NO FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
Ok, so I was reading the first timers guide, and I came upon the part that says " absolutely no feathers on the playa"...And that the greeter will be looking for them when they search vehicals upon entry. I understand the reasoning behind this rule, and I'm not questioning the rule itself. I was just wondering why I see so many people wearing feathers in alot of the video's and pictures on BM facebook, youtube, flickr...ect. Has this rule changed??? Or are there really that many people out there that just don't give a F@#%???

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
I saw more feathers than ever before. I didn't get my survival guide until I got home, so I am figuring perhaps a few folks literally did not get the memo. Others? Practicing radical self-entitlement, no doubt. "My feathers won't MOOP, they're special, magical super feathers!"

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
Not only feathers, but mopeds (the seated kind, with no disabled plaque, flag or sticker) and dogs, real live dogs, they didn't appear to be the DPW pets either, sure they could've been, but my money says the dogs were smuggled in.
What other people think about you is none of your business.
Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
There's plenty of not-giving-a-@#$%, but a lot of ignorance too.
A friend of mine did a repair on a woman's bike. She innocently gifted him an elaborate peacock feather hair clip w/ brooch in return, thinking this was a suitable gift he might pass on to a female friend. (Her heart was in the right place; it was nice.) He in turn gifted it to me, knowing I would do exactly what I did: press it to my abdomen and walk briskly to my tent and place it in plastic to wear at home.
People miss the memo bigtime, just like they misinterpret "Light yourself up at night" to mean "Be able to see".

Burning Man isn't about the stuff you see when you get there ....it's about the people that brought that stuff there
Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
I have never received a survival guide ( or jawbreaker for that matter ) in the mail because I am eligible for low income tickets, perhaps the guides only go out to full price ticket holders. I get my info on the website and just copy the PDF document at home. Like any other social group , some people just never get the word, ( or choose to ignore the rules. )

I questioned a young lady who was letting a guy try hers out by the portos ... "Oh, my friend has a special sticker for it from the DMV". Yeah, I don't see a sticker, bitch, and why are YOU riding his staff/handicapped vehicle? Yeah, that's legit.Bounce530 wrote:Not only feathers, but mopeds (the seated kind, with no disabled plaque, flag or sticker) and dogs, real live dogs, they didn't appear to be the DPW pets either, sure they could've been, but my money says the dogs were smuggled in.

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
The greeters were too busy giving hugs and dropping acid to search for magical feathers. Hack they might of handed out special feathers! Thank goodness it wasn't feather boa's, or we might of ran out of room for the floor show.KrazyRussian wrote:Ok, so I was reading the first timers guide, and I came upon the part that says " absolutely no feathers on the playa"...And that the greeter will be looking for them when they search vehicals upon entry.
I know, right. What the heck was the DMV thinking this year? My theory on all of this is to just fill out a feedback email. I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...

GATE searches vehicles, Greeters give hugs and guidebooks. Remember, you stopped twice on the way in? They are separate departments.C187 wrote:

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
Sorry for the thread-necromancy, but I thought this might be the best place to post this idea: Buy some feather-print fabric -- options abound online, one example below -- and sew a long, narrow scarf out of it: Playa-friendly, moop-free feather boa! I'm so doing this for myself if I get my golden ticket. If I'm feeling really ambitious, I might even make a cylindrical one and stuff it, loosely and lumpily, for boa-like shape and night-time warmth.

You mean a green Brazilian? I believe that's a subspecies of shirtcockatoo.theCryptofishist wrote:Yeah, there was a green amazonian(?) I saw more than once...

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
umm.
My first Playa bike ride; I came accross a dead bird, it was covered in feathers.
If you need to flip out about somthing flip out about glowsticks or red solo cups.
agreed the feather boas are a moopie Idea. but a hat that has the feather glued and stapled to the band is not a problem. nor is the person wearing it. and no matter how mutch you want to quote the New timers guide to people use your head before you you use your mouth or hands.
In my Medicine Bundle along with my Chanunpa (ceremonial pipe) I have a couple of feathers. They have and will be with me on the playa.

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
the more i've learned about moop in the last few weeks' reading, the more i am choosing NOT to bring certain things to the playa that i had initially wanted to:
-beaded saris, clothes with buttons glued on rather than individually stitched on, loosely secure rhinestones, loose glitter make up etc. (no feathers anyway 'cause i'm vegan)
my new moop policy is: when in doubt, leave it hOME
(I've even started sewing neat hems on to garments that previously had a raw edge...i don't even want to chance STRINGS and THREADS mooping off of me.
i am down in the sub-atomic level now
this is one noob who won't be guilty of moop-sins)

Plus, the added inspection will help you find loose seams and other things that may blow apart in a howling dust storm.

Re: FEATHERS ON THE PLAYA
My daughters were just about heart broken to not be able to bring feathers.....silly girls:-) So my oldest came up with an alternative and she is using them in place of feathers. They are glued, stitched and clamped into place, the jewels are stitched and glued and the ribbons are sewed, knotted and glued. You can pound this baby on the table 25 times and nothing falls off:-) Not sure why the head dress but it is just one of many costumes in the massive trunk that is coming with us.

Yes, craft foam. They can be ripped but you have to really be serious about it to make them tear.

One can also make the feathers out of leather. Might be a bit heavier, but can be painted.

inthecolumbiagorge's daughter made some nice ones from craft foam. Not up to that standard, but not all of us have that skillset. It's good to have options.
