Woohoo - a shipment of shade hardware arrived today. All present and accounted for, and being separated (as well as tagged) by structure and then packed into bins for the playa.

FU sun!

Post by lemur » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:14 pm

ordered some shade for my little tent/campsite

lots of money for just a tarp.. but it seems to have much better construction than a cheapo 'blue tarp' ..plus it will pack down smaller ..and wont weigh much... 3.1 pounds for the entire 'structure' including guy lines and playa friendly stakes

Image

with 12 reinforced guy points im guessing this tarp should stay where its put a bit better than the home depot specials.... so long as the poles dont buckle (theres always 2x4's around to deal with that!) and i dont make it into a sail..

Image

now the problem is how it will be guyed and which of the endless variations should be used to best give the tent some cover with some space in front for sitting around ... while making sure it doesnt blow away

Image

hooray for projects

Hooray for projects, indeed. 8)

I took my car in for service today, told the manager I was taking it 6500 miles to Burning Man and back, and got every thing checked/changed/refilled/rotated/balanced/replaced as indicated, gosh. Three hours. Totally worth it.

You guys are getting serious.

Trilo, those photos are really neat! Sure makes tent hardware beautiful, and I guess you have the sort of cat that must "test" any new cat size surface. I'm curious what brand of hub (I"m assuming) motors you went with for your trikes.

I haven't done much lately. Looking forward to the weekend, and getting a certain pirate "radio" finished. I found a bluetooth receiver I might add to my trike system... or some other upcoming project.

@ lazerfox - yeah we are. I've been doing business with the guy for years as I've designed and built structures with former camps or changed and expanded designs for my own camp.

@lemur - cool design, but from the picture that looks more like ripstop or tent material (as opposed to a canvas/poly tarp). Probably no UV protection (utility tarps wouldn't have it either), but makes up for it in the super light weight and packing small departments. Cool!

@MDF - woohoo for getting the venicle service knocked out. We still have to do that, as well as probably (well definitely) replace the front windshield. It developed a small crack near the corner, those things tend to get worse as time goes by. Fingers crossed that when we take it in for the checkup they don't encounter any weird mechanical problems.

@SquirrelHead - congrats on the bike!

@Elorrum - tents are toys, my structures are things of strength and beauty! Tent! schment! As for the motors, they're a custom made conversion kit we're getting from the worksman (oldest bike maker in the US, they're the company that designed and built our trikes). We worked with them directly from the start last year, they've been a great company to work with.

We have one workman trike and one sun and we are looking at the electric assist idea too.

We are so busy I cannot even post everything that is getting done. Erected the Costco carport, working on designs for decorating it.

My daughter, that for some reason could not live without feathers, made her own and they are going onto everything she thinks they need to be on:-)

Working on so many costumes and clothing options that my head is spinning and I don't even know how many we have now for ourselves and of course gifting.

Ordered hardware for shade shelter and have set plans on what we will build.

Started the work on the MV, building the shape of the surfboard.

Met 3 of the people that want to join our camp and they are great:-)

Sorting out the tents loaned to people at Sasquatch music fest so they are all organized and stowed away for the burn.

And the list goes on and on and on:-)

its similar stuff to one of the thicker rainflys youd get on a decent 3-4 season tent..not the thinner ripstop nylon tents themselves are usually made of.. this one, and most all of these shelter tarps, are poly UV protected fabric with teflon/polyurethane coating and taped seems for water protection..it is basically just like the rainfly of the tent that ive been using the past 6 years and just like what most of these backpacking tarps are made of nowadays..from cheapest to the most high end.. for a lot of people these are used instead of tents in all of the same conditions one would use a tent and they all seem to hold up as well as my tent has.

i wouldnt throw a huge stack of logs on one or cover the bed of a loaded pickup truck with one.. but with the experience ive had with the same materials it seems well suited to shelter that can withstand wind/sun/rain... of course the true test will be if it can stand 2 weeks on the playa.. but considering that my tent hasnt been ripped to shreds yet and its made to the same specs.. im thinkin it will be ok!

It should totally be okay - once it's up and secured the air should just flow around it. Bonus points for the UV protection, anything I've ever used that's had anything meaningful was considerably heavier.

A very small thing, but important not really: I redecorated my whiskey flask!

I'd been given it by a friend some years ago, after having gone on and on about how I wanted one for department meetings/events. Of course, I was never ballsy enough to use it. It had one of those retro-1950s-housewife-pic-with-a-sassy-caption images on it... which, well, those are fun, but they're not really my style not that I have a style, mind you. I pulled it out of the cupboard today and discovered that the image was just a big decal which could be peeled off... and left all kinds of still-sticky glue behind. With some scraps of velvet and ribbon I had lying around, plus a bit of hot glue, I turned it into this:

Worked on some wayward art for AntiM and put in some more time on my seemingly never ending utility belt project.

ordered a new parasol/umbrella for walking around with. Last year a wayward breeze turned mine inside out  Also ordered some white string and orange string lights for camp. And thinking of ordering an Uberhood, which is an umbrella which attaches to your bike. The umbrella is long in the back so it shades your back.
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

The flasks look/sound great. Pandorra's got a fancy steampunk one we got from an Etsy seller whose work she admires, mine's unashamedly low-tech plastic. But it has a reasonable capacity and I can't break it, as I've somehow managed to do with all previous flask.

In addition to the lemoncello I started last week, I decided I wanted to serve up some lemonade a few times throughout the week. I found a lemonade recipe I liked, with a few adjustments it'll be perfect for my plans for the playa. In the coming weeks I'll get and juice gobs of lemons (let me know if your previous offer still stands, EmilyD :) ) and make/freeze/vac-seal batches of a concentrate mix.

I also scored a bunch of great looking meyer lemons at the farmer's market today. I need to go pick up some more supplies, then hope to start a batch of meyer lemoncello tomorrow.

I just discovered space bags. I put in a comforter, blanket, sheets and a pillow, sealed it and sucked the air out with a vacuum. This thing shrunk down to the thickness of a tuna sandwich. Holy crap! I am going to shrink my entire luggage heading to the playa this year. If you see me, everything will be wrinkled and have that slept in look.
