Re: Score!
I thought I had a major score from Freecycle recently - a sewing machine and cabinet. I was giddy with excitement as I brought it home and set it up. I didn't have thread handy to test with, but everything seemed to move along fine when I powered it on, feed it some scrap fabric, and pressed the "go" pedal.
Well, I just got a call from the shop where I took the sewing machine for a tune-up: the repairman estimated over $100 in work just to get it up to snuff. I told him to go ahead and recycle it instead.
Lesson learned: sometimes things are thrown away for a reason. My search for a sewing machine begins anew...

Re: Score!
That I only want it working, not perfect, is definitely true.
But my experience with sewing machines is very limited already. Also, just getting a user's manual online is $10 - no free PDFs for this particular model. A repair guide might not be available at all. He specifically said there were myriad problems - the bobbin winder and the zig-zag mechanism among them.
I considered telling the guy to go for it, repair the machine. Then I'd know I have a solid, hard-working sewing machine. But I guess thrift miserliness got the better of me.

Try forum searches first.
Other than major mechanical failure, timing would be the biggest issue, I would expect.
Figuring out what is an issue is usually most of the work.
It's not always hard, especially if someone can give advice.

There will be other sewing machines. If it had been mine, I might have opened it up myself. I can't put things back together, but I enjoy taking them appart.

Re: Score!
Another tip for scoring stuff: sometimes it pays to ask around. I mentioned to a friend that the front panel of my cell had cracked entirely and, while it still made and received calls, nothing on the display could be read. I couldn't change settings or use my contacts list. She had an old phone of the same network lying around and gave it to me, saving me from having to buy myself a new phone.
All I had to do was ask!

University of Michigan has a store specifically to sell the left overs from the school year. Other U's may also have similar stores.Bob wrote:Probably a good time now to cruise the sidewalks in university towns for castoffs from kids moving back to mom's basement.

Oo, you're right, they do! My alma mater has this. If you Google "University of ________ surplus", that will probably work for many a major university.Sail Man wrote:University of Michigan has a store specifically to sell the left overs from the school year. Here, the best place to get cast-offs from university students are specifically in the alleys of Greek Row.

I looked up the Navy soup plates on eay. Holy crap, those ARE collectible. Meh, we're still going to use them.
I found a working Barbie electric guitar, the kind with beats and tempos and songs. I know precisely why it was sent to the thrift shop. Hehehe.

Ultracool.
Build a factory making OUT OF ORDER signs.
Got a pair of canadian Plateau Camber speakers, 3.5ti.
Quite impressive for such small speakers.
Pioneer stereo receiver for $5, with a maddeningly erratic speaker connection.
They don't bring a lot anyway, but this one is probably old enough to be decent.
WARNING, made after a certain date most amps have zero value, utter garbage.
Can't find specs, but about 60 watts, seems decent.
My good one is 1992. By 1995 they offered nothing at all.
Seriously, don't pay anything for the bad ones.
Saw an ad awhile back.
Thought it must be a joke or trashed equipment.
Good car equipment, just older.
He just wanted it to go to someone that knew what it was.
Lot of money for me, but a gift for what it was.
Kef Kar speakers, still considered the best ever made by some, and out of production, and ads factory stuff.

Very nice, Fishy. Nifty and keen also come to mind.
This weekend I scored upholstery fabric on bolts at a yard sale, and an album for my art adoption cards. The inexpensive little ones I used for previous years just aren't being sold anymore.

Re: Score!
Picked up the 2003 version of my dSLR from CraigsList for $50. It's only 6.3 megapixels and it's incredibly slow but I'm 100% familiar with all the controls and it accepts all of my other camera's memory cards and lenses (not batteries though, sadly). Now I can take photos at the burn with a camera that's both familiar and somewhat powerful and it won't be the end of the world when it gets dusty.

Re: Score!
All thanks to Elliot, or blame, I just got a Terrybass boat and a Mantra jet drag boat.
The Mantra is built for a 468ci or bigger, but missing drivetrain, otherwise pretty solid, with factory trailer.
Beautiful lines.
Early V-hull, all hand laid fibreglass.
Sorta like this one.

We used to be on the race circuit here.
I thought it must be something special the longer I looked at it, then found it has a mirrored engine bay.
Most of them have engine all the way to the front seat.
Should I mutant it?
