Aloha Burners!

Postby Ruiz808 » Sun Jul 15, 2012 5:59 pm

hello all..my name is Roy representing the 808 state. This will be my 3rd and most likely final burn.
i'm starting a rumour that the burningman will shift and change this year so this will be my last hurrah
on the playa. Anyways, i'm camping with samba on stilts because i've always wanted to be part of
a samba bateria and i love dancing to live music..and what better music than booty shakin' samba.

i hope to see you all there when the beat drops.. 8)

Wow, last time I looked, we only had 50 states.
I'm always on the wrong side of history, anyway.

808 State got their name from the Roland TR 808 Drum Machine and the state-of-mind that they shared. The annex "State" was frequently used in titles of Massey's previous group Biting Tongues (Evening State , The Lock Up State, The Wave State). It's true that the group was originally intended to be State 808 and was settled by a number of printing errors. The US state of Hawaii often uses the nickname "The 808 State" after its dialing code "808" but it is not confirmed weather this was ever used before 1988, and therefore derivative of the Manchester band.

Nice, carlos!

(edited to add: Now I have "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" galloping around in my head, however.)

Oooh, samba! Nice!

I adore Big Island. First time I visited was so long ago the cabins in Volcanoes Park were still run by the Army. I hiked Kilauea cauldera, which you can't do now, and still have my certificate from Mme. Pele. I know, cheesy, but it means a lot to me.

I've been back a few times, with MyLarry, and we only do the tourist thing minimally. The Expedia hostess hates our guts.

Aloha, Roy! We are planning to visit the Big Island next May for our 10th anniversary. Never been to the 808 before - would love any tips! We will be renting a VW Bus and camping around the island over 2 weeks. This may be our last burn for a while too. Perhaps we could connect for some burner-type fun (beach bonfire, fire dancing?). We don't really have any connections there but I'm sure we'll meet some great folks along the way. I've never been anywhere tropical - really looking forward to it!

My tourist tips: The beaches on Kona side will not be what you expect, they can be rocky. Hike in to Green Sand Beach. Beautiful. Drive to South Point and drink beer with your legs over the the cliffs. Kava-kava Bar in Kona and the Okolemaluna Tiki Lounge. There's a terrific Native Tree Preserve on the saddle road, (over the top of the island) I thought it was nifty and tucked away. Also, sunset on top of Muana Kea.

And look up all the farmer's markets.

Be careful on the saddle road, take your time and go easy. We saw a pickup overcorrect and roll, right at us. Guy was unhurt, but it is a scary reminder not to be in a hurry. It's Hawaii, never a reason to be in a hurry.
