Re: Playa Condition Prediction
Just back from a whirlwind road trip from WA state thru Oakland and Reno, with a stop at Gearlach for breakfast at Bruno's on the return trip. Drove out to 3 mile entrance and took a short walk on the playa. No standing water visible in that area. However, surface was a bit dark/damp, and down a couple of inches it was damp enough a ball could be formed out of it.

I totally agree, though I worry there will be a ton of *really* unprepared peeps out there this year. While I'd like to see the ticket sales be reasonable next year, with some glittery equines removed from the mix, I'd not like to see a lot of people actually getting hurt due to being unprepared.jcliff wrote:My secret hope is that it will be apocolyptic conditions....I mean the four horseman riding down the esplanade epic. I'd like to see next year's viral video titled "Hold On to Your Mother Fucking Hat" instead of the cheery "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" Mother Nature may be our best hope for normalizing ticket sales next year.

EVERYTHING WILL BE BIEGE THIS YEAR
after the first two days most people are going to wish They were still in Reno, watching the History Channel at the Grand Sierra and Room Servicing Monte Cristos and Beer.
THE WHEAT WILL BE SEPARATED FROM THE CHAFF, AND THOSE THAT LAP LIKE DOGS SHALL BURN ON

was at Symbiosis on the east side Pyramid Lake last week and we had a couple of windy as shit days with a pretty good dust up. Was good practice for my yurt...
I have a feeling it's going to stay hot, dry, windy and dusty through out the summer.

Re: Playa Condition Prediction
bwahahaha Bob! There were times while there that I wondered the same thing. When I didn't get tix in the main lottery I started seeing the ads for Symbiosis. I knew that if I didn't get to bm I would at least need 1 desert experience this year and wasn't sure I could make TTITD in July. My 22 year old daughter talked me into going and with it being really close to home (we live in Fallon, NV), why not?
Well it was very different from bm, but I knew it would be. The most disturbing thing to me while there was all the moop everywhere and the piles of garbage left at the porta potties. goddamn hippies! I also didn't like the vendor aspect of it, just gave it a different vibe. It also seemed pretty unorganized and the walk in camping was difficult to say the least.
All in all we had a good time though. We stayed until tuesday morning but 98% of the attendees had left by monday evening so we did get to enjoy the peaceful solitude of the area that evening.

Re: Playa Condition Prediction
I do try to avoid judgments on people's tastes, but the previews for that *thing* just reeked of patchouli-soaked dream catchers.
Main concern when I first heard of it was trash blowing into the sagebrush. Much easier to control on the playa, but I've seen things get absolutely out of control at the org's ranch 20+ miles north of Gerlach, in similar terrain -- one winter caretaker in the 90s was in the habit of just tossing all his garbage out the trailer door, and the next spring we found all his plastic bags, pork & bean & Busch cans and girlie magazines all blown into the sagebrush downwind, along with tarps and a few trailers.

Re: Playa Condition Prediction
Oh hell yeah it did reek of patchouli and weed and dreadlocks
Most everybody was wearing kind of the same thing and they had vendors there so if you wanted you could look like everybody else too.
It was a mix of the "peaceful align with the moon, I'm gonna get my yoga on" people and the "I'm gonna take all the drugs I can find and rage all night raver" people.
someone put up a little cardboard sign out by parking "This is not Burning Man" I just thought to myself "you got that right" Going to Symbiosis really made me appreciate how organized and thought out bm is though.
My daughter and I mooped alot, especially on Monday. As we drove out tuesday morning I was really hoping that the Sym clean up crew will do a good job because the setting is gorgeous. How shameful if they don't...

I just got back from Rendezvous (Memorial Day). This video was from our campsite (4:00/G) last year.

Re: Playa Condition Prediction
Just got back from a work weekend at Burning Man Ranch....and it was windy as hell. The good news is that there was no major dust kicked up off the playa. Of course, that could change by August.
Re: Playa Condition Prediction
There is hardly any dust until the gates open. Dust storms are mostly dictated by the wind.jcliff wrote:Just got back from a work weekend at Burning Man Ranch....and it was windy as hell. The good news is that there was no major dust kicked up off the playa. Of course, that could change by August.

yeah, as much as anything, the dust comes from all the driving and walking, etc, crushing the delicate crust exposing the powder to the wind.
sometimes, from outside the city, it's clear and windy, but the city looks like a "dust bubble".

Ya, winds were ~35 on Sat and near calm on Sun. On both days, we could see "dust storms" behind moving cars that were 10 miles away. Most of the cross playa driving I did left 3-4" deep tire tracks.ygmir wrote:.... as much as anything, the dust comes from all the driving and walking, etc, crushing the delicate crust exposing the powder to the wind.

no seriously, if you have never been to Black rock desert, you had better begin to respect it by preparing properly.
temperature swings of 50 degrees within 12 hours are NOT UNUSUAL.
winds of over 70 mph and dust storms that last HOURS are not unusual.
Last Years NEAR PERFECT WEATHER was REALLY FUCKING UNUSUAL.
so, you better bring more than just wine and cheese to this picnic.
