I think what happened was that, mostly, many registered multiple times for the lottery and, consequently, many obtained more tickets than they really needed. We are seeing a parallel distribution network where tickets are distributed by folks holding more than their immediate needs. I am not saying they are scalping or profiteering. Just that these tickets are being distributed "off the BMORG radar."

Whatever the number of tickets held by scalpers, we will really see the real numbers only once physical tickets are all out in the default world. It is not really obvious that scalpers know the nature of BM. Most tickets to concert/sport events are sold in the last few days before the events. Scalpers might not be aware of the preparations required for BM and that tickets will rapidly decrease in value as the event approaches... just a thought.

This is something I have thought about as well.
I think it is a distinct possibility.
Someone mentioned scalpers trying to sell tickets near the gate.
Anyone know if they attracted any buyers at all?

I also remain unconvinced that ads are representative of actual tickets held.
I've said this before, but ebay is too private to measure easily.
When I have contacted local scalpers, it becomes clear that the smart ones aren't psoting many ads, three at most.
They may hold hundreds or thousands of tickets, but they are smart enough to preserve the image of scarcity.
When I ask if they can find more than they posted, they have plenty.
Their ads list one or two, and four tickets.
They just never run out.

If the problem is overpurchasing, that seems to be almost as destructive to an event like this.

Got two $390 tix via STEP today (and because I know you wanna know, my timestamps were 12:17:02 (sent), and 12:17:56 (received)). I already got a ticket through Gate for myself, so I'll be selling one of these back into STEP just as soon as I can.

@moonwatcher - entirely possible, though in following a number of other events and festivals the number of tickets available through after-market sources generally only increases 15-30%. I expect that the percentage increase for Burning Man will be higher than that (because the number available before was so low), but the overall numbers should still be relatively low. Either way, we'll see soon enough.

Sorry for any confusion.
I was comparing the experience with local scalpers of concerts.
It seems to be an effective strategy, and I have seen it used on ebay.
We have no local aftermarket of burning man tickets at all.

Tickets for the burn would have to be purchased in the main sales or bought aftermarket.
Scalpers are said to have been caught doing that in nevada, pretending to be burners when buying from people.

So how do you know what your time code is? I got the confirmation email at 2:20 that I got registered for STEP, and then got a second confirmation email at 2:23 which worried me why I got two and if they would remove me thinking I was trying to scam the system.

look for the time stamp that says "sent from burning man" you may have to look under the tools or more options button on your email.
