Camera Poll
Ok, vote to make it known, otherwise what more can you talk about that has not been said already?

Re: Camera Poll
You left out the option of: photography only of people you know. None of this "asking permission" crap because that obviously is not working.

It's what you make it.

Only taking pictures of people you know??? For the love of all that is holy and sacred, do you really view this as a viable option??? (And I ask this in all seriousness).
It really isn't as cut and dried as you make it out to be (I read your other thread too, but HAD to post once I saw that you suggested it here, too). First of all, as a newbie this year, the only people I knew for a while were the people I came with. I SEE THEM ALL THE TIME. I don't care about taking pictures of THEM!! I want to take pictures of the people that are new and beautiful to me. Must I meet them all first, under this rule? And where does one draw the line at on 'knowing' someone? Does a simple introduction suffice ("Hi, I'm Guinivere." "Hi, I'm [insert playa name here]" then, *click*) or is there a time committment minimum? How 'bout if I see the most beautiful image of two 'strangers' asleep on the playa. Do I wake them to meet them? What about large shots of the playa? No more panoramas, too? And what about art (the form of expression, not the guy named Art)?? Do I have to KNOW the installations, too? And then, the clincher: what about PEOPLE WHO ARE ART??
I'm sorry to get sarcastic, but sheesh! It seems so utterly ridiculous to fathom how 'only taking photos of people you know' could possibly be a logical solution.
Personally, I don't give a goodgoddam if people take pictures of me. In fact, the people I hung out with usually got more peeved about it than I did (asking "did he ask you for permission?? If he didn't, I need to go have a talk with him..." etc.). You want to take a picture of me nude on the playa? Great. You feel the need to ask? That's cool. But, ultimately, I CHOSE to be nude on the playa, with the full understanding that people have cameras, and WILL use them. (I'm also more than fully aware that some of those pictures may be used during the year to help some poor lonely dude or dudette get off. Great. Doesn't hurt me one bit. In fact, I hope they DO get used that way! The less sexual tension in this country, the better!)
I'm presenting an extreme point of view, I know. But I've been watching this topic for a while now, and I'm just never sure whether to laugh or cry about it. I am completely respectful of the view that we should feel free to do at BRC what we want, without worrying about people being assholes and distributing it all over the internet. But, at the same time, I totally respect the wish to have photos to look at throughout the year... to get costuming ideas from, to remember the new people that were met, to capture that ONE EXQUISITE beauty that you never did get the chance to meet, but who blew you away, all the same.
If I'm doing something that I don't want people to take photos of, then I should be resposible and do it in the privacy of my tent or rv or car or some other private place. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, it's fair game. Haul out the cameras. Take what you like. And, for bonus points, tell me that you got some great pics and get my email address, then tell me you'll send me copies, and the do so. I wanna see, too!
The Great Camera Debate gets me hot under the collar.
I'd love to see us all act like the mature and responsible people we are capable of being.

This was the first year that I took only a handful of pictures. I have come to a conclusion that any picture taken at Burning Man, simply can not capture any remote feeling that arises when experiencing everything on a first hand basis. Burning Man, to me, is truly a magical place to experience on the whole, a snapshot simply does no justice to what was actually going on.
However, I do believe in limiting the amount of rules, policies, etc that exist in our city.

I shot about 22 rolls of film this year and have some amazing pictures. I tried to be respectable as possible when taking pictures of other people and everything went great. My only gripe was it seemed like I was doing something wrong at times when taking pictures. I would get dirty looks just because I had a camera around my neck.
Oh yes, No I was not one of those creepy guys with the huge telephoto lenses shooting titty.

Do you have them posted anywhere? Like most virgin (or even veteran) burners, I was having too much fun to even remember to take mine out. I'd love to see your pics...
Thanks, and have a great day!

Well said.depros wrote:...any picture taken at Burning Man, simply can not capture any remote feeling that arises when experiencing everything on a first hand basis....
I agree with limiting the rules and policies, one of the great reasons I enjoy the event myself is the sense of freedom from social influences that otherwise limits ourselves with 'unspoken' rules of behaviour. However, I do believe in limiting the amount of rules, policies, etc that exist in our city.
But the issue I face is how to do this while keeping that sense of freedome for others to enjoy also.
Thanks for voting.

I appreciate the respectful approach people have when taking pictures. When you got the dirty looks, were these from people you were taking pics of?midgetsonparade wrote:I tried to be respectable as possible when taking pictures of other people and everything went great. .. I am guessing you voted for open and free shooting? Are you a professional photographer?

i have to tell you, i was stunned by the way people would go out of their way to ask my permission before taking my picture. even when i was up on our dome topless doing yoga people on the esplanade would wait to get my attention to gesture was it ok...which it was. this was from very far away. they could have easily taken my picture and gone on their merry way without me ever knowing about it, and surely some did, but overall people were very respectful about that, men, women, across the board.
when i wasn't topless people would still ask me before snapping. overall i thought it was very nice, and i felt comfortable with the photographers. to me, that is their art. they deserve to be able to practice it as long as they are not encroaching upon others rights to be camera shy. what would be really cool is if i could get copies!!!

Since there seems to be quite a few negative experiences with photographers, this was a nice thing to read.regynalonglank wrote:...overall i thought it was very nice, and i felt comfortable with the photographers. to me, that is their art. they deserve to be able to practice it as long as they are not encroaching upon others rights to be camera shy. what would be really cool is if i could get copies!!!
