So today's WTF moment came when Simion pointed out this camps kickstarter.

from their page:

To the best of our knowledge, we are the only camp that still has permission to bring live plant product onto the playa.

um. so what makes em so special?

no dogs means no dogs, no feathers means no feathers, why does no plants mean "That's ok! we got special permission"

Actually, it might be. I recall reading some years back about the requirements for bringing live plants to the event. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find that info on the BM site any longer, but it has been allowed in the past.

I believe that the Oil Derrick project actually got a permission to bring a tree to the playa, but somehow gate never got word and consequently the final part of that project never happened. (though I'm not as sure of the details about that as I am about what I remember reading about plants.)

Oh, and dogs are permitted. If you are with DWP. I've seen them out there almost every burn.

Shady Asylum's plans are currently in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. Back in the day, my understanding is that they were one of the few camps that was able to pull it off (I could be wrong, but I believe they tarped underneath, had solid shade overhead, and took great care of what they brought out). When the ban on plants was first put into place several years ago, they were granted an exception.

For what it's worth, I don't believe they were trying to be sneaky - there appears to have been a miscommunication in their planning for this year. Without getting into details, nothing has yet been approved by Burning Man.

they are not on the placed camps list.
but were they issued tickets to sell to their crew?
cause if what they were bringing as an interactive element of their camp was the sod. but that's a no go?
they need to get vocal and clear about what they plan who said yes and where they can be found.
asking for community resources and donations makes them open to scrutiny and criticism. meeting the guidlines and deadlines for theme camps is a city wide requirement.

So who's their sponsor Krug?

They're looking for the burning public to be their sponsor (what with the 'pay for my camp' fundraiser).

Not being on the public list has nothing to do with whether the camp was approved or not, that list is gathered from those camps who filled out registrations and said they wanted o have their information listed publicly on the site (many camps do not, for whatever reason). When placement makes their announcements regarding who got placed (and who didn't), that list will be updated to reflect any changes.

Shady Asylum goes to extraordinary lengths to keep their sod from drying up and MOOPing the play.
It is completely contained within their enclosure, and has never been a problem. If it becomes a problem,
the exception will be withdrawn.

They have an exemplary record of doing this right. One year they consulted to another camp who had the same idea,
and when Shady's logistics was explained, the other camp decided they couldn't pull it off. But Shady does.
They are the exception that proves the rule.

On a related issue, how does Glitter Camp get past the Gate each year with literally buckets of loose glitter.

I know it sucks when you've been doing something for years and years and sudden you are told that it really isn't acceptable. Yet somehow Glitter Camp seems immune to any explanation or demonstration that the people they are decorating are flaking off glitter all across the playa.
