RE Utilikilts:
DM (heh):
You'd be surprised. I wear my Utilikilt quite regularly. Out around town, to work, et cetera. I get some funny looks, but I also get a lot of supportive comments (especially when I'm with the Missus: "I guess we know who wears the pants in this family! A Hnyuk, hnyuk, hnyuk." Yes, we've HEARD THAT ONE!). Be prepared to tell about every tenth person you meet the website, though.
Oh, Incidentally, I live in UT. So if I haven't been lynched, you're probably safe.

“We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”
Ok, time for Sensei to brag to the world ('cause you know you would if you were in Sensei's bamboo sandals):
Sensei had dinner last night with Lydia and Rian. Just the three of us. Sensei picked the place, Pasta Bella; a cozy Italian place in Ballard (?), and it was a fantastic meal, thank you. As it was just after sunset when we were seated, Sensei brought out the glowsticks - a green, blue and purple on a necklace for each of us. We looked divine and were the envy of all the other diners. They were also quite useful in reading the menus and checking out Rian's photos. Appetizers included focasia bread, calamari and antipasto. We ordered a carafe of the house wine, on Rian's advice, which may be why Sensei can't remember what Lydia and Rian had for an entree. I do remember excellent choices were made all around. Sensei had the crab and spinach pasta. Outstanding.
On a side note: You wouldn't frickin' believe some of the gossip; truthfully, all of your ears should have been burning.
I hate to rub all your noses in it, but I can't help myself.
P.S. Lydia will be living in our fair city shortly; no more of those 2 hour commutes. God help us all.

there really wasn't any, except about Sensei's love life.
but the glowsticks were lovely.
when i got back to the apartment i nearly burned down (sans car, i'd hoped to pick it from across town after dinner but was too sossed) some punks complimented me (coulda been sarcastic) on it. i slurred something about a raver dinner and they gave me odd looks. i think they felt sorry for me.
sensei, btw, can't handle his alcohol. my lightweight buck and 15 frame can kick his at the bar anyday.
he just *sniffs* his vino. very strange.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a lie of enormous magnitude. Or a lame joke. Hard to tell with Rian, sometimes. Sensei's love life covered about 10 seconds and led to an embarrassing lull in conversation. Concerning the gossip, I won't go into too many details except to say all your names came up. There are the e-playans I've met, the e-playans Rian has met, and finally, the e-playans that Lydia has met. Put together, we covered a hell of a lot of you.Lyin' Rian wrote:...there really wasn't any, except about Sensei's love life.
When your playa-name is Sensei, you refer to yourself in the third person. That's in the rules.stuart wrote:stuart finds it odd when folks refer to themselves in the third person. stuart asks 'what gives'?

1600 miles? Piece of cake! What's the matter with ya? Probably took you about a day and a half, right?DangerMouse wrote:Or if perhaps I was in better command of english... My apologies DangerMouse... I should have kept reading to see that you live in Iowa. Iowa is a time warp. It feels like it should be a tiny state, and yet it seems to never end. Feels bigger than Nebraska at times. I think we stopped at least 3 times in that state on our way home. Gasping for air and asking ourselves "Will this state ever end?"Icepack wrote:1600 miles? And to post ON-TOPiC-- I met Chai Guy. His chai was cold and yummy, just like he said it would be.

Add a few hundred more to my trip, and it took a four and a half day because I ended up being stranded in Grand Island Nebraska getting my transmission rebuilt.Icepack wrote:My apologies DangerMouse... Nothing like a stay in hell to cool your burn.
It does diminish my sympathy for the bay area folks bitching about how prohibitive the ticket prices are when I think about the Thousands the trip cost me.

Lousy accent
In order to do the gift of Dougeldutch's kilt up a treat, I tortured many of you at the M&G with an overdone brogue. That and the scotch made for some great conversation crashing. Still, getting you in a headlock and butting in with constant "ello-ello-ello-ello" was exhilerating... at least for me.
Cheers to you and thanks for the warm welcome.

I came home after the dinner and checked out the map on E-vite. Then I noticed, hey, you were like a two minute walk away. I went 'harrumph', too. I wouldn't have hesitated to get you and the hubby in on this. Won't be the last time we do this kind of thing, (Ok, maybe with Rian it is), but next time, your presence will be demanded.RebA! wrote:and I'm all of a 2 minute walk from that place. harrumph. ugh! Stuck in Grand Island. Poor you! We left Winnemucca, NV at around 11am or noon Tuesday and got back to Massachusetts late Thursday night/early Friday morning.Zulegoona wrote:Add a few hundred more to my trip, and it took a four and a half day because I ended up being stranded in Grand Island Nebraska getting my transmission rebuilt.Icepack wrote:My apologies DangerMouse... Going out, it was 2950 miles from home to the gate of Burning Man.
And yes, thousands of dollars we spent too. We used a rental vehicle to avoid getting stuck in Grand Island with a blown transmission, and that added over $1000 to our trip right there.
Met some guys in Winnemucca who felt they had a long ride home going to Colorado... sorry guys. Our vehicle had Connecticut plates on it, and they shut up fast.

Well I live in the Des Moines area so it only takes me 2 hours to get out of Iowa in either direction. Thankfully I-80 is mostly free of Hog Lot Stench (Unlike I-35...)Icepack wrote:Icepack wrote:DangerMouse wrote:
Nebraska kills me. It really, really kills me. I get to about Kearney or Grand Island and I'm hallucinating.
It takes about 20-24 hours total drive time depending on # of pit stops. The trick is getting enough sleep the night before you leave... We lost about 3 hours of drive-time due to fatigue.

Re: Sheesh
Oh you definitely had the longer drive... I do not envy you that. However our drive starts in a boring place and continues on through another boring place. The 65 MPH speed limit in Iowa doesn't help either.Icepack wrote:Met some guys in Winnemucca who felt they had a long ride home going to Colorado... sorry guys. We didn't spot any burners until Cabella's in Sidney. One van at the Walmart there. Then nothing until late in the evening inside Wyoming.

Cabella's in Sidney is one reason why we drive instead of fly!DangerMouse wrote:Oh you definitely had the longer drive... I do not envy you that. We left Mass. Thursday afternoon/early evening, and got to a hotel next to Cabela's by late Friday night. Made it to Winnemucca about 24 hours later. So Sidney is a nice 1/2 way point for us, sort of.
I was a little surprised on the way home to still see Burner traffic in Utah. On the way out, I don't think we saw any Burners until we got into Nevada somewhere. In Winnemucca we did see a guy who lives about 20 miles from us (or less?). We knew where to look though, so it wasn't a total surprise.
I agree, the 65 mph does suck. It's what we have at home too. SO going out it's kind of nice to suddenly get the higher speeds as you get closer. And coming home the trip just drags and drags as you get slower, and slower, and then more traffic, etc... sucks.
Still, it was fun to see elk, coyotes, wild horses, and deer in Wyoming.

that sounds awesome! broad daylight when we crossed it, and not nearly as impressive. I do like the solar-powered rest rooms though (in Wyoming).Zulegoona wrote:I came across that ridge toped by all the windmills in Wyoming back lit by red predawn light. Really cool.
