Film Maker seeking Collaborator
Salutations fellow desert adventurers,
I am a San Francisco based film maker who has been to the burn for five years now. A few members of my camp, from San Diego and up here in the Bay, were fortunate enough to get tickets this year.
I currently work with a DP friend of mine at Vibrant Films, http://www.vibrantfilms.com where I write, produce, and direct web commercials, documentaries, short films, and the like. Unfortunately my DP is not going this year so I am looking for someone else to join with in order to film a (uhhh here goes) experimental, narrative, with a bit of improvisational happenstance short film. Sound strange? Damn right.
It's never been done, (mostly because the technology wasn't available) and it's going to require a ninja-like DP and by that I mean, they must be fearless, agile, and dedicated. I would prefer them also to have been to the burn before. The relationship between a DP (in this case, the camera operator) and I is going to need to be a close one. It would also be enormously helpful if the DP and I could do a few test shoots in San Francisco before the burn. I posses the required equipment and the technical know-how to produce the film so there is no issue there.
Male, Female, young, old, animal or vegetable I have no preference.
Forgive me for I am being intentionally nebulous here about the story but it's because I would rather explain the specifics 1 on 1 than in an open forum. If you'd like to know more please send me a message or email me at
Think: the visual approach in Gus Van Sant's Elephant mixed with real life.
Here is a link a reel of mine. [vimeo][/vimeo]
Cheers
M

Like the running scenes in old cartoons, where they pass the same trees and houses over and over?
If you want drama to stop following you everywhere, try letting go of the leash.

Yes! Or Roshamon when they just tell the woodcutter's story over and over...

Giving this a nudge to the 2012 Art & Performance board since I think that's a better fit. Don't forget that you would need to register your project and obtain permission from Burning Man in advance - they only approve a limited number of such projects per year? The deadline is in July, but it's suggested to register as early as possible (only so many projects are approved).

DP = Director of Photography, sometimes called cinematographer.

The multiple perspective story for Elephant is interesting but not what I was referring to. Keep in mind this just a reference to the style of cinematography.

Did you find anybody? Did you get your permit? Contact me, i'm a filmmaker from Winnipeg.
Last Days, Gerry & Elephant all fit within that style, i can help for a day. It'll be my first time there though.
peace,
Charles

Re: Film Maker seeking Collaborator
From the initial description, I have my worries that the Media team would not approve this project. This "ninja" style of shooting sounds a bit light on technicalities, like model/actor releases, which BM pretty much requires.
Shooting such a piece without Burning Man's okay is a fast-track to a lawsuit as soon as you try to display it. Heck, shooting the piece itself might run afoul of the Media team, Rangers or a mob of participants.

Re: Film Maker seeking Collaborator
You're right. My vision of having a quasi improv surveillance style shoot was a pipe dream.
Even if I had someone on release duty following us it would be quite ridiculous.
I am going to be doing some personal projects instead (with releases)
Any film types wanna chat about and/or share project work shoot me an email.
