nudity on the playa is great. I'm a nudist and the disconnection from the textile world is wonderful.

If a person walks naked through the desert and there's no one there to be offended, is it still illegal?
My understanding is that laws pertaining to obscenity exist and are normally enforced in Nevada. The reason some things are different in BRC is a nebulous concept called "community standards". Nudity is a form of Radical Self Expression, and therefore in line with the community standards of Burning Man. Because of this LEO's don't attempt to write tickets or prosecute people who walk around in states of undress in BRC that would normally get them arrested in other places.

My opinion is that the other 50 weeks of the year you don't have the city there so you lose the "community standards" defense. YMMV, IANAL, etc.

Short answer, I'd guess not, but how many people do you expect to run into out there to arrest you for it?

BLM rangers have visited every time I've camped out there, since the mid-90s. Judge Phil, the local Washoe County justice of the peace, used to stop by too {drink}. Never heard of them making an issue of it.

Naked in the town of Gerlach is another thing altogether. Especially if you're naked and loud. Even more especially if you're a loud, naked, petulant Frenchman waltzing into Bruno's gas station demanding that they refill a truckload of DPW propane tanks ASAP, and light up a huge joint right next to the guy as he's hooking up to the first tank. Yeah, we were hard up for volunteers that year.

I thought that nebulous concept behind allowing nudity at Burning Man is that it's a private event.
