off and stored away because they are anchors, and totally irrelevant.
iburn seems like a good idea out here.... but what you find when you aren't chasing a schedule it is far more interesting out there.

Re: iburn?
+100 to what ygmir said. I almost feel bad for the people who spend half their week with their heads buried in their WWW guides and directory apps. Having had years with long lists of stuff that had to be seen and years where most things were left to chance and random discovery, I'd gladly take the latter. Other than a short list of where friends may be camping (so I can drop by if I'm in their neighborhood), I prefer not to pack guides, lists, and helper apps. Defaultia has more than enough of that, it's nice to spend a little time going without.

There's no way to see and experience everything at Burning Man, not even close. Not even ten percent going balls to the wall. What you experience is what is best. Heck, last year, my best moments were under my very own shade structure as friends dropped in.

Re: iburn?
Monday morning or before, I try to take a quick look in "One-Time Events - Monday" and Tuesday, etc, and circle a couple of things per day, and have a read. I think I have made it to a whole TWO listed events over the years: 1) The Hunter S. Thompson Happy Hour, and 2) a belly-dancing class that was followed by a burlesque class. They weren't easy to find, but they were fun! Everything other adventure has been a happy accident. The WWW remains a favorite souvenir, however, because it has such boundless creativity. And I like to carry it around, because you never know . . .
Beginning last year, I printed out my own multi-page document showing the whereabouts of various camps, people and events. That was pretty useful so I'll do it again, although I didn't get to everything, not by half.
I don't like to touch my phone at the event . . . although last year, the temptation to find a hotspot and whack just one piece of spam from the playa . . . was strong.

I loathe my phone in default, I wouldn't have it on if someone paid me. I make one or two calls that week to make sure everything's cool back at home. But I do it when I want and I don't turn it back on til Reno

Re: iburn?
My first year I had a list of Things To Do, I made none of them but stumbled onto or got randomly invited to a bunch of amazing things. I haven't even looked at the WWW since '05, and absolutely the only two things I ever have on my to-do list are the ePlaya M&G Thursday night, and Bootie BRC at Fandango right after that. I've made the M&G the last 2 years, Bootie BRC every year I've been since it started (I camp with them, kind of hard to miss the party).
Yggy is right, and I would only add that if you want to get the app to play with on your way to BRC it would probably be great. Just put it down & live in the moment when you get there. Let your plans go down in flames, learn to live on PlayaTime!

Re: iburn?
I have never, ever, in six years, managed to make a single event I found in the WWW guide.
Like Eric, I have attended events my camp was hosting, but that is it.
I just pick left or right when I leave my camp and end up where I should be.

Re: iburn?
Last year I printed out a schedule of DJs I wanted to watch. And the greeters also gave me a map. I don't think I touched either.
On playa, you might start walking toward a particular camp and never make it
Way too many distractions.
So yeah, fuck iBurn! And fuck phones! My phone was deeply buried in a pile of mess in a car for the whole time. How liberating!!!

Well I will always have my phone on my out there. Im not taking my camera with as it is to big and afraid I will loose it and kind heavy to carry around. So im using my iphone to take pics. Also if I meet someone I want to keep in contact with I can put there info in right away.

You probably know this, but the dust and heat will be hard on your phone.tattoogoddess wrote:Well I will always have my phone on my out there. Having some way of dust-proofing your phone is important. I use one of those Pelican cases for my phone.

I was thinking of using a sandwich bag. I still have to try a few options. Also keeping it in my camelbak near the bladder cause of the heat. Doing the same with my Flip.
