Not sure if this is a scam or not
Not sure if this is a scam or not
Put a post on CL today, got a reply from some guy who is saying he can get up to 6 tickets at $260/ea for me. Say's he's getting the tickets Friday. I mean, $260 is bottom tier tickets, so great, but almost feels iffy. Have the tickets been mailed out yet? Is there a part on the website that you can plug the ticket #'s into and get a verification? Anyone have a good quality photo of a ticket so I can see what it should look like?

No the tickets have not mailed, and no Burning Man is not providing ticket verification services. This post has more info regarding scammers & scalpers.
Re: Not sure if this is a scam or not
Thanks trilobyte, read the thread, was just checking out basic info like if they shipped. Since they haven't, I'll ignore him further.

If you believe it to be a scam, you need to contact law enforcement before sending anything to Burning Man (info's in the post I linked to).

This one stinks a lot, many reasons to believe it is a scam.

Re: Not sure if this is a scam or not
There are 4 listings for BM2012 tickets on the eBay UK site at the moment that appear to be from a scalper.
All are being sold by: [user name removed] Who we have determined to be NAME REMOVED, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom and he is associated with NAME REMOVED. In one of the listings he is claiming to have 'Hard Paper Tickets'. UK Burners have emailed him and asked questions about Tiers & Will Call and, although he presents himself as a burner who has unfortunately had to sell his tickets, he has no idea what we are talking about! He also claims to be selling them at face value but has them for 'Auction' only and not 'Buy it now'.
Beware

edit: Publishing personal information is strictly forbidden, scalper or not. If you think you have information that should be passed on, please pass it on to partiserv (at) burningman (dot) com. -Eric, Mod

Tickets have not gone out as of yet. I would personally be suspicious of anybody selling tickets like that. There are so many trusting people who send money and hope for the best.
Paranoia of potential scammers is a good rule of thumb! There are professional opportunists who are ready to rip people off.

Re: Not sure if this is a scam or not
Anyone international claiming to have hard tickets for sale (even after they've gone out) is lying, unless a friend shipped them to them. Overseas tickets are Will Call only, period.

Yup, no hard tickets yet as of today, and certainly not in the UK . . . Burning Man tickets are not shipped beyond the US or Canada. A private US or Canadian buyer could FedEx them wherever, but they would have to have them in hand, and no one does.

I find it very strange that when groups of burners and individual burners all over the world are exercising vigilance and using Facebook to alert others of scams and scalpers and working with eBay and other auction sites to have listings removed that the forum closest to BMORG should censor information provided to help burners avoid disappointment and financial loss.
There may be a general rule that personal details are not contained in posts but one would hope that a little common sense would be applied when enforcing this. Holding back this information from the burner community it tantamount to a 'Scalpers Charter'. When the actual paper tickets are in circulation there is likely that we will see a substantial increase in scams and scalper activity and I would hope that BMORG and ePlaya see it as their duty to take every measure practicable to ensure that the community is protected.
With respect to the advise to use partiserv, it has been suggested in another thread that due to the ticket mayhem and high volume of enquiries that partiserv are not even verifying ANY tickets or responding to ticket questions this year.
