For Thrifting, Salvage, Dumpster Diving, Free Boxes, Garage/Yard/"Tag" Sales, Craigslist, Free Cycle and all the other ways we acquire neat stuff. (Maybe should have gone to Tips & Tricks but I'm assuming there will be thread drift.)

Just last week I was this close to starting a thread called "rare and lost". Mostly of things I gasp and grab in thift/old book stores because you know... I was... looking for this!!
Or the things that you cant seem to find anymore.

For years, I have been hunting a copy of the book "Winged Tales" by Vladislav Petrovich. So much of my childhood is associated with it. I can no longer find the book in stores.
If you find it anywhere or have a dusted copy, I will happily take it from your hands. That book is neat stuff. I WANT.
In my world there's only legible and more legible.

Bin diving is the original name for this, and sounds better to me.

A plus to not promote a corporate brand name.

A reverse NoCostCo?

We're going to DI later, but there is a sad lack of cheap thrift stores here. Their pricers are guys who don't know what things cost in dollar shops and on clearance racks. I saw a huge sofa painting, the kind which is actually a print on cardboard, for $75 at a yard sale. Seriously? Probably ended up in the dump when they could have gotten a few bucks for it had they not been greedy. I blame reality TV.

The first rule of a garage sale is that you have to undercut the thrift stores.

Yesterday I picked up 4 Corning Decor cereal bowls, milk glass of course, in pristine condition. Now I can ditch the stoneware, never use the plates and the bowls have an annoying flat rim. Found two small milk glass mixing bowls in a handy size (also Corning Decor), and a peach FireKing lusterware mug for a buck each. Someone had hidden the mug out in the seasonal/patio area. Hehe. Larry found an enamelware mug, and two soup plates with the Navy anchor on them. The soup plates are perfect for stuff like stirfry over rice and stews. Can we tell I like milk glass?

We did pass up a yellow and white lusterware LAMPSHADE!!! It could be a hanging piece, or a floorlamp shade, we weren't sure. $8 and pristine. But I have no place or use for it, so we passed it by. Also passed up a couple milk glass custard cups and handled soup bowls. I can only use/display/hoard so many things.

I used to dumpster dive at the Nabisco plant in north Portland. Crackers, cookies, and such in perfectly sealed and dented boxes, YUMMAH!
Also used to hit the dumpster at the Yoshida's plant. We'd haul out gallon jugs of teriyaki sauce that was newly expired. Used it to brine salmon for smoking and for making fuckloads of BBQ chicken, bouefs, oink, and wild game.
Teriyaki bear is A-OK...

Diving at sporting goods stores for returned defective stuff is awesome as well.
Arts & crafts store dumpsters provide an insane array of supplies.
Safety supply stores yield stocks of goods for killer first aid kits.

Dumpster diving is illegal?(in California?, ya gotta be joking!)

Okay, maybe it's frowned upon by the companies. Maybe they lock up the dumpsters for fear of being sued.

We wouldn't want to encourage trespassing. No, we wouldn't.

Definitely illegal in Utah. Mostly a liability thing. But hey, we did not score panty tables and VS torsos behind the mall. No, we did not.

Find out what day they have the "large item" trash pickup in your city, or cities near you. If you live near a college, end of the year, the apts. have lots of furniture scores, that kids just leave behind.

If you love yard sales, every year during the first week of August you can check out the world's longest yard sale. It runs from Michigan to Alabama. I've only been in the Bama-Georgia section and it's yard sale after yard sale for as long as you want to drive. I'm making a list of things to look for that I want for burning man.

They got rid of that in Frisco -- people would put an insane amount of shit along the curbs, and the scroungers would just spread it around further. Now they have the RMJ system.

maybe in Rochester, but in places with a functioning economy they use these odd things called "dry-erz" and don't set their clothes outside.

Live is strange and scary in those places.

I've scored a nice microwave that was being tossed because someone cut the cord off at the end. A real easy fix. Oh and the turntable was missing. I did score an EZ-Up 12'x14' canopy from Kmart for 99.00! It was the last one there. I'll put my tent under it and envelope it with tarps to keep the wind and dust out! Yay!

Score! New tires for my new to me prius. $416. Sold the old tires to a buddy for $50 each. End result-- He get near new tires for his car that make his wife happy for 240 and I get new tires for my car with way less rolling resistance for 216. Oh yeah. Killed 2 birds with one stone for about 1/2 price. :P Now where is that fuel economy thread?
