Platform for DJ Booth - suggestions please
I'm building a variation of the H13 Hexayurt for a DJ booth and we would like for it to sit on a raised platform. The easiest solution I've come up with is to create a platform out of pallets. The H13 is close to 16x18' at the floor, so this would require using quite a few pallets. We want it to be 3 or 4 pallets tall. This of course means shipping an assload of pallets so I'm searching for an alternative for a raised platform. Suggestions?

Build a deck.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Yeah that sounds like a better idea. 2x4 framing with plywood for the floor. That would take up less shipping space. It would be a lot more work involved though. Would need plenty of helping hands!

Build and assemble it at home then take it apart- ship- reassemble. You probably need to frame it with 2x6s or greater depending on how much weight you want it to bear, 3/4" plywood minimum and use screws not nails

Re: Platform for DJ Booth - suggestions please
Moving this over to the preparation/q&a board (Preparation is a section best used for how to build stuff, the 2012 event boards are for posting and announcing completed projects).
What they said, pallets tend to shed moop like crazy, too. Yeah, to no one's surprise, building things requires work - welcome to Burning Man!
It might be a little late in the season but bigger shit has been built in less time, you and your campmates can totally make it happen if you're determined.

Yeah the more I thought about it pallets seem like not the best option. They are great for the backyard though! I think a deck is a better idea and we've plenty of campmates to help with it. 2x6's are better. Time is running out. I'm glad to hear that bigger things were built in less time... This HAS to happen! Our camp leader told me of plan B if I can't build this and plan B sounds aweful. We are on the Esplanade and this has to be marvelous. Don't even ask what plan B was. Thank you for you help!

Bring tools. Get materials, cut to length, drill bolt holes at the Reno home supply store. Donate good materials on playa after.

Plan B is to use the back of a truck covered in plastic. We'll be at 4:30. All of our DJ's are from a small island in Indonesia and are no taller than 2', so that shouldn't be a problem. They make good chocolate too...

I am a carpenter, and I do it for a living. I'm just trying to cut costs wherever I can since I'm already in it way over my budget. Pallets are free!

If you *were* a carpenter, you would have provided the Dear Readers of the eplaya with a few more details, eg how much taller you want to be than God --- God being the Space Cowboys.

You are so right. I'm must not be a carpenter and I'm taking our campmates to the back of the line. Thank you so much for your perfect solution Bob!Bob wrote:If you *were* a carpenter, you would have provided the Dear Readers of the eplaya with a few more details, eg how much taller you want to be than God --- God being the Space Cowboys.
Anyway, building a deck seems like the best option. Luckily quite a few people have came forward to help out!
Good advice!motskyroonmatick wrote:Just remember that heavy slab of whatever to put the turntables on so they don't reverb the music to hell.

Re: Platform for DJ Booth - suggestions please
HOW TALL? You typed "3 or 4 pallets tall". On the flat, or on edge?

Re: Platform for DJ Booth - suggestions please
HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no, but, I did just save a lot of money by switching to Geico.
A pallet lying flat on the ground is about 5", so 4 stacked would be about 20". I would love to have it taller but that's too many pallets to worry about. With a deck on the other hand, I could go taller. I think realistically for this application 2' would be about right. Yes I am a carpenter, but I'm never built an H13 hexayurt nor a deck to go with it.

The use of simpson strong ties will make assembly and disassembly easier. Plus stronger. And at the end of the event i believe you can donate the lumber, or burn it.
