High Flyin' Harness from the Mutaytor's show...hook me up!

ok people, who has the low down on that freakin harness setup the fire spinnin chicks had at the Mutaytor's show afterburn...gotta get on one of those things, immediately. what is the deal? anyone in the bay area got that rig set up, giving classes...please tell me yes.

i want to learn how to do the fire spinning thing in the biggest way. help a girl out...c'mon, somebody's gotta know somebody...kick down people!

Oh and how do you like Sebastopol? I am thinking about relocating to near San Francisco and Sebastoplo seems like it might be a good segue from rural Idaho, I also kinda liked Petaluma last time I was through there. Any advice on studio workspace in those parts?

Sebastopol is really great. It is true, as my friend said on Friday night, that there is a kind of war between the rednecks and the hippies, it is an area in conflict in some ways, but I find it works nicely for me. it is close enough to my work that I'm not terribly late...it is close enough to the coast, and other wild things, that I feel it's worth the drive...and it feels rural to me, I have owls and woodpeckers, trees and barns and fields, but there are still people around, community to be had...and the classes at the Sebastopol Community Center are great, African, Samba, Capoeira, all kinds of fun stuff to do and see. And it is close enough to the city so that I can go do stuff and come back that same day if I want...

Petaluma is also nice, if you get in the right area it can feel very rural, and is even closer to SF if that matters to you...Petaluma is a darn cute town. not quite as "green" as Sebastopol, but very cool. has a very entertaining young punker scene vis a vis the Phoenix, arguably a better downtown area...easy access to the coast, Pt Reyes and all that niceness.

Studio workspace is pretty easy to find, especially in West County...lots of little spaces to rent behind people's places, or out on property. lots of artist types around fighting for the killer renovated water tower...but they are out there. rents are hideous, it really is comparable to NYC, sadly, but you get a lovely place for the money. often you must deal with propane if you are out on property, or do a woodstove, but it's all good, and it works, it's just wierd at first if you're not used to it.

Wow! Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I should be visiting some friends in SF toward the end of oct. -planning to be there with some camp mates for Halloween so I should be able to experience Sebastopol first hand. Until then it's craigslist, on which I've seen some pretty nice little rentals in the eight hundred range, which comming from my hoity-toity ski town, seems pretty reasonable. Good luck with the fire spinning -I have to admit, a friend of mine spins and she makes it look like a lot olank fun, enough to make me want to make some practice poi.

yep, craigslist is the way to go. also had some great connections from the yahoo group "WaccoBB" which is a west county thang.

i fully intend to spin some fire, of course with my luck i will set my hair on fire, or knock myself out or something, but heck, why not! it just looks so fun...and besides, you get to wear the killer outfits!

Glad you dug our show-I had a great time, and though I'm sad it was our last Playa show, I honsetly can't wait to spend my 10th year of burns having fun and seeing other people's art and takin some time off!! We also are really looking forward to supporting the regional burns which are more in spirit to the old days I remember.

I can ask our main rigger about the harness, but I'd need to know which one you were asking about. We use several kinds of spreader bars, ankle harnesses and zip lines. If you have a specific question for one of our fire team, feel free to email me and I'll forward it to them.

If you want to learn fire, make sure you have the time to devote to it, and first and foremost, learn to do it safely.

http://www.homeofpoi.com also has some free instruction. The video clips are great. In less than 2 weeks, I've learned a number of basic techniques from that website.

Many of the regional groups also have safe instruction workshops. Ours down in Silicon Valley does but that is a bit much of a drive for you.

thanks for the info...i will check that out.

hope to hook up with some fire arts folks at sf decom...actually talked to a lady whose boyfriend does it in my area, so i am hoping to connect with him and get some starter tips. i think really i just need to do it. but someone around to put me out if i torch might be a good plan too!

Capoeira? Are there instructors in this area? do you know? The closest I could find to petaluma is in fairfax. Long drive but really cool peeps. Oh, and also, lets play. Doin anything the weekend of the 2nd? Im takin some burner freinds from San Fran to Safari West where I work.

I took a poi workshop on the weekend- it was great! I loved it. I'm getting a set so I can do it all the time.
regyna if you can find a good instructor, I'd totally recommend taking some classes. We learned a lot of safety and learned so many different spins, I learned so much faster than if I'd just been playing around on my own.

capoiera class at Sebastopol Community Center on Wednesday nights, 7:30 to 9pm, hottie boi Rio teaches it, and they are awesome. we do samba on the same night in a different room, so this week we are going to have a brazil party and get the two classes together for some food and fun...anyways, definitely check him out, looks like a great class.
