Lets stop with this myth that the newbies have all the tickets.I know some here are tired of talking about this,but I am not.BM.org acts like all is well.This reminds one of the band on the Titanic playing as the ship went down.

With most camps the ticket rate was 25% to 30% at best the award rate of tickets.So BM.org says that the 70% of the tickets went to the newbies AKA scalpers.BM.org says it was a video that sparked demand by over 300 %.In sales and marketing in which I make my living this is unheard of unless its being gamed.

REMEMBER at this date last year you still could buy a ticket for burning man.But BM.org has a fix to this.They do not want anyone to buy tickets from scalpers to teach them a lesson that there is no money in buying Burning Man tickets.

So its the community who are unticketed are asked not to buy tickets from scalpers.Once again its the community who are asked to sacrifice.The lottery was nothing more than a money grab.The plan was to get all ticket sales in one day.Last year it took 7 months for Burning man to sell out for the first time ever.Folks that was the plan from get go.In addition to that they managed to push almost half of all ticket sales into the the highest tiers 390,420.

Its so sad that BM.org had a community that would have marched to the gates of hell for them only to get spit into our faces

I don't think anybody said newbies had 70% of the tickets. The statistic that was shared was that 40% of the people who registered took the time to check the box that said they had never been to Burning Man before. Some people blew off the survey and either didn't answer or didn't answer truthfully (for whatever reason). Actuals could be lower, and also could be higher, but that percentage represents a significantly larger proportion of first timers in the mix since the 1990‘s. Anecdotally it's also worth pointing out that we've seen a massive surge in new members who are also first-timers, plus turnout at events (from the burnal equinox to participation faire to the recent picnic and even random events and parties...a lot of awesomely excited new people.

Overall, there was about a 1/3 success rate with the main sale. That's because there were registration requests for 120K tickets for 40K supply. Follow along and do the math with me, 40,000 divided by 120,000 comes out to... 1/3. And yes, that 120K is after the registration process had bounced out quite a few scalpers. I'm sure a few squeaked through, but based upon the number of tickets being scalped for other 'hot ticket' events, only a very small percentage of the ticket supply went to ticket scalpers. I'm not sure if your sales and marketing job has taight you any market analysis skills or if you've considered putting them to use over the last few months, but the analysis I've done seems to support what I said above.

As for the rest, it really has been discussed to death in numerous other threads. If you simply reject it, or can't be bothered to read or understand it, I can't be bothered to go over it again. The truth is out there, Sculley, even if you don't want to believe it.

Not sure of the methodology, but the 2011 census showed roughly 47% burgins. None of the other afterburns seem to have that question, but with the steep growth in total population, I would guess somewhere between 30-40% is the norm.

Which to me is encouraging. The event grows in scale and scope and remains vibrant and current enough to attract new blood. And yet the culture at the heart of it survives. It's like the growth of the US. Built by immigrants who adopt our culture while the old guard absorbs and accepts the best the new comers have to offer. Usually the food.

I have heard that there usually is between 40% and 50% virgin burners on average. So as far as I am concerned, this year will be no different.

It is up to all of us to set a good example, take care of the playa, have our shit together. Encourage active participation and involvement.

Just got a PM saying how a online auction site had scalpers - and that it was a HUGE issue. When I checked there were 10 tickets for sale between the US and CDN sites, that is about 0.0001% of all tickets. I stand by what I have said in the past on this issue.

Word on the street is there will never be another lottery.

Perhaps they'll just sell them like past years and you can bet they'll sell out in 10 minutes. I don't have a fast connection soooo...I might be orphaned!
If that were to happen, I'll wend my way to one of the bajillion alternate burns in the region and do some volunteering burn support off playa... but, but I do hope some sort of pre-burn developes in the Reno-ish area. Maybe there'll be an opportunity for a brief rendevous with local and long distance burners.
