The long answer is this can of worms.
The short answer is that you are taking your life into your hands, and if anyone happens to kill or maim you, you've really fcuked up their life.

Hmmm
I met folks in SF who had biked before, and I've heard of groups. Thanks for the concern, that's why I'm on this site seeing if others are up to/doing this. :)

It's your first year.
Do you really hate us so much, that your willing to piss off thousands of people? Or do you think so little of your life that you are willing to take the chance of throwing it away just to ride on a narrow, really busy, strech of road with thousands of freaks from all over the country. Who have already driven gAWD knows how many hundreds or thousands of miles????
Don't be a selfish prick.
Have already seen two accidents this year.
It gets really fucking old.

sounds like a great idea!! But is someone taking in all your water or hope you are trailering it in? Yeah it's a two lane road with most of the traffic going in one direction. Should not be too dangerous, but the real danger start once you get into BM. Or did you not read the back of the ticket?

Anyone else who commented get pms from the op talking about your "negativity"?
Was I particularly negative?
Maybe I caught her in another thread and simply don't remember because she didn't stand out in any way. Now she seems just a little too fragile, but whatever.

or she's another one of those virgins who don't seem to get that she's going to one of the harshest environments in the US for a week, and maybe people who've been already might know something she doesn't. And that maybe, just maybe, sometimes she does need to have it pointed out that just because something can or has been done doesn't mean it should be done.theCryptofishist wrote:Maybe I caught her in another thread and simply don't remember because she didn't stand out in any way.

Aha! I found it!
And I wasn't even talking to her, just to the op of that thread.
"Fragile" might be putting it mildly.

Excuse me, is this a Shallow Management Seminar or is this a camping trip in the desert?

a good riff, I thought. Let's face it, for many forum readers, in order to avoid offending them, the winking smilie is a necessary attachment to a wry, or exaggerated comment. If Mark Twain were writing today he'd have to be up to speed on his smilies.theCryptofishist wrote:Aha! Re: Bike to the Burn
Ive been to burning man and the road aint as dangerous as yall make it out to be. I doubt uve ridden a bike through a major city. I for one will be riding my bike from seattle, so to die on the road into the burn would be a priveledge rather than anywhere else along that journey. I think every biker knows the risks.. We do it for the love. And we do it well

Re: Bike to the Burn
We had a camp member mountain bike all the way from New York in 2010. Had panniers and everything for his gear, and a little trailer. It was a long leisurely trip that took him a couple months.
Unfortunately, Thursday or Friday of that week someone cut the lock on his bike and stole it. The camp took a collection for a plane ticket to get him home.
It made the camp realize that the citizens of BRC should confront anyone they see traveling the playa with bolt cutters. Contact Rangers immediately.

Re: Bike to the Burn
It can be done by those with training and experience (not just a desert, but a high altitude desert), but that still doesn't make it a particularly good idea. Your mileage may vary, you assume all risk of death and whatnot.

Really. If I see anyone with bolt-cutters I will contact a Ranger. If you have a legit reason then there's no problem.
