I imagine that when people walk around staring at their phones, they tend to stumble into the incomprehensible, or at least the random and unmapped: Picket lines, open manholes, trip wires...

So, in a perverse kinda way, playa-planning apps might actually be the catalyst for some spontaneity. Imagine looking up from your phone to find that you're in the midst of a mob of dancing Darth Vaders, or tripping on a wire and making an unexpected soft landing in Giant Pink Sponge Camp!

Just a FYI, Wasn't one of the things that is said over and over- dont tell people how to do their burn? or you are doing it wrong? Don't you think a few of you are doing just that? Seriously. If I want to take my phone to take pics and use the app. Why is it a big deal to YOU. I am not using it for conection of people "in the outside world"Going back to wiccan principles.... harm none. I am not harming anyone by using this app on my iphone. Hell burning man invented the damn things. So please stop telling me I am doing it wrong. If this is how I want to do My burn... let me and who ever else.

Reminds me of the time when my friends and I drove past a "Taco Time" while we were busy looking for "Taco time" using Yelp app :D

I use my phone to take pictures on the playa too. I've also made a call or two, and I check my email almost daily on my iPad. I have a couple of BM apps installed, but for whatever reason, I never used them on the playa. I think I find the printed directory they give you at the gate easier to use.

I like to plan what I want to see. Sometimes plans change, but having a plan and being flexible about it is a good thing. IMHO YMMV

From my observations, I would posit that the two most basic and defining activities of Burning Man culture are telling people how to burn and becoming indignant about being told how to burn.

People get fussy about cell phone calls, especially in public. Larry Harvey even said:
"You can't f**k in the road, you can't sh*t in the road, and you can't use your cell phone in the road," he said with blatant disgust. "It's a private function. Do it in your tent!"
http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10348913-245.html

all the while, participants are setting up a homebrew cellphone tower...

Years ago, a cellphone was generally just a phone. You called people on it. Now it is a magical do-everything device that makes Star Trek engineering look quaint. What does this mean for Burning Man?

See - now I am getting sucked into a BM ethos discussion, like a moth to a flame - and I have only even been once. Can you imagine what I will be like in five years? They will have to lock me in a crate at 11:30 and trash fence.

I love reading your replies and imagining the second picture from the left saying it with a finger in the air.

Sooooooooooooo reminds me of an old philosophy teacher I had years ago. Same haircut, same expression, same finger in the air..

Pumpkins gone wild?

Yeah, what Catitfh said, and mev, and the others..... burn how you like, but post on eplaya about anything and we'll all chime in. Repeatedly. It isn't telling you a damn thing you don't want to hear, so much as hearing what we want to say to each other. Once you set a thread into motion, you get no ownership over it, only over your reactions and interactions to it.

Oooh, look, shiny.

And now we will get his comment about censorship... The dances we do on eplaya.
