Evaporation wheel
Evaporation wheel
Last year we had a bunch of grey water leftover, which was a pain and had to be carted out. We've been thinking about various ways to assist in evaporation from low-tech (just making it bigger, laying towels over the edge, etc) to higher tech, but most of the higher tech ideas involve using pumps, which can clog too easily out there in our experience from our outdoor camp shower. So someone (not I) came up with the idea of a solar-powered water wheel, but instead of buckets, it's just flaps of burlap that soak up the water as they pass through the bottom, and then wave that moisture through the air as they pass up and around.
Nothing to clog, low solar power requirements, very little to break. Not sure if we'll get to it before playa time, but anyone tried this or have any comments on why it'd work well or not?

Re: Evaporation wheel
If the burlap is hanging, mighten it get tangled in the wheel?

Re: Evaporation wheel
My experience with burlap (not on a project like that, but in general) is that it gets MOOPy fast. Perhaps cotton or terrycloth wold work for you?

Re: Evaporation wheel
The instructables evapotron Gray-B-Gon is well proven. A wind+solar boost hybrid would be a great project!

As in the burlap starts unraveling in wind or something?trilobyte wrote:My experience with burlap (not on a project like that, but in general) is that it gets MOOPy fast. Perhaps cotton or terrycloth wold work for you?

It sheds a lot of particles.

Re: Evaporation wheel
While you're at it just make it wind powered, should be easy enough.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Bob's pay to crank is genius.
