Rave Camps & Lonely 'Tard DJ's !!!

Post by nocturnal_steve » Fri Sep 17, 2004 2:45 pm

Rant...Rant...Rant......

1.Monday....I set up camp on Venus and 9:00

2.Can't sleep for two nights.

3 Wed......Relizeing that I took my chances by camping so close to the Esplanade I break down my camp and set up on Pluto and 9:00

4. Thursday.....Small rave type camp sets up near me. Boompa Boompa Boompa till 3 AM

5. I wake up, go into their tent . At first I think the place is empty. Finally I see one guy at the control board and one guy listening.

6. I ask them to turn it down. The guy says "this isn't my camp", I am not sure how to work this thing. So I reach across the board and start twisting dials. Finally the so called "music" stops. Starts up about an hour later.

7. The next morning, about 9 AM I enter the tent again. I see a single gal. With a big grin on my face I ask...hey are you guys going to be doing that music all week !?! This gal, thinking I enjoyed the shit says "Yeah".

8. I tell her that Pluto is more or less a residential area, could they keep it down after 1 AM or so ? She says "I'm not responsible....this isn't my camp, I'm just a guest here". Well, I ask WHO is responsible ? "They are all sleeping" she replies. WELL I say, MAYBE NOW IS A PERFECT TIME FOR ME TO WAKE THEIR ASS's UP !. Felt liked coming back with a CD of the Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, or Hendrix's Purple Haze .... now Rave Heads...thats REAL music not mindless electronic crap that my three year old could create on his toy Hohner Organ !

I felt myself spinning out of control, so wisely backed out. Made an inquiry to the Rangers who were very sympathetic, said they would talk to the camp, but officially I have to make a complaint with Ranger central, and after two or three complaints and non compliance they could do something....like pull the plug. Dam....BM would have been over . JUST LIKE IN THE REAL WORLD THE WHEELS OF JUSTICE TURN SLOWLY, if at all ! It seems like sneaking in with wire cutters in the early morn, when the Ravers are all crashed out would be a good proactive solution.

OK I know this is a angry rant.....but this 8x Burner can turn his head and choose not to be subjected to whatever freaks me out ( and with the exception of pierced cocks very little does). But I can't make my self go deaf ! And I need my 4 hour or so sleep every night. I saw more than one rave camp OFF THE ESPLANADE spinning boompa boompa boompa to audiences of four or five. I was aghast when one night I saw a lonely dude blasting tunes to an audience of ZERO ! How POWERFUL it must make one feel to stand behind a soundboard, plunk in a CD and send out a zillion watts of shit music WEATHER ANYONE WANTS TO HEAR IT OR NOT !

OK apologies to the more considerate ones out their who enjoy electro-trance-rave whatever you call it.

And to anyone else.... care to become proactive.....next year join Wire Cutter Camp, where 1.on the first warning sneak into all the rave camps and in the AM hours and blast Roy Orbinson, Jefferson Airplane, Joplin and the like on thier own systems and after that 2. We will make raids and clip the wires /trash the soundboards of all obnoxious rave camps.
Stay hydrated my friend.

Not to point out the obvious, but I'll bet this exactly the same thing your parents said about the Who and Hendrix and I'll bet their parents said the same thing about Elvis, and I'll bet their parents, said the same thing about big band music.

Just a thought.

You want to cut my wires? Now you got trouble.

anything else is just a rant about personal taste

OTOH 9 and pluto should be pretty quiet.

I understand your anger but your uneducated comments on a music I dj and produce really leave me with little sympathy for you. One reccommendation "Earplugs".

Learn a little more history about dance music then maybe come back and try and rant a bit less ignorant.

I love Joplin, Roy Orbison, and Hendrix but I also love my dance music. I understand you were out in the sticks but with your attitude the way i percieve it on these boards I would crank up the volume more. Isn't the mantra of your generation "If its to loud you are to old?" it is a broad generalization but broad generalizations are what you present above.

Sorry to jump to my own rant but it just angers me to see such ignorance and lack of respect of a culture. That you have based on a few run ins with people who perpetrate the same culture that I live. Hopefully next year your experience is much better and maybe we could have a beer and I would be happy to give you some history and techniques of production.

SLEEP.

OK Sandwichman, Stu and all . My rant overloaded and not meant to offend anyone's taste in music. I wonder how anyone who set up out in the stix , partied all night with whatever flavor of sound, and wants to sleep afterwards would feel about being kept up all morning and into the next day. So I'll apologise and eat it that aspect. I'll have that beer and double you back a round of Jack and coca cola.

Awwwwww....not getting enough sleep on the Playa...thats terrible !! Atleast you can get a good nights sleep for the other 51 weeks outta the year.

You'd think after 8 years on the Playa, you'd figure out how to get a good few hours sleep. Earplugs usually work great and the aren't the expensive my friend.

I bet next year you'll find a better camping spot...AWAY from the beats of the Playa. I might even recommend getting an rv...you can't hear shit coming from the outside and your get better sleep.

OR you can ALWAYS do your our sound camp playing whatever you choose, for how ever long you want to...just an idea. Hell, a good sound camp should only run you around $15,000. Viva Hendrix

p.s. You should really use spellcheck.

As I am a Dj and producer of "techno-trance-rave"music,you might be suprised that I agree with Nocturnal to some extent. However,I have more of a problem with people playing music after sunrise, when there are far fewer people wanting to dance.Even us partiers in the large sound zones need to sleep. Also,as a Dj,I find it very fustrating to play for myself,or one person. Its actually kinda depressing(to watch also).I wish people would only use amplified sound when there are (willing) people to hear it.

Of course, theres not much that can be done really, nor should there be.Burningman would such if there was a sound curfue(?).I almost turned off some camps generator this year,as it seemed like there was NOBODY there with the sound system blairing at 8:00 in the morning. Then I realized that I was at Burningman, and I needed to adapt, and that meant dealing with it.Soon I passed out from exaustion and anger, and felt a little better when I woke up.That said,Im pretty sure Ill be having two campsites next year-one with most of my friends,in the sound zone, and the other in walk-in camping for sleeping

Wait, on second thought, Steve is right. Steve, could you please post a list of "rules" oh you know, what we should play, when we should play it. How loud, where to be, what to wear, how to act.
Steve, 2005 is going to be the best year yeat if only every one follows your guidelines and taste.
Next year theme, "Steves Way"
The radical free expression thing is getting way to played out anyhow.

You take your chances when you choose a camp spot unless you camp in the Quiet Camp zone (yes, there really is one). Still, I sympathize with anyone who has to endure the monotonous, (seemingly) unchanging thoompa thoompa thoompa of that techno/rave shit. It's music made by computers for computers. There's such a sameness to it. Sadly, it's overrunning Burning Man and a place that celebrates diversity offers less and less diversity in the musical content each year. I VERY sorely missed funk camp and the funkmobile last year. Down-home, organic, soulful, and very danceable, even without the drugs...

8 time burner should know that 9:00 and anything probably wont be quiet.

pluto and 9:00 is 1 block away from pluto and 10:00 which is designated LSSA... thats usually a pretty loud neighborhood... thumpa thumpa usually travels at least a block....

we camped there for a couple of years (10:00). we made it loud when we did. And there were usually systems behind us as well. sometimes there were lots of people, sometimes none.

If you were at 8 and pluto i could see a beef, otherwise its like complaining that you got wet while standing on a beach.

and lastly, i agree, more diversity would be nice. and more sabbath. lots more sabbath.

New Day's Eve played a bit of funk, and some great shitty 80's music, so that's where I spent at least a couple hours every night. Techno's not my thing (unless it's Jungle, and that's in short supply), but it's fun to dance to when I'm moderately less than sober.

Oh, and back on the subject, I'd just like to say, this is why I sleep during the day. Three hours from 6am to 9am, and I'm good to go for the next round of thumping music till 5 in the morning.

Earlpugs do help, but they don't keep out the deep thunmping bass lines of any music.

If you want a funk mobile, build one. If you want a camp that plays only your music bring your own sound system. If you want peace and quiet you may be picking the wrong vacation. I've heard B&Bs are quiet.
