A solution to the cameras problem.

Post by HughMungus » Thu Sep 09, 2004 10:51 am

Pretty simple, really: If you don't know the people you're taking a picture of, you shouldn't be taking a picture. No "asking permission" because that obviously does not work. Ban photography of all types unless you are taking pictures of someone you already know. There would still be plenty of photos online and in people's hands to show others what Burning Man looks like and we'd get rid of a lot of the problems with unauthorized photography. Burning Man is about immediate experiences and interaction, not experiencing an image you took days, weeks, or months ago.
It's what you make it.

Actually, there should just be one rule ... DONT ACT LIKE A FUCKTARD. Sometimes I wish there were concentration camps for assholes (as long as *I* get to pick). Maybe I should publish a "How Not To Be A Fucktard" manual that includes common sense like ...

Thou shalt not make graven images without permission.
Thou shalt not ride unlit bikes at night.
Thou shalt not walk unlit on the playa at night.
Thou shalt honor Geekster.

You know ... stuff like that.

Geekstar: I'm entertained! You may stay.

Added to the fucktard list:

Thou shalt not ride thy bike when thou art too drunk to walk.
Thou shalt keep thy hands to theyself at Critical Tits unless thou art a participant.
Thou shalt never do a drug on the playa thou hast not done at home.
Drink not thy neighbors greywater (OK, you can... but don't expect sympathy!)
Thou shalt not try to rush the Temple to knock it over

how the hell would you try to enforce that? what happens if someone is in the background of the picture? what if i want to take a picture of art and there are people in it?

asking permission does work. when you actually ask. its the people who don't ask permission that seem to be the problem for you, in which case why would they follow this rule either?

I think we were talking about a picture of a single individual. I agree, you cant enforce pics of a crowd or "extras" in the background.

Hey Dallas,

That Daily Foo has some INTERESTING topics! Looking forward to reading more.

Regarding cameras, I have to say that I LIKE having my picture taken when I am in my playafied prime--it, too, is an experience, it's also an honor, it's not a bad thing. Attitude is everything.

What waters down the BM experience, as in real life, is when the people who are disgruntled get to make the rules. Fortunatly, this doesn't happen all the time. But it seems to me that with every rule, there is a price to pay and a loss. Nothing can make everything right and everyone happy. There will always be problems. Rules are attempts to solve problems, I know. But it's like: "My kid fell off the monkey bars, let's ban monkey bars." or "I don't like alcohol, let's have prohibition." or "I don't agree with your religion/culture, so I'm gonna blow you up." Sorry to take it so big...but why can't people not like something and still live with it?

Lmao

Post by dj big E » Tue Sep 28, 2004 4:26 pm

It's funny in the earlier videos ie 95-96 you know when it was small and everything is "cool" lmao. Everyone has a camera or a video cam it looks like. In the infamous mud orgy of 95 or 96 not quite sure theres about 20 or so mud people maybe more. And about 100 or so voyuers all with cameras and videos. So basically i just would like to point out that cameras and video recorders have been theyre the whole time. It's not a new phenomenon.

When my camp did the shower / mud pit thing in '96, I was hosing down a lot of the cameras.

God forbid we should create our own rules.

Next thing you know, we'll be creating our own art.

mud orgy in question

Post by dj big E » Tue Sep 28, 2004 8:01 pm

In the video i have " This is burning man" I believe the mud orgy is from water from the brief rainstorm . I could be wrong but no one is accosting the voyeurs or the photogs. All i am trying to say is the voyuers and the photogs been theyre since the beginning. Anyways this video also shows the drive by shooting range fuck that looked like fun.

Burning Man and Cameras: It's all fun and games until someone decides the fun is over - then it's a 'problem'. Amongst that many people, if you don't want someone taking a picture of whatever it is you are doing, don't do it where someone can/will take a picture.

Because then you can get someone else involed and/or they will understand when you are throwing water balloons at them every time you see them.

It just seems like cameras being around is discouraging people from doing what they want.

I think my favorite line this year was someone sitting in their camp with a megaphone saying, "If you take my fucking picture I will break your fucking camera."

And what if you want an audience but not a record? It's as if someone were to say to you, "Say whatever you want but it will all be recorded."

I guess I find that hard to believe...but I'm open to it:

Let's hear from people who didn't do what they wanted because of cameras...and, pleeeeease, tell us exactly what you would have done!

Oh, and one more thing...I want to say a big THANK YOU to all the wonderful and generous people on the playa who not only graciously accepted my request to take their photos, but did their "thing" with even more gusto as I clicked the shutter. I cherish the wonderful photos, the good vibes and connection we shared in that moment.

We'll never tell you - nyah nyah

OK only if everyone promises to stop whining about cameras. Just sign in and punch the quote icon next to the quote in question. Then proceed to delete everything you don't want until you can bastardize whatever it is they're saying until it says exactly what you want.

I'm tending to the opposite side of the camera debate. Looking over my pictures I couldn't help but notice a lot of people clearly mooning or posing well for the camera clearly enjoying showing what they got, including some women with a fair bit showing. I only asked two people to take their pictures. I'll try to post one of the 'flower guy" if I can figure how to post a photo. He looks awesome.

The solution is a cell phone that squirts napalm. Someone takes your pic without asking, you just take theirs! Or just toss him a Yahoo! t-shirt so the rest of us are tipped off next time. :)

Okay, I admit it....I have severe documentarianism. Is there a 12-step program for this?!

Yeah, here's a suggestion. No, not that one. Puleeze! Get your mind out of the gutter!

You can also copy and paste text into the open "post a reply" window (the one that you have open when you're composing your reply/response). "Select" the text you want to appear in quotes, and then click on the "Quote" button at the top of the page. Now, here's the fun part.

Notice at the beginning of the text you want quoted, there are two square brackets with the word "quote" in the middle, like this (except I'm using curvy, rather than square, brackets): {quote}. Now, notice how, above the text of yours that I quoted above, it says "mars wrote:" The eplaya bulletion board program does this automatically when I hit the "quote" button at the upper right of your post. However, you can do this your self when copying and pasting, AND you can change the name of the person being quoted.

For example, if I wanted to change the name of the person quoted from "mars" to "shit for brains" (not a comment on you personally, I'm just using this as an example for what you can do if you want to fuck with somebody), here's how to do it. Change this at the beginning of the quote (again using curvy brackets for illustration): {quote="mars"} to {quote="shit for brains"} to get this:
shit for brains wrote:If this worked--thanks! If not...any other suggestions?
Also, use the "preview" button at the bottom of the "post a reply" window to make sure your post looks the way you want it to, before you finalize and actually post it to the bulletion board. Party on, Garth!
...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...

taking photos

Post by vic » Sun Oct 10, 2004 3:39 pm

I am a compulsive photographer and I greatly enjoy taking photos at Burning Man. I always ask before pulling out my camera, and I don't make photos of people without permission. If they don't acknowledge my request, I don't shoot.
Having said that, it would be OK with me to ban photography for a year to see how it woud effect the event. I expect that the likelyhood of being photographed is inhibiting to many, it certainly was for some members of our camp.

I am wondering how anyone can prohibit or regulate cameras, still or video, or the act of taking pictures or videos on public land at a public event?
